Guests can also enjoy complimentary experiences such as spa treatments and a cooking class with a visiting chef.

To make the celebration even more memorable, Soneva has created a five-day programme full of captivating experiences.

In addition, each of the properties will host a bespoke culinary journey to celebrate the festivities. The Eid Food Journey will have guests embark on an epicurean tour of surprise culinary venues.

Make a final stop at Mihiree Mithaa, with live music and a delectable array of main courses and desserts prepared by the resort’s master chefs, from a sizzling barbecue and succulent lamb Casbah station, to hand-crafted desserts, artisan chocolates and the finest cheeses from around the world.

World-leading luxury resort operator Soneva runs two resorts in the Maldives, Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani.

In 1995, the award-winning luxury resort Soneva Fushi set the standard for all desert island barefoot luxury hideaways in the Maldives. Located in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Soneva Fushi pairs Robinson Crusoe fantasy with intelligent luxury.

Sixty-two private villas with their own stretch of beach are hidden among dense foliage within touching distance of a pristine coral reef. Intuitive service is provided by Mr./Ms. Friday butlers.

Highlights include the open-air Cinema Paradiso, counting Saturn’s rings in the high-tech Observatory, the home-made chocolate and ice cream rooms, five hundred wines to choose from, six different restaurants and countless destination dining options. In November 2015, Soneva launched a floating villa concept, Soneva in Aqua, a treasure trove children’s Den and a multi-purpose facility encompasses a glass gallery, boutique and studio where guests can learn the art of glass blowing.

If the experiences are magical, the philosophy is simple: No news, no shoes. No pretensions either.

Opened in December 2016, Soneva Jani is Soneva’s newest property and the world-leading luxury hotel group’s second resort in the Maldives.

Soneva Jani is located on the island of Medhufaru within a 5.6 kilometre lagoon in the Noonu atoll, and has uninterrupted ocean views in all directions. The lagoon is 35 minutes by seaplane from Velana International Airport and one hour by speedboat from Soneva Fushi.

Meaning ‘wisdom’ in Sanskrit, Soneva Jani currently comprises 24 overwater villas and one island villa, with additional villas to be built in phase two. Five islands encircle the lagoon, each one with soft white sands and covered in rich tropical vegetation. Four of the five islands will remain untouched, making Soneva Jani the lowest density development in the Maldives. The overwater villas are spaced across the expansive lagoon, offering privacy and extensive views over the Maldives’ turquoise waters. The island villas will be tucked into the lush greenery, providing the ultimate privacy, and all within steps of the beach.

Soneva Jani’s main guest facilities are located at The Gathering, the heart of the overwater villas. This dramatic three story structure is home to the main dining outlets, in addition to the Soneva Spa, library, retail area and wine cellar. It is located next to the Maldives’ first overwater Observatory.

Kandolhu Maldives has appointed David Napier as its Executive Chef.

His most recent ventures saw him as owner of a food and wine consultancy, with prior co-ownership of an acclaimed ‘Chef Hat’-awarded restaurant in Christchurch — all accomplished at a very young age.

Chef David’s recent stints also include the Mandarin Oriental and Berkeley Hotel in London, where he had the opportunity to hone his skills alongside the teams at Michelin-starred establishments like Heston Blumenthal’s ‘Dinner by Heston Blumenthal’ and ‘Marcus’ by Marcus Wareing.

“This pedigree, along with standout wine knowledge are sure to lend invaluable insights to the Kandolhu experience for future guests, allowing us to build on our already fabulous culinary offerings – and raise the bar even higher,” the resort said, in an announcement.

“Join us in congratulating David on his new appointment! And stay tuned for new menus, concepts, and other delicious updates!”

Ringed by an intricate yet stunning coral garden teeming with colourful reef fish, Kandolhu is a patch of paradise hidden in the North Ari Atoll and accessible by a 25-minute scenic seaplane flight. A member of the Small Luxury Hotels, Kandolhu is cleverly arranged to offer maximum privacy yet all within the space of only 200 square metres. The resort offers just 30 villas in five different styles — Jacuzzi Beach Villas, Pool Villas, Duplex Pool Villas, Ocean Villas and Ocean Pool Villas — that feature local architecture with modern interiors.

Kandolhu is home to five gourmet restaurants, boasting the highest restaurant-to-room ratio in the Maldives. The ambience and menu of each restaurant varies greatly: be entertained with a live show in Banzai, the Japanese teppanyaki, delight in an array of fresh seafood on offer in Sea Grill, sit back and gaze at the sparkling Indian Ocean from the Market or enjoy a romantic candlelit dinner in Olive with modern Mediterranean dishes on the card.

The intimate island resort has a spa, and offers a range of recreational activities, including diving, snorkelling, water sports and excursions.

Velana International Airport on Wednesday marked the opening of a new apron at the Maldives main airport.

The apron, built on the southwestern side of the airport island of Hulhule, marked its opening with the arrival of flagship carrier Maldivian’s flight from Bangkok Wednesday morning. The Airbus A330 aircraft was given a water salute as it approached the apron for parking.

The 70,000 sqm apron has three Code E Multiple Aircraft Ramp System (MARS) stands, two dedicated Code E stands and one dedicated Code C stand. It has a combined capacity to accommodate either five wide body aircraft and one narrow body aircraft or two wide body aircraft with seven narrow body aircraft at a time.

Test operations were carried out at the apron last month, demonstrating the manoeuvrability of aircraft and ground handling equipment to comply with ICAO safety requirements.

State owned airport operator Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) is also building another new apron at the eastern side of the airport island. This 60,000 sqm apron will feature four MARS stands, which can accommodate either four wide body aircraft or eight narrow body aircraft at a time.

In addition to the minor improvements, a USD 800 million mega project has been launched to expand and upgrade the main Velana International Airport. The project involves building a brand new runwayan international passenger terminal and a seaplane terminal as well as other support facilities, including a fuel farm that can store 45 million litres and a 120,000 tonne cargo facility.

USD 570 million of the USD 800 million needed for the project have been raised from international financiers, especially Arab funding agencies. It includes a USD 100 million loan from Saudi Fund for Development, a USD 50 million loan from Kuwait Fund, a USD 50 million loan from OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) and a USD 50 million loan from the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development.

China EXIM Bank also granted a loan of USD 400 million for the new runway, which was contracted to Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG) of China. The new runway is set to come into operation later this year.

MACL had also invested USD 50 million from its own funds.

The airport is a key infrastructure that supports the Maldives multi-billion dollar tourism industry. Expansion of the airport is expected to boost tourist arrivals to the island nation as it aims to attract at least two million tourists by 2020.

Meet the Tastemakers – the individuals who together create a unique and unexpected dining experience that will take your breath away.

Chef Benz is the Thai chef named after her father’s favourite brand of car. Discovered by Soneva founders Sonu and Eva, Chef Benz’s unmatched ability to craft exquisite Thai dishes from even the humblest local ingredients has earned her a reputation as one of the country’s most innovative cooking talents.

Discover the intricate craftsmanship of guest chef Kenji Gyoten, scheduled to grace the kitchens of Soneva Fushi throughout 2019 and 2020. Renowned for mastering the ancient hontaegashi hand-flipping technique, he is the youngest Michelin-starred sushi chef in Japan, and one of only four Japanese chefs to be awarded a coveted three Michelin stars. Watching Chef Gyoten prepare sushi is comparable to a choreographed dance. The result is sushi that is so complex and so sophisticated it is a truly rare culinary experience.

From Soneva Fushi, find out more about one of the resort’s most-loved characters. Wearing a smile brighter than the morning sun, Sira has been serving up breakfast at Mihiree Mitha for more than two decades, and is famed for his mouth-watering hoppers, a breakfast treat from his Sri Lankan homeland.

Chef Sobah is proud of his Maldivian heritage. He is known for putting his own contemporary twist on Maldivian recipes handed down by his mother and grandmother. His original restaurant, Sobah’s, located on a deserted island near Soneva Fushi was the first resort restaurant in the Maldives to exclusively offer Maldivian delicacies. Chef Sobah now delights diners at Out of the Blue by Sobah with modern Japanese fare using fish caught fresh from the ocean that day.

Chef David knew the first time that he walked through the doors of a professional kitchen that he had found his place. From an early age he set his sights on working in the best kitchens in the world. To this day, he claims to have never worked a day in his life – his kitchen is his home and cooking is his passion.

Chef Priyantha is head chef at The Crab Shack at Soneva Jani, possibly the most romantic restaurant in the world. He grew up on a diet of lagoon crabs in Sri Lanka and now serves a menu inspired by the family recipes of Soneva chefs.

“Tell me who you are and I’ll tell you what you drink.”

Take a voyage of wine discovery with Soneva sommeliers whose expertise covers the globe and the rich history of wine.

Join Chef Ansari and his team as they take you on a gastronomical journey around the world. The menu provides a guide but the real magic happens when the chefs and guests meet, allowing the chefs to use their creativity and passion to produce a meal that will be remembered forever.

Chef Jenefer grew up foraging around her rural home in the Philippines. Her sense of adventure has never left her and now she uses her knowledge of botany and her skills as a chef to present plant-based dishes that look like works of art.

From humble beginnings, Chef Ravi used his wits and his charm to persuade those around him to teach him to cook. He has since worked in some of the best restaurants in the world. Visiting his restaurant Down to Earth is like walking into a family home where you will be greeted with a smile, a warm welcome and exquisite food cooked from the heart.

Chef Kichii Okabe blends Japanese tradition with an informality and playfulness that charms his guests. A Japanese grand master chef with a Michelin star heritage, he is on a mission to make people happy, and he knows good food makes people happy.

US-based Universal Aviation and Inner Maldives Holidays has celebrated the official grand opening of their joint venture business aviation ground support location, Universal Aviation Maldives.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the Maagiri Hotel in Maldives capital Male Thursday afternoon. It was attended by clients, partners and local officials.

“The Maldives area popular but potentially challenging destination for our clients, so it was important for us to identify a partner in Inner Maldives that will not only reduce our customers’ risk and stress on the ground but provide them with an unforgettable experience through pro-active trip management, versus relying solely on third-parties,” Greg Evans, Chairman of Universal, said.

“Universal aviation Maldives will raise the bar for the private jet departure and landing experience so that it matches the luxury experience at local resorts.”

Universal Aviation Maldives is headquartered at the Maldives main Velana International Airport. The location’s main operation is located at the island of Male, but it also provides supervisory services at all airports throughout the Maldives, including Gan International Airport in the southernmost atoll of Addu, Maamigili Airport in central Alif Dhaal atoll, and Hanimaadhoo International Airport in the northern Haa Dhaal atoll.

“Tourism is a major reason for much of the corporate jet aviation traffic to the Maldives,” Abdulla Ghiyas, Managing Director at Universal Aviation Maldives, said.

“Our team members are trained to Universal Aviation’s ground support standards, but are also experts in local tourism and can help arrange discounts for crews on local hotels, air transport, and tours.”

Universal Aviation Maldives is Universal Aviation’s eighth location in the Asia-Pacific region.

“Universal Aviation Maldives will support local business aviation traffic but just as importantly will be a local advocate for the industry in the Maldives,” Charlie Mularski, Senior Vice President for International Operations at Universal said.

“Our team will work closely with the Maldives government to identify opportunities to drive traffic, and improve infrastructure and access while also benefiting the local economy.”

Universal Aviation, the ground support division of Universal Weather and Aviation, Inc., has more than 40 locations in 20 countries, including 19 in the Asia-Pacific region with the addition of Universal Aviation Maldives. The Texas-headquartered company offers products and services including international flight planning and scheduling, weather briefings, fuelling programmes, aircraft ground handling and aviation security.

Inner Maldives Holidays is one of the pioneers in launching outbound packages and holidays in the Maldives offering exciting and discounted holidays to Sri Lanka, Dubai, Thailand, Malaysia, Turkey, Jordan, India, Indonesia, Bali, Krabi, Singapore, Hong Kong, Seychelles and many more.

The company, which currently has business operations in Dubai, Seychelles, Malaysia and Sri Lanka, has also won multiple international awards, and has been recognised as a leading wholesaler for inbound tourists into Maldives and leading FBO at the airport for private jets. It is also affiliated to its sister companies, including Ace Aviation Services Maldives, Ace Travels Maldives and Aitken Spence Maldives, representing major airlines and brands in the Maldives.

Velana International Airport serves as the main gateway to the Maldives, renowned world over for its unique natural beauty and luxury tourist resorts. More than 30 international airlines, including major players such as British Airways, SriLankan Airlines, Emirates and Etihad Airways, operate scheduled flights to the airport, carrying over a million tourists per annum from across the world to the island paradise.

During the festive season, the Maldives main airport welcomed 83 private jets over a five-day period, setting a new record.

Maldives welcomes record 1.4 million tourist arrivals in 2018

Maldives welcomed a record 1.4 million tourists in 2018, government announced Thursday.

Tourism minister Ali Waheed told journalists that 1,484,274 tourists visited the Maldives in 2018. It was a 6.8 per cent increase from the 1,389,542 tourists that chose to holiday in the Maldives in 2017, he added.

According to figures released by the tourism ministry, tourist demographics remained largely unchanged in 2018, as Europe dominated with a marketshare of 49 percent of the total tourist arrivals, followed by Asia Pacific with a 42 per cent marketshare. Americas secured the third position with a five per cent marketshare, whilst Middle East slid to the fourth with a four per cent marketshare. African countries also contributed one per cent to the total tourist arrivals to the Maldives.

Despite a downturn of 7.6 per cent in arrivals, China retained its position as the Maldives’ single biggest source market with a marketshare of 19.1 per cent (283,116 tourists).

All the other top 10 source markets posted positive growth in arrivals in 2018.

Germany (4.8 per cent growth), the UK (10.2 per cent growth) and Italy (7.1 per cent growth) secured the second, third and fourth position, respectively. Maldives’ closest neighbour India contributed 6.1 per cent to the total arrivals and posted a growth of nine per cent to secure the fifth place, whilst Russia (14.5 per cent growth), France (19.1 per cent growth), the US (9.5 per cent growth) and Japan (2.8 per cent growth) followed on the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth position, respectively. Arrivals from Australia increased by 36.2 per cent, making it the 10th biggest source market to Maldives tourism.

Meanwhile, other factors such as average duration of stay, bed nights and occupancy also posted positive growth in 2018.

Despite major increases in accommodation capacity across all segments, including resorts (up 57 per  cent), guesthouses (17.2 per cent), hotels (27.9 per cent) and safari vessels (9.5 per cent), the average occupancy rate recoded a slight growth of one per cent in 2018 compared to the previous year. The occupancy rate remained at above 60 per cent throughout the year, except for four months during the traditionally off summer season.

Average duration of stay also increased by 0.2 per cent to reach 6.4 days in 2018 compared to the previous year. Total bed nights stood at 9,470,379, which was an increase of 10.2 per cent over 2017.

This positive growth in the tourism industry comes amidst concerns by private organisations representing industry stakeholders such as the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) over the lack of effort and budget to promote the Maldives as a destination.

These concerns come as the world-famous holiday destination struggles to match an increased bed capacity.

Over the past few years, dozens of uninhabited islands have been leased to local and foreign resort developers. Several international brands have entered into the market, increasing the number of resorts to more than 130. That number is set to increase as another 20 resorts are expected to open over the next two years.

Along with the new resort openings come the challenge of increasing demand from budget travellers who choose guesthouses over luxury resorts that the Maldives is known for. The guesthouse sector has rapidly expanded with over 500 guesthouses in operation today.

The previous government announced steps to maintain a structured growth in tourism, including a slowdown in leasing islands for resort development and increased marketing efforts in key markets such as China and the Middle East in order to reach an ambitious target of a record 1.5 million tourist arrivals this year.

Meanwhile, the new government has pledged to ramp up tourism promotion.

Reflecting the new government’s pledge, the state budget for 2019 includes MVR 104,200,000 (USD 6.7 million) for tourism promotion, up from MVR 34,733,333 (USD 2.2 million) this year and the previous year.

Soneva Jani opens newest restaurant, The Crab Shack

Soneva Jani has unveiled the latest addition to its culinary offerings, the Crab Shack.

The 32 cover restaurant and 14 seat bar is located on Soneva Jani’s southwest beach, on the opposite side of the island to Cinema Paradiso, and is comprised of two levels. The ground floor is taken up by the restaurant, kitchen and bar area, with the first floor deck designed especially for guests to relax on tiered daybeds and enjoy the Maldivian sunsets while sipping on rosé wine or other beverages.

The Crab Shack is open for lunch and dinner with an á la carte menu. Upstairs serves only drinks and light snacks. While no local crabs will be on the menu (watch The Mangrove Network video from the Change-Maker Series), Sri Lankan mud crabs, Alaskan crabs and Kamchatka crabs (all Marine Stewardship Council certified) are the highlights. Each day the Crab Shack will only serve one type of crab on a rotating basis. The dishes that can be ordered include chili crab, crab curry (both Thai and Sri Lankan varieties of curry), garlic crab, black pepper crab, Szechuan spicy wok-fried crab, Vietnamese wok-fried crab with tamarind, ginger and black pepper.

The menu is also supplemented with Mediterranean dishes, including marinated sardines, mussels meunière, crab and seafood bouillabaisse (subject to availability), spicy seafood salad, and a ceviche of the day. There will also be a seafood platter that includes soft shell crabs, calamari, scallops and more. This platter can be ordered cold or warm (steamed, wok-fried or barbecued). A number of vegetable based side dishes will also be available, using organic greens from the resort’s gardens. Dishes include broccoli with caramelised garlic and marinated artichokes. When it comes to drinks there will be a focus on rosé and Sauvignon Blanc, while there will also be a selection of red wine.

Guests will get to dine barefoot, with toes in the sand, in line with Soneva’s ‘No News, No Shoes’ ethos. The Crab Shack is open-air, allowing for the cool sea breeze to flow through and uninterrupted views out across the lagoon, towards the sunset.

The design of the restaurant and bar uses reclaimed wood and driftwood timber to offer guests a rustic shack experience, while also giving a nod to how Maldivian’s traditionally built their homes before they had conventional building materials. Diners will sit around repurposed tree trunk logs that incorporate recycled glass plate supports and reclaimed barrels. There is a central communal table, while around this there are tables of four, which can all be rearranged depending on party numbers. The main support pillars are made out of entire tree trunks.

Facilities on the island include the overwater Cinema Paradiso, the Eco Centro Waste-to-Wealth centre, organic gardens, tennis courts, water sports champa and Zuhair’s Beach on a desert island in the lagoon.

Maldives has taken part at the BOOT Fair in Messe Düsseldorf, Germany.

Ten representatives from five different companies from the Maldives tourism industry have travelled to Dusseldorf for the 50th BOOT Fair, which is one of the largest dive and water sports trade fairs in the world.

Over 1,900 exhibitors from 68 countries are showcasing their products in 14 categories at this year’s exhibition. Some 250,000 visitors from 90 nations are expected to visit the fair, which is focused on the motto “360° water sports experience”. This year’s fair will also introduce several interactive activities for visitors including dive experiences, surfing, water sports and electronic sports.

With 99 per cent of territory being water, Maldives has traditionally been a dive destination and continues to attract divers every year. Based on the preliminary findings of the Maldives Visitor Survey conducted in September 2016, 16 per cent of the tourists were motivated to visit the Maldives because of its unique underwater beauty.

Known internationally as one of the world’s best scuba diving destinations, the Maldives has an abundance of dive sites with one thrilling dive opportunity after another. The islands of the Maldives have consistently warm waters with outstanding visibility throughout the year, and consist of exhilarating dive sites such as vibrant thilas, exciting channels, coral-filled overhangs and fascinating wrecks.

“As this is an important aspect of the destination, promoting our underwater beauty is essential and BOOT fair is an ideal platform to reach this segment,” Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) said, in a statement.

“Boot will help us reach to this niche segment of the German market.”

Germany remains the second largest source market for the Maldives tourism industry, with arrival numbers climbing to 117,532 in 2018 from the 112,109 in 2017. It was an increase of 4.8 per cent.

Play provides delightful diversions for those looking for more active pursuits. On the water, you can kayak around the islands or discover why Niyama is amongst the hottest surfing destinations.
