Kandolhu Maldives welcomes new dive team

Kandolhu Maldives has welcomed a new dive team, Rita and Leo.

“If they’re not underwater, you can find them at Noovilu Sports, ready to take you diving and to explore the beautiful underwater world that surrounds us! Don’t hesitate to stop by and say hello and learn more about the amazing experiences available to you today,” the resort said, in an announcement.

After spending too long as a lab geek studying biomedicine, Rita decided it was enough and that the time to live the real life had come. Now, she enjoys most of her days with her fish friends and other marine creatures. She has always loved travelling and she likes social interactions with different cultures. Amongst other things, she is so in love with the ocean that she got her local skipper licence without even driving a boat! She is so comfortable underwater that her colleagues at Kandolhu call her, “The sea chameleon”. Seeing a manta ray makes her so happy that she can even change colour!

A lover of sports both in the water and snow, Leo likes “sensations” as he always says. So, bring him diving in ripping current (even without fins, which happens when he forgets them in the dive centre!) and he will be the happiest man on earth! Besides being a scuba diving instructor since 2015, he is also a rafting, climbing, snowboard, and sail instructor with the French Federation. Very social, Leo loves speaking to people and telling them about his experiences.

Ringed by an intricate yet stunning coral garden teeming with colourful reef fish, Kandolhu is a patch of paradise hidden in the North Ari Atoll and accessible by a 25-minute scenic seaplane flight. A member of the Small Luxury Hotels, Kandolhu is cleverly arranged to offer maximum privacy yet all within the space of only 200 square metres. The resort offers just 30 villas in five different styles — Jacuzzi Beach Villas, Pool Villas, Duplex Pool Villas, Ocean Villas and Ocean Pool Villas — that feature local architecture with modern interiors.

Kandolhu is home to five gourmet restaurants, boasting the highest restaurant-to-room ratio in the Maldives. The ambience and menu of each restaurant varies greatly: be entertained with a live show in Banzai, the Japanese teppanyaki, delight in an array of fresh seafood on offer in Sea Grill, sit back and gaze at the sparkling Indian Ocean from the Market or enjoy a romantic candlelit dinner in Olive with modern Mediterranean dishes on the card.

The intimate island resort has a spa, and offers a range of recreational activities, including diving, snorkelling, water sports and excursions.

Alternatively, guests can enjoy some time away from it all in their private water or beach villa, on a secluded beach or while enjoying a pampering spa treatment.

Dhigali Maldives has enhanced the offerings at its Play kids’ club.

The kids’ club now features educational games and toys to keep kids engaged in a more interactive way without involving any technology, allowing children to de-programme from their daily life. Children can also participate in a series of daily activities, where each day has a different theme.

“Dhigali kids club, Play will take good care of our 4 to 12-year-old guests, providing them with exciting activities to keep them occupied. Play kids club is a ‘little world’ of knowledge and entertainment, where everyday day is an adventure of learning,” an announcement by the resort read.

Dhigali sits in the remote Raa atoll and can be reached by a scenic seaplane journey of just 45 minutes from the main Velana International Airport. Alternatively, guests can take a domestic flight to either Ifuru or Dharavandhoo airport, followed by a speedboat ride to the resort — a journey of about 70 minutes.

The island itself is corralled by 20 Beach Bungalows and 33 Deluxe Beach Bungalows to the south, and 62 Beach Villas which line the north and southwestern beaches. Nestled under a canopy of palms, these beach front sanctuaries provide luxurious intimacy, effortlessly marrying the interior and exterior. Outside, guests can spend their days relaxing in the private deck’s day-bed or opt for one of the 21 Beach Villas with Pool which include a private plunge pool overlooking the sparkling Indian Ocean.

Dhigali’s overwater bungalows dot the island’s azure perimeter. Extending from the southeastern side of the island is a jetty hosting 24 Water Villas, each one rising out of the lagoon on stilts. Similarly, from the southeast of the island snakes a further jetty housing 16 larger Lagoon Villas with Pools.

The singular Dhigali Suite is the pride of the island, featuring an opulent master bedroom, open-air bathroom, beachfront infinity pool and wide sundeck. With sublime ocean views and intuitive luxuries, the Dhigali Suite comes with its own bar and personal butler service, offering pure tropical peace.

Dining experiences at Dhigali are innovative and authentic, with the style and atmosphere of each restaurant reflecting the cuisine. There is a particular focus on fresh Asian dishes, including the specialist Asian restaurant Battuta. Capers is the main restaurant, whilst there is also an upscale Deli, all-day dining at Jade, and freshly grilled meats and fish at Faru. At sunset, guests can make their own way to the upper level of Haali sunset bar with a cocktail in hand.

The Dhigali Spa is a green retreat in the middle of the island, featuring daybeds, an outdoor pool and 12 modern, minimalist treatment rooms that cocoon guests in absolute stillness. Therapies offered by the spa draw on indigenous traditions to heal and reenergise the body and mind, while guests have the opportunity to prolong their visit in the steam room and relaxation lounge, or pamper with a pedicure and a manicure.

In addition to PADI-certified diving, snorkelling and a range of water sports, Dhigali offers island hopping adventures to nearby islands to explore local culture. Access to the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Hanifaru Bay in the nearby Baa atoll is available, allowing guests to discover the largest seasonal groupings of manta rays, a variety of stunning corals and huge schools of tropical marine life, as well as the opportunity to spot whale sharks.

Leading local hotel group Sun Siyam Resorts has won multiple accolades at the 2019 World Luxury Spa and Restaurant Awards.

In a glitzy affair at The State Hermitage Museum Official Hotel in St. Petersburg, Russia on July 6, The Sun Siyam Iru Fushi Maldives was announced the continent level winner in the category of ‘Luxury Beach Resort Spa’.

Sinbad at The Sun Siyam Iru Fushi was also named the leading ‘Mediterranean Cuisine’ restaurant in Indian Ocean.

In addition to the entire island being a sanctuary of natural beauty, The Spa by Thalgo at The Sun Siyam Iru Fushi is an open immersion in organic earth and vibrant sea, the elements from which Ayurveda draws its centuries-old healing power.

All this takes place in a setting that mirrors the natural splendour of the island. Wood, stone, water and light — all the fundamental elements of the earth — come together in perfect harmony in the design of the spa’s 20 treatment rooms, which are complemented by hydrotherapy pools, steam rooms and saunas. Additionally, dedicated relaxation areas are designed as natural sanctuaries, allowing guests to take a moment before emerging renewed.

Planhotel Hospitality Group has reopened the island of Bathala under its Sandies Hotels & Resorts brand, as Sandies Bathala Maldives.

The Swiss hotel company had last year taken over Bathala from local hotel group AAA Hotels & Resorts, which had been operating it as a three-star resort since 2011.

The resort has been upgraded to four-star level after a reconstruction project, which saw the building of all-new overwater villas and major renovations to the beach villas. The resort now features a combination of 73 beach and overwater villas — all fresh and refreshingly simple; there are no TVs in the rooms to help you completely switch off.

Sandies Bathala brings a great-value all-inclusive option to the Ari Atoll. This small island is located along the north-eastern rim of the atoll, just a 15-minute scenic seaplane ride from Velana International Airport, and it has long been a popular spot with divers from all around the globe.

The house reef surrounding the island is stunning, with colourful fish, reef sharks and turtles regularly spotted. Head beyond the reef with the experienced PADI and SSI dive crew of the famous Warner Lau Diving Centre, or venture out on a snorkelling trip where you can stop on a desert island for lunch. Bathala also offers night snorkelling for a totally different perspective of the ocean and marine life. If you prefer a dip in the pool, then the infinity pool here is a great spot to cool off.

For dining, there’s the buffet-style Island Gallery – where all your meals are included – with fresh fish barbecue, live cooking stations and local dishes. The Beach Grill offers freshly caught seafood specialities and fresh lobster menus in a romantic setting on the beach. Guests can quench their thirst at the Island Bar, which is a great place to relax and unwind after exploring the magnificent marine life.

Sandies Hotels & Resorts, part of the Planhotel Hospitality Group, are all-inclusive resorts in exceptional locations, including Kenya and Zanzibar. The brand’s philosophy is to create a simple and friendly atmosphere whilst providing a high level of service.

Planhotel Hospitality Group already runs two resorts in the Maldives under its luxury all-inclusive brand, Diamonds Hotels & Resorts.

The two resorts of Diamonds Thudufushi and Athuruga are located in the magnificent South Ari Atoll, and are accessible by a 20-minute seaplane flight from the main airport. These are ideal resorts to discover the Maldives from a centre of excellence, where attention to detail will make your journey unforgettable.

The restaurant’s bathroom has a view let in through a floor-to-ceiling window that also allows in an abundance of natural light, making the space feel even larger.

This outdoor bathroom in the sprawling four-bedroom Villa 15 is surrounded by a tranquil water feature replete with stepping stones that take you to the outdoor shower. Although the bathtub is covered, guests can still experience showering with only the sky and forest canopy overhead. Verdant tropical vegetation brings nature even closer as guests can shower beneath the open sky.

Soneva Jani’s Three Bedroom Water Reserve is home to this wooden bathtub that takes pride of place on one of the balconies, offering bathers panoramic views of the turquoise lagoon. Just the place to watch the sunset with a glass of Champagne close by.

World-leading luxury resort operator Soneva runs two resorts in the Maldives, Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani.

In 1995, the award-winning luxury resort Soneva Fushi set the standard for all desert island barefoot luxury hideaways in the Maldives. Located in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Soneva Fushi pairs Robinson Crusoe fantasy with intelligent luxury.

Sixty-two private villas with their own stretch of beach are hidden among dense foliage within touching distance of a pristine coral reef. Intuitive service is provided by Mr./Ms. Friday butlers.

Highlights include the open-air Cinema Paradiso, counting Saturn’s rings in the high-tech Observatory, the home-made chocolate and ice cream rooms, five hundred wines to choose from, six different restaurants and countless destination dining options. In November 2015, Soneva launched a floating villa concept, Soneva in Aqua, a treasure trove children’s Den and a multi-purpose facility encompasses a glass gallery, boutique and studio where guests can learn the art of glass blowing.

If the experiences are magical, the philosophy is simple: No news, no shoes. No pretensions either.

Opened in December 2016, Soneva Jani is Soneva’s newest property and the world-leading luxury hotel group’s second resort in the Maldives.

Soneva Jani is located on the island of Medhufaru within a 5.6 kilometre lagoon in the Noonu atoll, and has uninterrupted ocean views in all directions. The lagoon is 35 minutes by seaplane from Velana International Airport and one hour by speedboat from Soneva Fushi.

Meaning ‘wisdom’ in Sanskrit, Soneva Jani currently comprises 24 overwater villas and one island villa, with additional villas to be built in phase two. Five islands encircle the lagoon, each one with soft white sands and covered in rich tropical vegetation. Four of the five islands will remain untouched, making Soneva Jani the lowest density development in the Maldives. The overwater villas are spaced across the expansive lagoon, offering privacy and extensive views over the Maldives’ turquoise waters. The island villas will be tucked into the lush greenery, providing the ultimate privacy, and all within steps of the beach.

Soneva Jani’s main guest facilities are located at The Gathering, the heart of the overwater villas. This dramatic three story structure is home to the main dining outlets, in addition to the Soneva Spa, library, retail area and wine cellar. It is located next to the Maldives’ first overwater Observatory.

Velassaru Maldives has announced its decision to discontinue the use of plastic water bottles, replacing them with eco-friendly bottled water.

A new purpose built water filtration and bottling facility allows the resort to serve still and sparkling water in sustainable glass bottles. This initiative removes a minimum of 200,000 plastic bottles per year that will need either to be recycled or disposed of with a massive negative impact on the environment.

“We take great pride in our commitment to provide green and sustainable initiatives. Along with replacing plastic straw with edible straw, the implementation will not only reduce plastic bottle consumption and pollution from disposal but also reduce the costs and carbon emissions generated by transporting bottled water to the resort,” an announcement by the resort read.

Owned and operated by leading local hotel group Universal Resorts, Velassaru is located in South Male Atoll and accessible by a short 25-minute speedboat ride from the main Velana International Airport.

Velassaru offers luxurious beachfront and overwater accommodation with uninterrupted ocean views. Featuring wooden ceilings and floors for a tropical atmosphere, the contemporary-styled villas and bungalows offer chic serenity.

A wide variety of international specialities are offered at Velassaru’s five restaurants, including fresh contemporary seafood, Japanese, international and grill pan Indian options. The two beach bars serve cocktails and wines.

Guests can enjoy relaxing spa treatments in overwater pavilions, or hop on a Maldivian boat and watch the crew demonstrate traditional fishing methods. Other resort facilities include a fitness centre, tennis court and infinity pool with the view of the beach and the ocean.

Jason made his England debut as a substitute in 2001 against Italy, the same year he was chosen to for the 2001 British and Irish Lions tour of Australia. He was then appointed as England’s captain (the 118th captain) in 2005, in that same year Jason was called up to the Lions’ tour of New Zealand. He came out of international retirement in 2007 to play England’s summer friendlies and the 2007 Rugby World Cup. Jason’s last game for England came in the 2007 World Cup Final loss to South Africa, when he was forced to leave the field during the second half, due to an injury.

Already a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), Jason was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2008 New Year Honours. In March 2017, Robinson was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Lycamobile British Ethnic Diversity Sports Awards (BEDSAs).

Meanwhile, Soneva Kiri in Thailand will also host a renowned English rugby player during the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Austin Healey will be at Soneva’s resort in Thailand from October 20 to November 4.

Facilities on the island include the overwater Cinema Paradiso, the Eco Centro Waste-to-Wealth centre, organic gardens, tennis courts, water sports champa and Zuhair’s Beach on a desert island in the lagoon.

Dhigali Maldives has introduced a new modern Asian fusion dinner menu at its Jade restaurant.

The new menu features an amazing selections of dishes that has its origins in Southeast Asia, with cuisines and flavours from major Asian cities that are known for their unique taste. These dishes are prepared fresh by chefs with the same ethnic background and served in a breath-taking contemporary environment.

“As the sunsets, the restaurant transforms into a unique setting complementing a fusion of flavours from Asia. Enjoy a dining experience that is contemporary, simple and showcases the creativity of Dhigali Maldives,” an announcement by the resort read.

The all-day dining Jade restaurant at Dhigali is a welcoming hub ideal for quick snacks and light bites during the day. Here, guests can enjoy dining amidst cool breeze, glimmering waters and ocean views.

Singapore Airlines to deploy new 787-10 Dreamliner on Maldives service

Singapore Airlines has announced plans to deploy its new 787-10 Dreamliner on its Maldives service.

Singapore Airlines, consistently ranked as the world’s best airline, first flew to the Maldives in March 1984 with a weekly Singapore-Male service, whilst regional wing SilkAir launched four-times-weekly services in October 2015. Singapore Airlines and SilkAir currently operate a total of 16 weekly services to Male, offering convenient connections to other destinations in the SIA and SilkAir network.

From September 1, Singapore Airlines will swap its existing Airbus A330-300 jet with the new Dreamliner for its Singapore-Male service.

Singapore Airlines is the world’s first airline to operate the new B787-10 Dreamliner, the newest and longest member of the super-efficient 787 family. As a stretch of the 787-9, the 787-10 leverages the family’s proven technology, long range and preferred passenger experience, with unprecedented efficiency: 10 per cent better fuel and emissions than the best on offer by the competition and 25 per cent better than the airplanes it will replace.

The B787-10 Dreamliner operated by Singapore Airlines features fully-flat beds with direct aisle access for all regional Business Class customers, so they can rest in more comfort, even on the shortest flights. Economy travellers on the aircraft will be treated to ergonomically designed backrests contours and a six-way headrest for the perfect neck support.

This new Dreamliner service to the Maldives by Singapore Airlines follows the signing of an open skies agreement between the Maldives and Singapore last month. With the updated Air Services Agreement signed during Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s state visit to Singapore in June, airlines of the Maldives and Singapore will be able to operate as many passenger flights or cargo services as they want between and beyond both countries.

Despite a slight decline in tourist arrivals to the Maldives from Singapore last year, the number of Singaporean visitors has increased in the first five months of this year. Official figures show that 5,187 Singaporeans visited the Maldives during the January-May period — a 13.8 per cent increase over the same period last year.

Soneva has released its Festival of Colour’s summer programme that covers July and August.

Guests staying at Soneva Jani and Soneva Fushi in the Maldives are in for a treat with highlights including the Baa Atoll Summer Festival and the three Michelin-starred chef Kenji Gyoten returning to Soneva Fushi. Soneva Jani

Elliott Hasler is currently the UK’s youngest feature film director, having completed his first feature, Charlie’s Letters, aged 16 after a three-year production. Charlie’s Letters premiered in his hometown of Brighton, selling out six of the seven showings. The film was also screened at the Edinburgh Festival and was shown on the Brighton Big Screen alongside T2 Trainspotting and La La Land. His latest film, To Hunt A Tiger, is set in the British Raj and stars John Locke (Darkest Hour) and Charlotte Peters (Pound of Flesh). She is a yoga instructor, meditation leader, a Thai massage therapist, a practitioner of cupping techniques, and a specialist in reflexology and manual lymphatic drainage. Using the healing qualities of crystal singing bowls, her goal is to heal the body, mind and spirit, and to bring you into a deep state of awareness where you begin to remember the truth within. Each of her therapies results in the most powerful awakening and transformation.

Poland’s premium craft vodka, Vestal Vodka is changing the vodka game. CEO William Borrell creates vodkas with personalities and attitudes more akin to wines than spirits. Simon Difford, a British spirits guru, awarded an unprecedented 5+ (out of five) to Vestal’s 2010 vintage Kaszebe and 4.5 for both the 2009 and 2010 of the Podlasie. A 5+ is equivalent to a wine being awarded 100+ by Robert Parker. While at the resort from July 14-15, William will be hosting two six-course dinners by Chef Okabe at So Imaginative with vodka pairings, as well as complimentary sunset Soneva cocktails with a Vestal twist.

He spent eight months at the Jules Verne with Monsieur Reix before joining the kitchen team at Les Ambassadeurs, a gourmet restaurant at the Hôtel de Crillon.

Chef Kenji Gyoten opened his restaurant, Sushi Gyoten, at the age of 26. Sushi Gyoten received three Michelin stars in three consecutive years since 2014, making him the youngest three Michelin-starred chef in Japan. Award-winning Maldivian resorts, Hideaway Beach Resort & Spa and Lily Beach Resort & Spa have introduced a holistic wellness experience with natural Moringa-based products and new Ayurveda applications.

The Moringa tree (Moringa oleifera), also known as the ‘Tree of Life’, grows in the two island resorts of Hideaway Beach and Lily Beach. In these resorts, Moringa leaves sourced from homegrown trees are already used to make breakfast shakes that provide guests with the necessary energy boost needed for the entire day.

The plant, which has been known for centuries for its health-promoting properties, is rich in antioxidants, and provides the body with an excellent source of protein along with vitamins and minerals (iron, calcium and potassium). The tree is said to be able to cure up to 300 diseases, and fill up the body with energy and zest for life.

In addition to the breakfast shakes, guests at Hideaway Beach Resort and Lily Beach Resort can now enjoy ZIJA International‘s Moringa-based supplements.

The two luxury resorts of Hideaway Beach and Lily Beach offer three Moringa-based products from ZIJA. Plant Protein contains a complete protein extracted from Moringa leaves that helps to feed your body with maximum nutrition, whilst the XM + Energy Mix combines the nutrition of Moringa with natural energy and performance ingredients to kick-start your day naturally. The SuperMix provides the body with the daily dose of Moringa’s components: vitamins, minerals, proteins, antioxidants and omega oils.

Unlike other Moringa- based products, ZIJA uses all the beneficial components of the plant in its own blends, and guarantees high-quality, nutritionally-laden products. ZIJA ensures that the Moringa leaves used in their products are sourced from trees that are grown without chemicals, and are carefully harvested by hand and dried in the shade.

At Lily Beach Resort, the Moringa-based products are available at Lily Maa, Tamarind, Vibes, Aqua and Tamara Spa. Hideaway Spa, Meeru Bar and Sports Complex offer the products at Hideaway Beach Resort. However, the products are not included in the resorts’ all-inclusive packages.

Ayurveda treatments are also a new offering at the award-winning Hideaway Beach Resort.

The resort offers the Abhyanga massage, which includes a head and body massage, the Kerala massage, which focuses on the vital and energy points in the body, and the Shirodara treatment, which consists of a gentle, continuous forehead-oil casting. These traditional applications help to harmonise the essential forces of the body, strengthening both the body and mind alike whilst ensuring holistic wellbeing.

Lily Beach Resort will soon introduce Ayurvedic treatments as well.

“With the new health therapies and products, the resorts have recognised that more and more people are keen to do something good for their bodies and their minds, even when on vacation, to return to their everyday lives, recovered and rehabilitated. Lily Beach and Hideaway Beach are committed to ensuring their guests interpret the resorts as oases of peace and health, and therefore strive to offer the best treatments and products for holistic renewal,” an announcement by the resorts read.

“So one thing is certain: If you book the Hideaway Beach Resort & Spa and the Lily Beach Resort & Spa, you are guaranteed a luxurious pampering holiday with complete relaxation and holistic animation of body and soul.”

Hideaway Beach Resort is located on the crescent-shaped island of Dhonakulhi in the northernmost Haa Alif atoll of the Maldives, 290km from capital Male. Characteristic features are unique quietness, comfort and privacy in a 297,000sqm tropical setting.

A total of 103 spacious villas in 10 categories are situated at a great distance from each other, either amongst evergreen tropical vegetation or above the turquoise blue lagoon. A personal butler is available in almost all villa categories and fulfils all guest wishes.  The resort’s culinary diversity is reflected in four restaurants and bars.

With a paradisiacal house reef to be explored directly from the beach, Hideaway Beach Resort is the only hotel in the Maldives with a fully equipped harbour. It also offers the largest rum and whiskey menu in the Maldives, and is home to The Spa at Hideaway Maldives, diving school Meridis Dive & Relax, and a professionally supervised Kids Club.

The five-star Lily Beach Resort is located on the 600-metre-long and 110-metre-wide island of Huvahendhoo in South Ari Atoll.

With its Platinum Plan, which includes far more than the traditional package of cocktails, premium brands, champagne and international culinary delights, Lily Beach offers luxury all-inclusive holidays at the highest level. These include two excursions, which can be selected from a wide range of activities, including sunset fishing, snorkelling trips or a visit to a local island.

At your disposal are 125 luxurious villas in five categories. Add to this, the Tamara Spa, Prodivers Diving School, a specialty and main restaurant featuring fine dining, three bars, a shisha lounge, Turtles Kids’ Club, and one of South Ari Atoll’s best house reefs. Guests can also enjoy a diverse entertainment programme with live music and DJs, traditional cultural performances, fish feeding and much more.

Readers rated islands according to their activities and sights, natural attractions and beaches, food, friendliness, and overall value.

A fan of Maldives that responded to the survey gushed over “crystal water with white-sand beaches and very, very friendly locals.”

The World’s Best is a travel awards programme run by Travel + Leisure and based on an annual reader survey. The 2019 survey was open at tlworldsbest.com from November 6, 2018 to March 4, 2019.
