Maldives government has sought public opinion on tourism laws and regulations in a bid to review the legal framework concerning tourism.

In a statement, tourism ministry said relevant laws and regulations have been published on the ministry’s website. Suggestions can be sent in through email to info@tourism.gov.mv for a period of seven days from January 20, it added.

“Necessary regulations are being amended with reference to comments and suggestions made during the Guesthouse Symposium held on December 29, 2018,” the statement read.

Held as part of the new government’s first 100-day pledges, the Maldives Guesthouse Symposium 2018 took place at the main convention centre of Dharubaaruge in capital Male. The one-day forum was attended by tourism minister Ali Waheed and top officials of relevant authorities along with representatives from 340 guesthouses located across the Maldives.

The main objective of the symposium is to create a platform for guesthouse operators and relevant government authorities to come together and discuss issues and constraints, providing strategic directions for sustainable development of guesthouse sector, which support environmentally sensitive business operations, whilst protecting the cultural and natural heritage of the island in providing maximum economic and social benefits to the local people.

The symposium recognises the need for sustainable development of the rapidly growing guesthouse sector of the Maldives, as well as the government’s commitment to identify and address issues and challenges faced by guesthouse operators and island communities.

Tourism minister Ali Waheed had earlier told journalists that his ministry was in the process of formulating a new strategic masterplan for tourism. Comments and suggestions made by industry stakeholders would be incorporated in the masterplan, he had said.

Meanwhile, the government has pledged to ramp up tourism promotion.

Reflecting the new government’s pledge, the state budget for 2019 includes MVR 104,200,000 (USD 6.7 million) for tourism promotion, up from MVR 34,733,333 (USD 2.2 million) this year and the previous year.

Leading Indian-Ocean resort brand, Atmosphere Hotels & Resorts, has announced plans to celebrate World Vegetarian Day on October 1 at two of its Maldivian resorts – Atmopshere Kanifushi and OBLU Select at Sangeli.

Both resorts offer dedicated vegetarian-only restaurants – JUST VEG and SIMPLY VEG – that delight the palate without the need for meat or fish.

Atmosphere Kanifushi was one step ahead of the curve, opening the Maldives’ first purely vegetarian restaurant, JUST VEG, in 2013. Following increased customer demand, OBLU Select at Sangeli, which opened in July 2018, launched SIMPLY VEG, offering plant-based fine dining based on seasonal, local ingredients.

Each restaurant redefines contemporary non-meat cuisine by experimenting with original and surprising flavour combinations. Serving mouth-watering Mediterranean, Arabic and Indian combinations and offering a special menu specifically for Jain cuisine, guests leave with a new sense of appreciation for vegetarian dining.

Senthil Kumar, Chef de Partie at JUST VEG, recently won a Gold Award at the Food & Hospitality Asia Maldives (FHAM) Culinary Challenge for a dish that he created. Over 500 chefs from Maldivian resorts and hotels take part in the competition at the annual event, and only the very best win Gold Awards.

Chef Kumar says that guests often leave the restaurant pleasantly surprised about how much they enjoyed their meals, despite the absence of meat. He says: “I enjoy creating innovative and rustic meals that feature fresh, quality ingredients. I love to push the boundaries and create dishes that people might not expect to enjoy, but they are surprised at how much they love it. More guests are seeking vegetarian and vegan options, and we are delighted to be able to provide delicious options for them, without skimping on quality or flavour.”

The resort will be welcoming Italian Michelin-starred vegetarian cuisine chef, Fabrizio Marino, to JUST VEG at Atmosphere Kanifushi in January 2020. Chef Marino, his assistant chef and manager will all visit JUST VEG and work with the culinary team to share their superior vegetarian cuisine knowledge and service skills over the course of a week.

Resort guests will have the opportunity to dine at JUST VEG which will feature specially-designed menus by Chef Marino and his team.

Atmosphere’s first property, Atmosphere Kanifushi, opened its doors in December 2013. The group opened its second property, OBLU by Atmosphere at Helengeli, in November 2015; followed by their flagship ‘Lifestyle Luxury’ sub-brand, OZEN by Atmosphere, in July 2016; and then OBLU Select at Sangeli, which opened in July 2018.

The newest addition to the portfolio, VARU by Atmosphere, offering a naturally Maldivian experience, is due to open in October 2019.

Atmosphere Hotels & Resorts offers guest-centric resort experiences through unique Resort Plans, offering guests a range of all-encompassing experiences, with varieties of dining options as well as a number of complimentary amenities and activities that ensure a relaxed, hassle-free holiday experience at each resort, all while staying true to the brand’s core philosophy: ‘The Joy of Giving’.

Hong Kong Airlines has announced plans to add a fourth weekly flight to the Maldives.

The airline, which operated a charter service between Hong Kong and Male in 2011, began scheduled flight operations to the Maldives on January 16, 2018 with a three-time weekly service. Flights depart from Hong Kong International Airport to the Maldives’ main Velana International Airport every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.

Hong Kong Airlines had filed for a fourth Hong Kong – Male service from December 7, 2019. The proposed new flight is scheduled for Saturdays.

The airline uses an Airbus A330-300 aircraft, which features a two-class configuration, including 32 full-flat seats in Business Class and 260 seats in Economy Class, for its Maldives service.

Hong Kong Airlines and the city’s flagship carrier Cathay Pacific are the only two airlines offering direct flights between the Maldives and Hong Kong. However, several other airlines, including Singaporean flagship carrier Singapore Airlines and Malaysian low-cost carrier AirAsia, serve the sector via transit routes.

Established in 2006, Hong Kong Airlines boasts an ever-expanding international network covering nearly 40 destinations across Asia Pacific and North America. The airline also maintains codeshare and interline agreements with 94 airline partners.

Hong Kong Airlines, which has its main hub at Hong Kong International Airport, operates an all-Airbus fleet, comprising 31 passenger aircraft and four freighters. With an average age of around five years, the airline has one of the youngest and modern fleets in the world, following the arrival of its first A350 aircraft in September 2017.

Direct flights between the Maldives and Hong Kong are expected to boost tourist arrivals from North East Asia, especially from Hong Kong and mainland China as well.

China, which is the single biggest source market to the Maldives, has rebound after two years of major declines. It currently boasts a marketshare of 17.4 per cent in Maldives tourism, as arrivals increased by 7.6 per cent during the January-July period to reach 172,834.

Crossroads Maldives, the largest integrated leisure and lifestyle destination in Maldives by Thailand’s leading real estate developer, Singha Estate Public Company Limited, has finally opened its doors on its two of the nine islands.

After two years in development, Crossroads was inaugurated at a ceremony on Thursday. Vice President Faisal Naseem, tourism minister Ali Waheed, science and technology minister Mohamed Maleeh Jamal, and fisheries minister Zaha Waheed attended the ceremony.

Vice President Naseem congratulated Singha Estate on the visionary project and said Crossroads provices resources to better understand the Maldives: the Maldives Cultural Centre is a place to catch a glimpse of Maldives’ rich history and heritage, and promote local arts and crafts, whilst the Marine Discovery Centre will help visitors understand the environmental situation.

“Initiatives such as these will help underscore the paramount importance of ensuring that these assets are preserved well into the future,” he said.

Expressing confidence that the project will help boost the economy, the vice president identified that it will provide several employment opportunities to the youth who are eager to unlock their potential by pursuing careers in the hospitality industry. He also expressed his hope that women would take up the employment opportunities at Crossroads.

“It is the aim of this government to ensure that women are able to participate in all our key industries on an equal footing with men,” he said.

The ceremony also celebrated the rich history and the prestigious nature of the island nation through various captivating performances including one by popular local singer Mariyam Maeesha, screening of History Channel’s short documentary, “The Making of Crossroads Maldives”, a light and sound show, and an aerial silk show.

Crossroads, a deeply sustainable development owned by Thailand’s leading developer Singha Estate, encompasses nine idyllic islands fringing the Emboodhoo Lagoon in the South Male Atoll. Two of the islands have been used for the first phase of the project.

The first island is home to the vibrant lifestyle district and heart of the mega project, The Marina @ Crossroads — an 11,000sqm retail and entertainment space.

Due to its proximity to the capital city, the attraction serves to inspire the meeting of cultures between locals and visitors, very much the same way the country had done in the past, catering to a variety of lifestyle inclinations including luxury shopping, fine dining, a state-of-the-art event hall, and PADI-certified water sports and dive centre.

A transit hotel, SAii Lagoon Maldives, a Curio Collection by Hilton, targets short-term visitors who can utilise the facilities at the town centre during their stopover for connecting flights.

The sustainable development aspect of the project can be seen through the efforts made at Maldives Discovery Centre, an interactive educational-centre-cum-museum that promotes environmental conservation and Maldivian local arts and crafts. Another is Marine Discovery Centre, one of the region’s most advanced marine life laboratories, that hosts biologists who carry out research and longitudinal studies on sea-life and coral propagation through a Junior Coral Curator programme and a clownfish release initiative that span within the area of 64,000 square meters.

The second island is Hard Rock Hotel Maldives, developed and managed by Singha Estate’s hospitality arm, S Hotels & Resorts. The hotel introduces memorable music-inspired stays featuring a full range of signature experiences and facilities for all ages. Hard Rock Hotel Maldives is also the brand’s first Maldivian outpost.

Crafted under the tagline “Crossroads: Where Cultures Meet”, world-renowned architects, Bensley Design, honours the Maldives’ historical greatness as a crossroads of ancient maritime trade routes between the East and the West. The creation of Marina @ Crossroads is a glorious marriage of old-world French designs, traditional Arabic themes, as well as design concepts from Portugal, China, and Britain.

“With Cross, we are making history. The project has been an exciting and challenging venture to plan and implement for all parties involved: Thai, Maldivian, and international. And today officially marks our first outstanding achievement. By being the largest integrated leisure and entertainment destination in the Maldives, Crossroads will help maintain the notable and continuously rising tourism markets such as China, India, and the Middle East, and attract new market segments of family and locals to the Maldives,” Chutinant Bhirombhakdi, Chairman of Singha Estate, said.

“Crossroads is going to redefine vacation experience in the Maldives and the entire Indian Ocean region whilst also being deeply sustainable and considerate of its environment, history, and culture.”

Naris Cheyklin, Chief Executive Officer of Singha Estate, said that whilst setting sight on promoting tourism and the local economy, Crossroads is also committed to its mission of “building big, protecting the small” — fashioning a mega project whilst promoting the livelihoods of its inhabitants.

During the construction, there was no concrete mixing and no plastering. Singha Estate commissioned all of the projects’ mega structures to be made in Thailand before being shipped to the Maldives in giant container vessels to avoid harming coral reefs and sea-life.

Crossroads also will be home to the Eight New Wonders of the Maldives, consisting of a coral village, iconic tuna sculptures, sunset point, and Emboodhoo canyon, amongst others.

Mövenpick Resort Kuredhivaru Maldives launches ‘Pesto, Pistou’ Mediterranean menu

Mövenpick Resort Kuredhivaru Maldives has launched a new global menu, ‘Pesto, Pistou’, bringing its international guests and local residents flavours from the Mediterranean.

Marking another gastronomic triumph for a brand synonymous with culinary excellence for more than 70 years, the expert chefs at Mövenpick’s resort in the Maldives have perfected a new and innovative range of pesto’s (Italian) and pistous (French) to create seven experimental dishes, available at Latitude 5.5 throughout October.

“Whilst our guests and our local fans love to return for their favourite classic Mövenpick dishes, we always seek to surprise and delight with innovative seasonal offerings, or special food-related events. We are certain that our Pesto, Pistou menu will excite the palates of even the most experimental foodies whilst providing a fitting send-off to summer with a tribute to the flavours that conjure up the Mediterranean sun and sea,” Maciej Gruszecki, General Manager at Mövenpick Resort Kuredhivaru Maldives, was quoted in a statement, as saying.

Chef Deden Permana, who heads the culinary team at Mövenpick Resort Kuredhivaru Maldives, will lead the kitchen in preparing the ‘Pesto, Pistou’ based dishes. These two classic European sauces are both based on the aromatic herb, basil, which is harvested in late summer.

Savoury favourites will include seared Ahi Tuna with olive, and eggplant pesto and seafood soup with tarragon pistou. For dessert, a sweet treat with a real difference – Bundt cake with chocolate-mint pesto, served alongside a frothy Mövenpick Espresso.

“We are excited to work with these luscious basil-based sauces, introducing them to guests in ways they have not likely experienced before,” Chef Deden, Executive Sous Chef at Mövenpick Resort Kuredhivaru Maldives, was quoted in a statement, as saying.

“The seasonality of using pesto and pistou is important to us, as basil is traditionally harvested in late summer and preserved into these rich, oil-based sauces that are full of colour, flavour, and healthy omega-3s – perfect for brightening up our cuisine, and our spirits, amidst the cooling weather.”

Pesto and pistou are two versions of a flavourful sauce based on basil, olive oil and cheese. Italian pesto, which originates in Genoa, the capital city of Liguria, Italy, is blended from garlic, basil, pine nuts, grated pecorino cheese (or sometimes parmesan) and olive oil while its French cousin, pistou, is a Provençal cold sauce with similar ingredients, but without the pine nuts and with or without cheese.

Mövenpick’s versions add new surprising ingredients to the blend whilst preserving the essence of both Mediterranean speciality sauces to create seven pesto, pistou-inspired dishes:

  • Ahi tuna with olive and eggplant pesto: pan-seared yellowfin tuna fillet with a modern interpretation of ratatouille, pine nuts and black tapenade.
  • Seafood soup with tarragon pistou: a touch of tarragon and a unique blend of sweet aniseed and mild vanilla bring this speciality seafood dish to life.
  • Tagliolini with walnut-basil pesto: walnuts replace pine nuts to create an imitable new pesto blend that is smooth, sweet and deliciously buttery.
  • Black cod with pesto Rosso: accompanied by risotto, made from aged Acquerello rice to absorb every ingredient and flavour in full.
  • Beef fillet with red cabbage pesto: a traditional winter vegetable, with a sweet edge gives this pesto dish punch.
  • Corn-fed chicken breast with bell pepper pesto: with peas, snow peas, egg, a basmati rice galette and sublime bitter-sweet yellow-red pesto.
  • Bundt cake with chocolate-mint pesto: a timeless German cake with a cool mint and rich chocolate pesto twist, served with a Mövenpick Espresso.

Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru and Angsana Ihuru has initiated a monthly event called Connect to Earth from Dusk till Dawn.

Inspired by the Earth Hour Movement, a yearly event celebrated by switching off the lights for one hour, Banyan Tree Resorts Maldives decided to take the movement to the next level and dedicate 12 hours every month to connect to Earth.

September 14th marked the first of what will be a series of Connect to Earth from Dusk Till Dawn events, and the monthly occurrence is set to take place during full moon to take advantage of the moon’s natural luminescence as the two resorts switch off the lights from 6pm until 6am the following day.

“By switching off the lights for one hour, we can make a substantial difference in the energy consumption and we can help reduce the effect of global warming,” Hicham Najdi, the General Manager of Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru and Angsana Ihuru, was quoted in a statement, as saying.

“Just imagine how much more we can save if we switch off the lights for twelve hours every month instead of just one hour every year.”

The resorts dubbed the monthly occurrence as 6to6, taken from the start and end time of the event. The restaurants and bars will be candlelit in the evening and a special full moon in villa dinner can be arranged for the guests upon request.

An “Under the Full Moon Night Snorkel” with the Marine Lab Team will be organised as part of the 6to6, aiming to give a delightfully unique underwater experience to the guests.

The event aims to help raise awareness and show support in sustainable approaches to tackle climate change.

Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru opened its door in 1995 and is the first international chain resort in the Maldives. With just 48 pool villas dotting around the island, privacy and relaxation can easily be attained. The resort has a restaurant, bar, PADI Gold Palm five-star resort dive centre and a Banyan Tree Spa. It is also home to the Banyan Tree Maldives Marine Lab, the first of its kind to be funded and built on a private resort, where guests can learn about marine conservation and partake in the many sustainability activities on offer including coral planting, reef cleaning and daily stingray feeding sessions.

Angsana Ihuru is surrounded by one of the most vibrant and well preserved coral house reefs in the Maldives. The resort has 45 villas, a restaurant and a bar, a PADI Gold Palm five-star resort dive centre and an Angsana Spa.

Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru and Angsana Ihuru are located in North Male Atoll, just 25 minutes away by speedboat from the airport. The two resorts are just five minutes by boat away from each other.

Thomas Cook, one of the leading European tour operators to Maldives is facing race against time to stay in business. The world’s oldest travel company could fall into administration unless it finds £200m in extra funds needed to secure its future.

The company says it is in talks with stakeholders such as leading Chinese shareholder Fosun to bridge a funding gap. Industry analysts say there were still “reasonable prospects” of a deal and suggested the UK government could help.

Tourists have previously been reassured they will not be left out of pocket if the firm sells, splits or closes. That’s because Thomas Cook’s package holidays are Atol protected. This means customers who have booked holidays with the firm are protected and can’t get stranded abroad or be left out of pocket.

However this doesn’t apply in the case of people booking flights and accommodation separately.

Thomas Cook also number of other brands under their umbrella including tour operators, hotels and resorts.

Soneva Fushi has announced plans to host an exclusive five-day Festive Football Camp with legendary international football stars, Mikael Silvestre and Karina LeBlanc.

Young football fans at Soneva Fushi are in for an exciting treat over this year’s festive season. Between December 20 and 24, the world-leading Maldivian resort will be hosting an exclusive Festive Football Camp with former professional football stars, Mikael Silvestre and Karina LeBlanc.

It will be the second time these legendary players have shared their skills and experience with Soneva’s guests, following on from the popularity of the previous football camp that took place over Easter earlier this year.

French player Mikael made his name playing for some of the world’s best-known football clubs – during his illustrious career he played for Inter Milan, Arsenal and Manchester United, as well as gaining 40 caps with the French national side.

Recently retired from her professional career on the pitch, Karina played in goal for some of North America and Canada’s most prestigious women’s teams, as well as representing Canada in five World Cups and two Olympic Games, winning bronze at the London 2012 Olympics.

Aimed at children and teens of all levels and abilities, Soneva Fushi’s five-day programme is priced at USD150++ per child per day.

Training sessions will take a holistic approach, focusing on the different aspects of the ‘beautiful game’ – this will not only include technical and physical skills, such as hand-eye coordination, dribbling and running with the ball, changing speed and controlling and directing the ball, but will also look at psychology and the young players’ social and emotional connection to the sport, including gaining confidence, decision-making, communicating, team-building and making new friends.

Each day will feature around two to three hours of training, split into morning skills sessions and a match every evening. As well as being a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from two of the world’s top former players, participants will also receive a t-shirt as a souvenir of this unique and memorable experience to take home.

World-leading luxury resort operator Soneva runs two resorts in the Maldives, Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani.

In 1995, the award-winning luxury resort Soneva Fushi set the standard for all desert island barefoot luxury hideaways in the Maldives. Located in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Soneva Fushi pairs Robinson Crusoe fantasy with intelligent luxury.

Sixty-two private villas with their own stretch of beach are hidden among dense foliage within touching distance of a pristine coral reef. Intuitive service is provided by Mr./Ms. Friday butlers.

Highlights include the open-air Cinema Paradiso, counting Saturn’s rings in the high-tech Observatory, the home-made chocolate and ice cream rooms, five hundred wines to choose from, six different restaurants and countless destination dining options. In November 2015, Soneva launched a floating villa concept, Soneva in Aqua, a treasure trove children’s Den and a multi-purpose facility encompasses a glass gallery, boutique and studio where guests can learn the art of glass blowing.

If the experiences are magical, the philosophy is simple: No news, no shoes. No pretensions either.

Thomas Cook, leading tour operator to Maldives, collapses

Thomas Cook’s 178-year existence came to an end on Monday after the British travel firm failed to find private investment to keep it afloat, affecting thousands of holidaymakers.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said the tour operator has “ceased trading with immediate effect”.

It has also triggered the biggest ever peacetime repatriation aimed at bringing more than 150,000 British holidaymakers home.

Peter Fankhauser, Thomas Cook’s chief executive, said the firm’s collapse was a “matter of profound regret”.

The tour operator’s failure puts 22,000 jobs at risk worldwide, including 9,000 in the UK.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said the tour operator’s collapse was “very sad news for staff and holidaymakers”.

He urged holidaymakers to be “understanding with staff” amid the “enormous” task of bringing people home.

Shapps has announced that the government and CAA has hired dozens of charter planes to fly customers home free of charge.

The emergency operation, codenamed Operation Matterhorn, will aim to bring home Britons currently on holiday with the firm.

On Sunday, empty aircraft had already started to be flown overseas, ready to bring British tourists home on Monday.

The CAA said in a statement: “All Thomas Cook bookings, including flights and holidays, have now been cancelled.

“We know that a company with such long-standing history ceasing trading will be very distressing for its customers and employees and our thoughts are with everyone affected by this news.”

All customers currently abroad with Thomas Cook who are booked to return to the UK over the next two weeks will be brought home “as close as possible” to their booked return date, a statement said.

Flights will start operating from Monday, with details of each flight to be posted on a dedicated website as soon as they are available.

Customers have been urged not to cut short their holiday or go to the airport without checking the website for more information about their return journey.

The UK CAA is also contacting hotels accommodating Thomas Cook customers, who have booked as part of a package, to tell them that the cost of their accommodation will be covered by the government, through the Air Travel Trust Fund/ATOL cover.

Thomas Cook had secured a £900m rescue deal led by its largest shareholder Chinese firm Fosun in August, but a recent demand from its lending banks to raise a further £200m in contingency funding had put the deal in doubt.

The holiday company had spent all Sunday in talks with lenders trying to secure the additional funding and salvage the deal, but to no avail.

It had also asked the government for financial aid, a solution also urged by Labour and union groups.

But on Sunday Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab told the BBC the government did not “systematically step in” when businesses went under unless there was “a good strategic national interest”

Customers on a package holiday have Atol protection – a fund paid for through industry levies – which will cover the cost of their holiday and repatriation.

Thomas Cook has blamed a series of issues for its problems including political unrest in holiday destinations such as Turkey, last summer’s prolonged heatwave and customers delaying booking holidays because of Brexit.

But the firm has also faced fierce competition from online travel agents and low-cost airlines.

In addition, many holidaymakers are putting together their own holidays and not using travel agents.

What are your rights?

If you are on a package holiday you are covered by the Air Travel Organiser’s Licence scheme (Atol).

The scheme will pay for your accommodation abroad, although you may have to move to a different hotel or apartment.

Atol will also pay to have you brought home if the airline is no longer operating.

If you have holiday booked in the future you will also be refunded by the scheme.

If you have booked a flight-only deal you will need to apply to your travel insurance company or credit card and debit card provider to seek a refund.

When Monarch Airlines collapsed in 2017, the British government organised to bring home all the stranded passengers, whether they were covered by Atol or not.

Thomas Cook and Maldives

Thomas Cook had been one of the leading European tour operators to the Maldives, with the firm heavily contributing to the growth of the UK market in Maldives’ tourism.

The latest official figures released by the Maldives’ tourism ministry put the UK at the fourth position amongst the top source markets to the Maldives with a marketshare of 7.4 per cent. Visitor numbers from the UK saw an increase of 11.1 per cent to reach 73,262 during the first seven months of the year.

Thomas Cook also runs a resort on the island of Eriyadu under its “smartline” brand.

In a joint statement, the Maldives’ tourism ministry, and the official tourism promotion body, Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), assured the best possible support for affected tourists on their return journey. All resort partners have been contacted to confirm the number of Thomas Cook travellers currently staying in the Maldives and to determine their return destination, they said.

“… the government will do everything in its power to ensure the well-being of the passengers affected,” tourism minister Ali Waheed was quoted in the statement, as saying.

Efforts will be made to provide food, assistance and accommodation, if required, they added.

The second Baa Atoll Manta Festival has successfully concluded on the island of Eydhafushi in Baa atoll.

The Baa Atoll Manta Festival, collaboratively spearheaded by Manta Trust, the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Baa Atoll Education Centre (BAEC), Baa Atoll and Eydhafushi Island Councils, and Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru, engaged over 50 businesses and environmental organisations from September 20-21.

Dozens of stalls and activities featured educational games designed to excite 320 participating students from 13 schools about marine conservation.

The memorable opening ceremony featured a welcome dance by students of Manta Trust’s Moodhu Madharusaa Marine Education Programme from BAEC, dancing to the theme song ‘Hanifaru Bay’, written by Abdulla Muaz. Inspirational speeches were given by Baa Atoll Council President Mabrook Naseer, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Director General Ibrahim Naeem, Minister of State for Environment Dr Abdulla Naseer, and Chief Guest Vice President Faisal Naseem.

Vice President Naseem highlighted the sacrifices the community has made to be a part of the Biosphere Reserve and the importance of continuing to protect the Maldives’ precious environment, including the world’s largest recorded population of reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi).

A total of 13 stalls open to the public featured marine conservation themed games and goodies from NGOs including the Olive Ridley Project, the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme, Atoll Marine Centre, Zero Waste Maldives and BeLeaf.

Visitors engaged in competitions offering sustainable prizes, printed their own personalised reusable bag and shopped from Male businesses including Island Bazaar, Oevaali Art shop and Pepper Dots.

Manta Trust offered the unique opportunity to swim with manta rays in virtual reality, whilst Maldives Post offered the international crowd the chance to send manta-themed postcards home.

Despite unfavourable weather, which affected snorkelling-based activities, students were able to engage in a wide range of educational events at the school.

Saturday, September 21, saw the students getting involved in a waste segregation session for World Coastal Clean-up Day, hosted by BAEC, Soneva Fushi, Parley and Manta Trust. Students from 13 islands bought jumbo bags of beach clean-up waste to the event and engaged in a hands-on session to learn how to properly separate recyclables.

A live art competition saw exciting prizes awarded to paintings, which creatively highlighted the plight of the ocean, with the adult category winner receiving return flights from festival Airline Partner, Manta Air.

Saturday afternoon brought the school drama competition, with each performance centred around a different charismatic megafauna species. BAEC received a standing ovation following an emotional performance focused on the threats of fishing on manta rays. Thulhaadhoo took home the second prize whilst K. Dhiffushi won third place following a performance packed with creative costumes.

In the month leading up to the festival, 200 students of 10 schools from Baa and Raa atoll were taken snorkelling with manta rays by partner resorts and the Biosphere Reserve team. Students spent an hour inside the world-renowned Hanifaru Bay, snorkelling with up to 50 of these gentle giants.

The trips built on the event’s aim to inspire young Maldivians to become ocean advocates and engage more with water-based activities, featuring snorkelling equipment funded by donations from last year’s festival.

For Ifaasha Abdul Raheem, the festival’s school coordinator, the experience was memorable.

“This has been one the best experiences in my life! Manta festival has not only boosted my love towards nature, but it also has made me a better person in every possible way. This festival has brought an immense impact to our youth to fall in love with our environment and made them realise the crucial role they can play in their community! Most importantly, this was an opportunity for our students to explore, learn and a golden chance to show their creativity and love towards nature. I loved every bit of it! Glad to be part of this amazing event,” she said.

The festival concluded with an energetic prize giving ceremony and an air of anticipation and excitement for the next event.

The festival was generously sponsored by 15 resorts: Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru, Vakkaru Maldives, Ocean Dimensions at Kihaa Maldives, Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas, The Nautilus Maldives, Reethi Faru Resort, Milaidhoo Island Maldives, Sea-Explorer and Reethi Beach, Finolhu, Amilla Fushi, Dusit Thani Maldives and Ocean Group, The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort, Euro-Divers Maldives and Meeru Island Resort, and Soneva Fushi.
