Hideaway Beach Resort & Spa is set to become an absolute hotspot for dessert lovers in the fall, as the luxury resort hosts award-winning Swedish pâtissier Seb Pettersson.

From October 27 to November 10, Chef Pettersson, together with Hideaway’s Executive Chef Sebastien Pinson, will spoil guests of the luxury resort with exceptional sweet sensations.

The highlight of his stay is a gala dinner for in-house guests, featuring the best desserts the island has ever seen. A dessert buffet at Matheefaru Restaurant on Tuesday, October 29, as well as the gala dinner at Sunset Pool Café on Thursday, November 7, will see Chef Pettersson team up with Hideaway’s Executive Chef Pinson to combine their talents and create a unique culinary experience.

Christian Szabo, General Manager at Hideaway, appreciates the creative work of the Swede: “We look forward to a refreshing, modern twist on textures, ingredients and presentation by Chef Seb Petterson.”

During his stay at Hideaway, Chef Pettersson will also be training the resorts’ kitchen staff in his art and share his tips for exquisite delicacies.

Guests who visit the resort at a later date, can rejoice as well; the artful desserts created by Chef Pettersson will still available in the resort’s restaurants.

“This is another step to take the culinary experience to the next level. We will continue to bring more and more talented and renowned chefs to the resort, making it an exquisite culinary destination in the Maldives,” Michael Wieser, CEO of parent company Lily Hotels, said.

One of the youngest members to have ever joined the Swedish confectioner scene, Chef Pettersson’s CV already boasts impressive achievements. He spent his apprenticeship at Michelin-starred restaurants, including Oaxen Krog, Operakällaren and Ekstedt in Stockholm.

With his imaginative and artfully designed creations, Chef Pettersson surprised the jury of the “Culinary World Cup 2018” in Luxembourg with new interesting flavours and designs in 2018. For example, he uniquely combined milk chocolate with extraordinary herbs and almonds into a work of art, whilst his combination of honey, chocolate and roasted sesame helped the Swedish national cooking team bring home gold.

In 2016, Chef Pettersson presented his creations for the Swedish Junior Culinary Team at the IKA Culinary Olympics in Erfurt. His extraordinary dessert of cherries, chocolate and pistachios was placed on the winners’ podium and was awarded gold.

Hideaway Beach Resort is located on the crescent-shaped island of Dhonakulhi in the northernmost Haa Alif atoll of the Maldives, 290km from capital Male. Characteristic features are unique quietness, comfort and privacy in a 297,000sqm tropical setting.

A total of 103 spacious villas in 10 categories are situated at a great distance from each other, either amongst evergreen tropical vegetation or above the turquoise blue lagoon. A personal butler is available in almost all villa categories and fulfils all guest wishes. The resort’s culinary diversity is reflected in four restaurants and bars.

With a paradisiacal house reef to be explored directly from the beach, Hideaway Beach Resort is the only hotel in the Maldives with a fully equipped harbour. It also offers the largest rum and whiskey menu in the Maldives, and is home to The Spa at Hideaway Maldives, diving school Meridis Dive & Relax, and a professionally supervised Kids Club.

Voting for the Guesthouse Edition began on September 20 and will continue until October 20. Votes can be cast online or via SMS.

The Guesthouse Edition features 96 nominees in 14 categories.

More than 65 guesthouses have been nominated for the awards, including seven islands contesting in the ‘Leading Guesthouse Island’ and ‘Leading Beach Island’ category. Nominees include properties from across the archipelago, bringing together a collection of guesthouses that projects the diversity of the destination.

Winners in the Guesthouse Edition are selected based on a combined score, which takes into account their ratings on TripAdvisor (60 per cent) as well as popular vote (40 per cent) collected through a web portal and an SMS voting platform.

As a major shift from previous years, MATATO will be presenting the ‘Leading Guesthouse Award’ to four winners selected from four different parts of the country, including South, North, and Central region. The leading guesthouse in the satellite town of Hulhumale will also be recognised as a separate category.

Winners of the Guesthouse Edition will be announced in October at a special function to be hosted in the island of Thoddoo in Alif Alif atoll.

In 2017, the Guesthouse Edition received more than 175 nominations and registered a record number of 176,000 votes.

Initiated in 2012 by MATATO, the Maldives Travel Awards celebrate and honour the best tourism and hospitality products in the Maldives whilst fostering relationships with suppliers and local travel agents. From 20 categories in 2012, the awards have now expanded into three editions totalling 55 categories.

MATATO hosts three editions: the People’s Edition, which recognises successful pioneers and long serving individuals in the tourism industry, a Guesthouse Edition, which celebrates the outstanding performance of the up and coming guesthouse sector, and the Grand Gala, which is exclusive for winners in the categories for resorts, airlines and liveaboards.

The visiting wine makers include Vincenzo D’andrea from Italy’s Bibi Graetz, Rajat Parr from the American Domaine de la Côte, Frédéric Engerer from France’s Artémis Domaines, Rodolphe Péters from Champagne Pierre Péters, and Álvaro Palacios from Spain’s Bodega Álvaro Palacios.

Tucked away within the collection of islands that form the northern Noonu atoll, Velaa Private Island is elegantly positioned to overlook enchanting vistas of a cerulean ocean. Its name derived from generations of sea turtles that flock there to nest and hatch; it is comprised of 47 private villas, houses and exclusive residences. The resort also includes a Romantic Pool Residence which can only be reached by boat.

At Velaa Private Island, all details have been considered: each villa comes with a personal butler, all services offered can be tailored to personal specifications. Attention to detail everywhere is also impeccable: stone pavements from the desert in Jordan, Indonesian flowerpots, luxury wood panelling from Borneo, and glimmering Italian marble.

Velaa Private Island offers endless exclusive opportunities. These unique offerings include the Maldives’ first and only snow room, the largest and most extensive wine collection in the region, one of the few Maldivian resorts with a private submarine, an extraordinary kids’ club conceptualised as the world’s ideal kids’ club by the owner’s seven-year-old daughter, and the only resort in Asia with a My Blend by Clarins spa.

Personalising and tailoring the entirety of the island depending on specific requirements, there is no limit to ensure the ultimate experience. Guests can sit back in the knowledge that the island’s highly trained and dedicated butlers will cater to each and every whim. Whether it is watching a spectacular fireworks display within the Maldivian night sky, dancing into the early hours with an Al fresco live music event, stepping aboard the island’s private yacht for a glamorous sunset cruise or enjoying a private, open air cinema night, anything is possible. Other interactive activities perfect for private groups include gourmet cooking classes with one of the resort’s chefs or wine tasting within the Maldives’ largest wine cellar.

For those looking to get involved in some Indian Ocean adventure, Velaa’s high-tech water toys, including the hover board, jetpack and fly board serve as the definitive adrenaline rush. Whilst discovering the wonders beneath the island’s welcoming waters, guests can learn to dive or simply snorkel the coral rainbow.

Maldives launches Thomas Cook collapse impact assessment

An assessment has been launched to determine the impact of British tour operator Thomas Cook’s collapse on the Maldives’ tourism industry, the island nation’s government announced Wednesday.

Tourism minister Ali Waheed told journalists that a joint assessment with the economic and finance ministries is being conducted to determine any potential impact of Thomas Cook’s collapse on the Maldives’ main economic activity. Challenges faced by local travel companies will also be assessed, he added.

“Thomas Cook had been a major player in the Maldives’ tourism industry and its collapse will definitely affect our industry. But we are taking this as an opportunity and we’re prepared to do what’s necessary to mitigate any damage,” the minister said.

“We’ve met with officials from Thomas Cook as well to get a clear understanding of the situation. We’re confident that we can turn this around and ensure that our industry partners do not suffer.”

The Maldivian authorities have put in place necessary measures, including a dedicated help desk, at the country’s main Velana International Airport to ease the situation for holidaymakers waiting to return home. Efforts are being made to provide food, assistance and accommodation.

Minister Waheed noted that assistance has been provided to some 804 tourists in Maldives affected by Thomas Cook’s collapse. More tourists booked via Thomas Cook are expected to arrive in the Maldives over the next 24 hours as well, he added.

The minister stressed that the Maldives will not send away any tourist. Accommodation had been arranged at the airport transit hotel for those needing it, whilst several resorts have provided complimentary holiday packages to some affected by the situation, he said.

“The Maldives is known for its warm hospitality. We will work with our industry partners to accommodate any and all tourists affected by this unfortunate situation. I’ve personally met some who were devastated because of this situation,” the minister said.

“Some tourists have been offered discounted packages as well. We’re doing everything possible to ensure that the Maldivian holiday experience that people the world over had come to enjoy and love.”

Thomas Cook’s 178-year existence of came to an end on Monday after the British travel firm failed to find private investment to keep it afloat, affecting thousands of holidaymakers.

The UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is co-ordinating the repatriation, the biggest in peacetime, after the tour operator “ceased trading with immediate effect”. UK authorities hope to get some 16,000 holidaymakers back home on chartered flights.

Thomas Cook had secured a £900m rescue deal led by its largest shareholder Chinese firm Fosun in August, but a recent demand from its lending banks to raise a further £200m in contingency funding had put the deal in doubt.

The holiday company had spent all Sunday in talks with lenders trying to secure the additional funding and salvage the deal, but to no avail.

Its plea for government aid was also rejected.

Customers on a package holiday have Atol protection – a fund paid for through industry levies – which will cover the cost of their holiday and repatriation.

Thomas Cook has blamed a series of issues for its problems including political unrest in holiday destinations such as Turkey, last summer’s prolonged heatwave and customers delaying booking holidays because of Brexit.

But the firm has also faced fierce competition from online travel agents and low-cost airlines.

In addition, many holidaymakers are putting together their own holidays and not using travel agents.

Thomas Cook had been one of the leading European tour operators to the Maldives, with the firm heavily contributing to the growth of the UK market in Maldives’ tourism.

The latest official figures released by the Maldives’ tourism ministry put the UK at the fourth position amongst the top source markets to the Maldives with a marketshare of 7.4 per cent. Visitor numbers from the UK saw an increase of 11.1 per cent to reach 73,262 during the first seven months of the year.

Thomas Cook also runs a resort on the island of Eriyadu under its “smartline” brand.

Raffles Hotels & Resorts has opened the overwater villas at Raffles Maldives Meradhoo, completing the resort’s offering.

Set on the southern tip of the Maldives in the remote and pristine Gaafu Alif Atoll, Raffles Maldives Meradhoo’s Beach Island Experience opened in May. A palm tree-peppered private island, it comprises 21 beach villas and residences, a sublime spa, beachside restaurants and a world-class dive centre with an on-site marine biologist.

Just moments away by boat, Raffles Maldives Meradhoo’s Overwater Island Experience — a unique experience, offering complete intimacy, unreachable by foot — completes the resort.

Officially opened on September 22, Raffles Maldives Meradhoo’s Overwater Island Experience completes the resort. With its vast overwater villas and residences, sophisticated Nikkei restaurant Yuzu and sunset-facing Yapa pool bar, it will provide unparalleled luxury to those who dream of a life spent on the water.

Together these two private islands offer two distinct experiences, bound together by Raffles’ legendary service.

All the facilities of the resort – and the very best of the Maldives – will be at their full disposal. A unique offering, a Marine Butler is available to every guest and will happily lead snorkelling tours of the resort’s two remarkable and endlessly fascinating house reefs.

Gaafu Alifu atoll is one of the world’s largest and deepest atolls and the clear, blissfully warm waters immediately surrounding the Raffles resort teem with a kaleidoscope of colourful fish. Guests are encouraged to keep an eye out for Apollo, one of the 20 resident hawksbill and green turtles that regularly swim by to say hello.

“For couples looking for an unforgettable romantic hideaway, our exceptionally spacious villas and the discreet expertise of the Raffles butler service redefines the resort experience. From intimate dining with our private chef service to snorkelling and diving in the world’s most breathtaking coral reefs, we create a place where guests can enjoy the best of both worlds in a destination known for its stunning surroundings,” Oliver Larcher, General Manager of Raffles Maldives Meradhoo, was quoted in a statement, as saying.

On the beach island, the overwater Raffles Spa combines Eastern practices with age-old local influences and offers highly personalised facials by Biologique Recherche; rejuvenating body treatments from Aromatherapy Associates; and signature manicure and pedicure services by Margaret Dabbs London.

An expansive gym caters to all fitness levels; yoga sessions are held on an ocean-facing deck; a jogging route winds its way along gardens abloom with hibiscus and bougainvillea; visiting practitioners will lead practice sessions in tai chi, mindfulness and more.

Relaxed feet-in-the-sand dining is encouraged here, too. The Firepit is an outdoor barbecue restaurant where hearty seafood and meat specialties such as spicy lobster with green papaya and tender beef tenderloin are flame-grilled over the charcoal fire. The tables and chairs carved from the sand are set directly on the shore for uninterrupted views of the starlit skyline.

Starting with healthy smoothies and freshly baked pastries, breakfast is a highlight at the all-day international restaurant Thari.

Paying homage to its namesake at Raffles Singapore, guests can enjoy the signature Maldives Sling at the Long Bar which features a special concoction of gin, grapefruit, coconut, cinnamon and clove that mirrors the Maldivian evening sunset.

The overwater island makes the most of its seascape setting at pool bar, Yapa, where world-class mixologists create signature cocktails inspired by the spirits from South America and Japan. Guests can enjoy a Pisco sour and delicious tacos whilst watching the evening sunset over the Indian Ocean.

At adjacent fine-dining restaurant Yuzu, Peruvian chef Anibal Torres serves authentic Nikkei cuisine with a refreshing blend of Japanese and Peruvian influences using sustainable seafood from a locally sourced market. Bespoke dining experiences include a sunrise breakfast on a private sandbank or an exclusive Champagne and sashimi by the cruise deck with the company of playful dolphins.

Wherever guests spend the night, they will reside in some of the largest villas in the Maldives – each featuring a large marble bathtub, private pool and outdoor shower. Surrounded by lush foliage, the beach villas offer a sunrise or sunset view whilst the overwater villas overlook the dazzlingly turquoise water.

“Accor is bringing to the resort our expertise in delivering unparalleled luxury experiences renowned in our Raffles brand. The Raffles collection now includes 14 distinguished properties in leading addresses across 12 countries and we are thrilled to welcome guests at the first Raffles in the Maldives,” Patrick Basset, Chief Operating Officer, Accor Upper Southeast & Northeast Asia and the Maldives, said.

On both islands, the luxurious two-bedroom residences provide an exclusive retreat for families and friends, whilst the Raffles Royal Residence offers the perfect setting for a very special celebration. Opening on the beach island next year, this three-bedroom hideaway is the ultimate Indian Ocean luxury that features an infinity pool, endless space and a retractable roof on its upper level so guests can enjoy the beautiful night sky under the stars.

AccorHotels took over the management of the existing resort on the island of Meradhoo from Dubai-based hospitality group Jumeirah in 2017, with plans to reposition the luxury resort under the iconic Raffles Hotels & Resorts brand.

Raffles Maldives Meradhoo boasts 21 island villas and 16 ocean villas with private pools, three restaurants, a scenic cocktail bar and an array of facilities and activities to relax, rejuvenate and reinvigorate the body, mind and spirit. Maldives welcomes world champion freediver William Trubridge for world-record attempt

Maldives has welcomed world champion freediver William Trubridge, as the island nation attempts to break the record for most people freediving simultaneously.

Trubridge, who arrived in the Maldives Thursday morning, will participate in the world record attempt on October 1. The “Neyvaa” freediving event, organised as part of the World Tourism Day 2019 celebrations, will witness at least 500 people freediving off Baros Maldives.

The Maldives is attempting to break the record held by ‘La Scuola del Mare 2’ (Verona), in Torri del Benaco, Verona. Verona set the record for the most people freediving simultaneously on October 11, 2009 with 280 people.

Trubridge is a world champion and double world record holding freediver from New Zealand. He was born in the UK but moved to New Zealand when he was 18 months old.

As of 2013, Trubridge holds the world record in the free immersion and the constant weight without fins disciplines, and was the first to break the 100m barrier unassisted.

Trubridge mainly competes in the depth disciplines. He additionally scored the highest number of points for an individual at Team’s World Championships, 313.3, which he achieved at the 2010 Freediving Team’s World Championships held in Okinawa, Japan.

On 18 January 2011, Trubridge won the World’s Absolute Freediver Award (WAFA) naming him best all around freediver, with the highest combined score in six freediving disciplines: static apnea, dynamic apnea with fins, dynamic apnea without fins (pool disciplines), constant weight apnea with fins, constant weight without fins, and free immersion (depth disciplines).

Trubridge is an Apnea Academy instructor and as of 2013 operates a freediving school and annual competition, both called Vertical Blue, at Dean’s Blue Hole in Long Island, Bahamas from September to May. During the summer he teaches courses in Europe and trained at Tenerife Top Training Centre.

Trubridge was the main subject of a documentary entitled “Breathe” directed by Martin Khodabakhshian, which documents Trubridge’s pursuits in 2010 to become the first free diver ever to reach 300 feet with a single breath in the discipline of constant weight no fins.

On February 15, 2019 Trubridge became the first man to complete an ‘underwater crossing’ of one of the major channels, swimming across the Cook Strait as a series of 934 breath hold dives. He wore fins and swam with a dolphin kick horizontally underwater at a depth between three-five metres, surfacing only for short recoveries during which he remained immobile.

The crossing took nine hours 15 minutes, and was done to raise awareness of the plight of New Zealand’s Hector’s dolphin and Maui’s Dolphins, which are both threatened with imminent extinction due predominantly to fishing bycatch in their territory.

Celebrated Thai photographer Chi Wai David Lau has arrived in Maldives to capture the beauty and culture of the island nation, in a bid to promote the destination.

David will be staying in Kuramathi Maldives and Jumeirah Vittaveli, as well as Season Paradise. At these locations, he will experience the Maldivian hospitality whilst capturing the natural beauty and culture of the Maldives through his lens.

The pictures taken during his stay will be unveiled in Siam Paragon, a popular mall located in the heart of Thai capital Bangkok.

David, whose interest in photography began at the young age of eight, generally takes pictures that showcase the unique cultural aspects of the countries he visits.

His recent exhibitions in Bangkok featured pictures from his trips to Sichuan, Tibet, Indonesia, Russia, Kenya and Morocco. His most recent published work displays photos from his visit to Russia and Sichuan, China.

David has received the Associateship of Photography from Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain and the Royal Photographic Society of Thailand.

The celebrated Thai photographer is in the Maldives as part of a series of familiarisation trips conducted by the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) to promote the Maldives.

MMPRC kicked off the series of familiarisation trips in April, starting with a team of Indian journalists and bloggers. The official tourism promotion entity has brought in teams from the UK, China, South Korea, as well as countries from Eastern Europe.

“MMPRC aims to promote Maldives tourism in Thailand and increase arrivals,” a statement issued by MMPRC read.

A total of 32,436 tourists from Thailand visited the Maldives in 2018 — an increase of 24.6 per cent from the previous year. That growth has continued this year, as 17,697 Thai tourists visited the Maldives by the end of July.

Trans Maldivian Airways welcomes 53rd aircraft, to add three more

Maldives’ main seaplane operator Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) has announced plans to add four additional seaplanes to its fleet, with the first of the four arriving in the Maldives Thursday.

In what the airline calls its most aggressive expansion drive in its history of more than 30 years, TMA took delivery of its 53rd aircraft on Thursday. It was ferried from Santa Maria, Portugal and reached the Maldives’ main Velana International Airport at around 6.10pm.

The remaining three aircraft are scheduled to arrive in the Maldives in the upcoming months, expanding the airline’s fleet to 56 aircraft.

“TMA has played a pivotal role in developing the tourism infrastructure in Maldives and the latest addition to its fleet is in line with its commitment to serve the growing demand with the new upcoming resorts and also provide added flexibility to all its partner resorts,” a statement issued by TMA read,

“As the company welcomes the 53rd aircraft to its fleet, it would like to thank all its partners for their invaluable contributions and everlasting support in the growth story of TMA.”

TMA started in 1989 as a company operating a helicopter fleet under the name Hummingbird Island Helicopters.

Eight years later, the name was changed to Hummingbird Island Airways, as the first seaplane was added to the fleet. The transition to a seaplane-only fleet was completed in 1999. A year later, the name Trans Maldivian Airways came to be, and still today represents a synonym for connecting the Maldives islands.

In February 2013, Blackstone, one of the world’s leading investment and advisory firms, acquired controlling stakes in TMA and its sole competitor Maldivian Air Taxi (MAT), and merged the two under the TMA brand.

A consortium led by US-based Bain Capital and Chinese conglomerate Tempus Group had in 2017 bought TMA from Blackstone for around USD 550 million.

TMA currently operates an all-amphibian fleet of 53 Twin Otter aircraft on regular flights throughout the Maldivian archipelago, making it the largest seaplane operator in the world.

In 2016, TMA operated over 120,000 flights, transferring close to a million passengers, including 80,000 residents.

Seaplane is the preferred mode of transport between the main Velana International Airport and dozens of resorts, especially those located in the outer atolls.

Maldives’ tourist arrivals post 12.4 per cent growth in Aug

Tourist arrivals to the Maldives in August recorded year-over-year growth of 12.4 per cent, the island nation’s tourism ministry announced Wednesday.

Official figures for the month of August released by the tourism ministry show that a total of 139,338 tourists visited the Maldives during the month — an 12.4 per cent increase over August 2018.

According to the August statistics, total arrivals for the past eight months of the year increased by 16.6 per cent to reach 1,134,071 compared to the same period last year.

The strong performance in the January-August period is mostly due to a significant rise in tourist arrivals from the traditional Europe market, which recorded year-over-year growth of 15.6 per cent, and the relatively new American market, which recorded year-over-year growth of 25.5 per cent.

Tourist arrivals from Europe stood at 546,373 in the past eight months, accounting to a market share of 48.2 per cent, whilst the Americas contributed 4.9 per cent of the total arrivals. Asia Pacific also contributed 42.2 per cent of the total tourist arrivals with 478,048 tourists from the region holidaying in the Maldives by the end of August.

Relatively new markets such as Africa and the Middle East also maintained their strong performance.

Middle East saw its market share reach 3.9 per cent due to a 14.9 per cent increase in the number of tourist arrivals (42,774) in the January-August period, whilst Africa, which observed a 22.4 per cent growth in arrivals, contributed one per cent (11,555) of the total tourist arrivals over the past eights months.

All the top five source markets posted positive growth in arrivals by the end of August.

Despite a slight year-over-year drop of 2.1 per cent in arrivals in August, China maintained its position as the top contributor to Maldives tourism with a marketshare of 18.1 per cent, as arrivals from China increased by 5.9 per cent during the January-August period to reach 205,591.

India, which had overtaken traditional European markets to claim the second spot, maintained its position, as the Maldives’ closest neighbour retained a marketshare of 9.2 per cent with a 104.1 per cent growth in tourist arrivals during the past eights months of the year. A total of 104,242 tourists from India spent their vacation in the Maldives during the period.

Italy, which had in May lost the second place to India, maintained its position as the third biggest source market with a market share of 8.1 per cent. Arrivals from Italy increased by 32.1 per cent to reach 92,162 in the January-August period.

Germany and the UK, which slid to fourth and fifth position in May before exchanging their positions in July, exchanged places again in August, as the UK once again fell to the fifth position with a marketshare of 7.3 per cent, whilst Germany’s marketshare increased to 7.5 per cent. Arrivals from Germany grew by 19.1 per cent to reach 84,745 during the past eight months of the year, whilst visitor numbers from the UK saw an increase of 10.5 per cent to reach 83,089 during the period.

Maldives has welcomed over a million tourists this year, as the destination attempts to reach an ambitious target of 1.5 million visitors over the next three months.

The one millionth visitor of the year arrived in the Maldives on August 2 — a month ahead of last year. In 2018, the one millionth mark was reached on September 9, whilst it was celebrated in October the previous year.

Maldives welcomed a record 1.4 million tourists in 2018. It was a 6.8 per cent increase from the 1,389,542 tourists that chose to holiday in the Maldives in 2017.

Meanwhile, government has revised its forecast for the number of tourists visiting the island nation this year, increasing the estimate to a record 1.6 million from 1.5 million.

This positive growth in the tourism industry comes amidst concerns by private organisations representing industry stakeholders such as the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) over the lack of effort and budget to promote the Maldives as a destination.

These concerns come as the world-famous holiday destination struggles to match an increased bed capacity.

Over the past few years, dozens of uninhabited islands have been leased to local and foreign resort developers. Several international brands have entered into the market, increasing the number of resorts to more than 130. That number is set to increase as another 20 resorts are expected to open over the next two years.

Along with the new resort openings come the challenge of increasing demand from budget travellers who choose guesthouses over luxury resorts that the Maldives is known for. The guesthouse sector has rapidly expanded with over 500 guesthouses in operation today.

The previous government announced steps to maintain a structured growth in tourism, including a slowdown in leasing islands for resort development and increased marketing efforts in key markets such as China and the Middle East in order to reach an ambitious target of a record 1.5 million tourist arrivals this year.

Meanwhile, the new government has pledged to ramp up tourism promotion.

Reflecting the new government’s pledge, the state budget for 2019 includes MVR 104,200,000 (USD 6.7 million) for tourism promotion, up from MVR 34,733,333 (USD 2.2 million) this year and the previous year.
