A newly developed runway at the Maldives’ main airport welcomed its maiden flight on Tuesday, as an Etihad Airways A380 jet made history with the first ever landing of the world’s largest passenger airliner in the island nation.

Piloted by Ali Ahsan, one of the few Maldivian pilots working in an international airline, the A380 jet made a successful landing at the new code-F runway around 4pm after a show flight around Maldives capital Male at an altitude of 1,000 to 1,500 feet.

The historic flight was greeted with a water salute, followed by a para-jumping session by the armed forces and a joint airshow by flagship carrier Maldivian and world’s largest seaplane operator Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA).

The A380 from Abu Dhabi was carrying the Maldives national football team, the recently crowned SAFF Suzuki Cup champions.

Prior to landing, the official permission for the A380 to land was granted by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom who attended a special ceremony to welcome the team, which beat India to become the champions of South Asian football.

The new 3,400 metre by 60 metre runway is funded by a USD 400 million loan from China EXIM Bank, with designing and construction handed over to Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG) of China. The runway is built on land reclaimed from the lagoon of the airport island of Hulhule.

The new runway, which can accommodate world’s largest passenger airliner Airbus A380, will begin welcoming scheduled flights later this year.

The new runway is part of a USD800 million mega project to expand and upgrade the Maldives’ main gateway to cater to at least seven million passengers per annum. The project also involves building a brand new passenger terminal, a seaplane terminal and other support facilities, including a fuel farm that can store 45 million litres and a 120,000 tonne cargo facility.

The airport is a key infrastructure that supports the Maldives multi-billion dollar tourism industry. Expansion of the airport is expected to boost tourist arrivals to the island nation as it aims to attract at least two million tourists by 2020.

Mirihi Island Resort is inviting guests to enjoy exhilarating days out swimming with one of the most impressive and elusive species in the world, the majestic manta ray.

Guests of all ages can dive into this once-in-a-lifetime experience and embark on a Manta Ray Safari off the South Ari Atoll in the Maldives, organised by the boutique hotel.

Guided by a team of local experts who know the waters like the back of their hand, guests will be taken day sailing aboard a traditional Maldivian Dhoni boat or a beautiful 55ft pine-wood yacht in search of these mysterious creatures of the deep.

Manta rays, though daunting in terms of size with a wing span of up to 12 feet across, are harmless to humans, feeding mainly on plankton and small organisms. Unlike their close relative the stingray, the manta ray has no tail stinger or barb and is one of the friendliest creatures in the sea.

If lucky enough to spot the Maldives’ largest sea inhabitant, guests are encouraged to jump into the water and snorkel alongside these gentle giants. Often appearing inquisitive in nature, the rays are known to majestically swoop over and around swimmers, at times coming thrillingly close; a breath-taking and humbling experience.

When not swimming with the manta rays, guests can enjoy intermittent stints of snorkelling where they can spot turtles, dolphins and whale sharks that flit and soar beneath. After an energetic morning keeping up with all manner of marine life guests can retire aboard the luxurious yacht or Dhoni and return to the island to indulge in a lavish lunch.

“We are delighted to unveil a new adventure for guests of Mirihi Island,” Mohammed Shareef, the island resort’s General Manager, was quoted in a statement, as saying.

“Spotting and swimming with manta rays is one of the most exhilarating experiences one can have in the Maldives, and this new excursion is sure to create memories travellers will treasure forever.”

Manta Ray Safaris at Mirihi Island take place from 9.30am until 3pm. Prices start from USD 115 (approximately £89) per person (excluding lunch) for a trip on a traditional Maldivian Dhoni boat or USD 160 (approximately £124) per person (excluding lunch) on the Mirihi Thari yacht, based on 10 guests sharing the excursion. Prices are subject to 10 percent service charge and 12 percent GST.

Located in the South Ari Atoll, Mirihi Island is an intimate resort with only 37 rooms, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere with friendly staff. Guests will immediately feel at ease in the safe and beautiful environment. With sand covered floors throughout much of the hotel, guests can relax upon arrival where they will be encouraged to abandon their shoes and enjoy their stay barefoot with the powder-soft sand between their toes.

Travellers looking to socialise and meet like-minded people can book sunset sailing trips, whale shark safaris, diving trips, visits to local islands, sessions tasting the most comprehensive selection of fine rum in the whole of the Indian Ocean, and can enjoy complimentary weekly beach cinemas, board games, table tennis, football and more.

Alternatively, guests can enjoy some time away from it all in their private water or beach villa, on a secluded beach or while enjoying a pampering spa treatment.

New F&B complex at Maldives main airport opens with intl fast food outlets

A new F&B complex at Maldives main Velana International Airport opened on Wednesday with several outlets of popular international fast food brands.

At a special ceremony held at the airport Wednesday afternoon, economic minister Mohamed Saeed inaugurated the new waterfront F&B complex, which houses outlets of KFC, Pizza Hut, Costa Coffee and Harvest Market.

Adil Moosa, the Managing Director of state owned airport operator Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), told attendees that current space limitations would not allow more brands to open their outlets at the airport. However, the brand new passenger terminal being developed at the airport would provide more space for additional F&B outlets, he added.

“We can’t match the demand at present,” Adil said.

MACL had signed an agreement early this year with global restaurateur HMSHost International to set up four international franchises, including KFC, Pizza Hut, Costa Coffee and Harvest Market at the airport.

These outlets are located in the new 14,000 square foot F&B complex, built using a prefabricated steel structure. The structure for the two-storey building was brought in from China, and was assembled by a Singaporean contractor.

Velana International Airport already features a number of international fast food franchises, including Burger King, The Coffee Club, Thai Express, The Pizza Company and Dairy Queen. The outlets are managed by Thailand-based Minor International, which also operates five resorts in the Maldives.

Apart from these additions and minor improvements, a separate USD 800 million mega project has been launched to expand and upgrade the airport. The project involves building a brand new runwayan international passenger terminal and a seaplane terminal as well as other support facilities, including a fuel farm that can store 45 million litres and a 120,000 tonne cargo facility.

The airport is a key infrastructure that supports the Maldives multi-billion dollar tourism industry. Expansion of the airport is expected to boost tourist arrivals to the island nation as it aims to attract at least two million tourists by 2020.

Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) has opened registration for a Destination Showcase event in London in November.

MATATO said it had signed up as a gold partner of the Travel Weekly Destination Showcase, set to be held at the Le Meridian Piccadilly in central London on November 7.

According to MATATO, up to seven partners will be allowed to participate in the event along with MATATO officials. The partners will have access to more than 150 travel agents, and have their logos featured on Aspire, an exclusive membership club for the sellers of luxury travel, it said.

Completed registration forms can be submitted before October 11. Registration costs USD 1,500, and includes counter space along with one exhibitor badge. Each additional participant has to pay an extra USD 200.

Set to take place right after the World Travel Market (WTM) London, the Destination Showcase is organised by Travel Weekly, the most successful B2B travel trade title in the UK, in association with European Tourism Association (ETA) and European Cities Marketing (ECM).

Each participating tourism office or supplier will have a dedicated stand space from which to showcase their destination, where they will meet face-to-face with the front line travel agents in order to gain insights on the UK travel industry, to promote their destination as well as launch booking incentives to drive bookings. This showcase will allow delegates to move freely between exhibitors in a relaxed and informal way where they will be rewarded according to the number of exhibitors they engage with.

Alongside the event, Travel Weekly produces a Destination Supplement, which is distributed at the event and with Travel Weekly to over 15,000 agents.

Europe is the single biggest source market for the Maldives tourism industry with a share of over 50 percent of total arrivals. According to official figures, the European marked observed an year on year increase of 15.9 percent in the first half of this year, with arrivals increasing to 419,991 from 362,354.

Britain is a major European source market, as more than 100,000 British travellers visited the Maldives last year — a 2.1 percent increase from the year before. That growth has continued this year, as 65,956 Brits visited the Maldives in the first six months of the year — an 11 percent increase from the 59,442 in the same period of last year.

New airport in Maldives north welcomes maiden flight

A domestic airport being developed in a key population centre in the northern part of Maldives welcomed its maiden flight on Wednesday.

A test flight operated by flagship carrier Maldivian left the main Velana International Airport at 2.20pm and landed at the airport being built on the island of Kulhudhuffushi in Haa Dhaal atoll at 3.10pm with several dignitaries onboard, including tourism minister Moosa Zameer and top aviation officials.

Six hectares off the southern coast of Kulhudhuffushi and another nine hectares from the island’s wetlands were reclaimed for the airport.

Construction of a runway measuring 1,200 metres in length and 60 metres in width completed early this week. However, the terminal and other support facilities are yet to be built.

Known as the “Heart of the North”, Kulhudhuffushi is the economic capital of the northern Maldives and has a population of over 9,000, making it one of the biggest and most populous islands in the northern part of the country. The island is famous for its mangroves (kulhi), after which the island itself is named.

Up until recently, Haa Dhaal remained as the only atoll in the Maldives which did not have a tourist resort. That changed in March when Hondaafushi Island Resort became the first resort to open in the atoll.

However, plans to develop a resort on the island of Naagoashi in the atoll have stalled.

The new airport is expected to facilitate the development of tourist resorts as well as guesthouses in the region.

Over a million tourists from across the globe visit the Indian Ocean island nation every year to holiday in one of the 120 resorts and 400 plus guesthouses located in all corners of the country. The multi-billion dollar tourism industry, which is the country’s main economic activity, relies heavily on the domestic transport infrastructure, especially air travel.

Maldives, the most dispersed country on the planet with 1,192 islands spread over roughly 90,000 square kilometres, already has 11 airports, including three international airports. The government has contracted both local and international companies to develop additional domestic airports across the archipelago in a bid to boost tourism.

Government on Wednesday announced plans to develop a 500-room city hotel in the southern atoll of Fuvahmulah.

Tourism minister Moosa Zameer told reporters that the integrated tourism project in Fuvahmulah will commence in six months, after the completion of a similar project to develop 60 guesthouses in the island of Kaashidhoo in Kaafu atoll.

The minister said that the project worth MVR 400 million (USD 25 million) will be financed through foreign loan aid. The city hotel will be developed in 20 blocks, with a separate convention centre accompanying the development, he added.

“Fuvahmulah has so many unique geographical characteristics like a diving spot just for tiger sharks. We can carry out this project in such a way that the natural beauty of the island’s wetlands and mangroves as well as the lifestyle of the people can be showcased to visitors,” the minister said.

“We receive complaints about the limited air connectivity to Fuvahmulah. But with this project, we will be able to develop at least 1,000 beds in the city and increase flight frequency.”

Being the only one-island atoll and the third largest natural island in the Maldives, Fuvahmulah features a diverse range of habitats, ranging from tropical woodlands and wetlands to freshwater lakes, well-vegetated marshland areas, white sandy beaches of different variations and pebble texture plus gravel beaches and fertile lands of humus greater in area than any other island in the Maldives. Two freshwater lakes in the island plus the many number of swamps and marshland areas in the island give habitat to different plant and animal species not to be found anywhere else in the Maldives.

A nature park developed to promote eco-tourism has recently opened in Fuvahmulah. Visitor centres and boardwalks have been built in Fuvuhmulah’s Eydhigali Kilhi, offering tourists access to the aesthetic beauty of the wetlands and various plants previously hidden from view.

However, the island lacks proper facilities for tourism, except a domestic airport. Only a handful guesthouses provide accommodation to visitors.

Chinese firm to build airport in Maldives’ Lhaviyani tourist hotspot

A contract has been awarded to Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG) to construct a domestic airport in the tourist hotspot of Lhaviyani atoll.

At a ceremony held at Hurawalhi Maldives resort’s 5.8 Undersea restaurant last Monday, Kuredu Holdings director Mohamed Moosa and BUCG’s International President Li Dausan signed the agreement to construct the airport.

Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Moosa, who is amongst the leading businessmen in the country, said BUCG was awarded the project because of its technical capacity and experience in the Maldives, especially in building a new runway at the Maldives main Velana International Airport. Construction is expected to finish in eight months, with the airport being operational by next June, he added.

Government had in May awarded a contract to leading resort operator Kuredu Holdings to develop the airport on the island of Madivaru, which had previously been used for military training.

Kuredu Holdings will invest USD 13 million to develop and bring the airport to operation in a year. The project involves reclaiming some three hectares of land from the lagoon of Madivaru, building a 1.2-kilometre runway, and a training academy for aviation officials from flagship carrier Maldivian and seaplane operator Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA).

The company can develop a city hotel to incentivise the airport operation.

Kuredu Holdings developed Kuredu island as a tourist resort in 1995-1996, and assisted sister company Komandoo Holdings Pvt Ltd to develop Komandoo island as a resort in 1997-1998. Kuredu Holdings owns and operate hotel resorts in the Maldives, and is currently developing several new resorts.

Lhaviyani atoll has one of the highest concentrations of tourism activity in the Maldives, with eight resorts including Kuredu Resort Maldives, Komandoo Island Resort and Spa, Hurawalhi Maldives, Palm Beach Island Maldives Resort and Spa, Atmosphere Kanifushi, Kanuhura Maldives, Fushifaru Maldives and Cocoon Maldives already in operation. Several new islands in the atoll are being developed as resorts, including the soon to be launched Kudadoo Maldives Private Island by Hurawalhi.

The government has contracted both local and international companies to develop additional domestic airports across the archipelago in a bid to boost tourism.

Maldives elects new president, tourism stakeholders pledge support

Maldives on Sunday elected a new president as stakeholders in the tourism industry welcomed the incoming administration.

In an election that saw an all-time high voter turnout of 89 percent, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih from an alliance of opposition parties secured a decisive victory over incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom with 58.4 percent of votes.

The Maldives electoral body confirmed the results Monday morning.

After meeting President-Elect Solih at the President’s Office Monday morning, President Yameen addressed the nation and ensured a peaceful transfer of power. He noted that he would continue to serve until the end of the his term, which expires on November 17.

President-Elect Solih, meanwhile, urged national unity and pledged to work for the betterment of Maldives.

“Regardless of who you voted for, I will be the president of all Maldivians,” he said, at a press conference late Monday evening claiming his victory.

The election results have been met with praise, with tourism organisations welcoming the president-elect and Vice President-Elect Faisal Naseem, an industry veteran who had worked at top posts in resorts in his career.

Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) said it hoped Maldives would attain new heights under Solih’s leadership. The association, which comprises Maldives tourism pioneers such as Mohamed Umar Maniku and Hussain ‘Champa’ Afeef, also pledged to work with the incoming administration.

Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) and Association of Travel Agents (ATA) Maldives, the two organisations representing local travel agents and tour operators, congratulated President-Elect Solih and Vice President-Elect Naseem.

“Please know that you can count on our best wishes and support as you assume the duties of the President. We look forward to working with your administration, and may you and all those who serve with you be granted with wisdom and strength to take this country forward,” MATATO said, in a statement.

Guesthouse Association of Maldives (GAM) President Ahmed Akram expressed hope that the relatively new local tourism industry would flourish under the new government. He noted that the joint opposition’s manifesto already includes several aspects specific to the guesthouse industry.

“We met him during the campaign and requested him to create a special division within the tourism ministry to facilitate and promote guesthouses,” Akram told Avas Online.

The joint opposition has proposed to triple the tourism promotion budget, which is currently set at MVR 50 million (USD 3.3 million) every year.

The government has come under fire from private organisations representing industry stakeholders such as MATATO over the lack of effort and budget to promote the Maldives as a destination.

These concerns come as the world-famous holiday destination struggles to match an increased bed capacity.

Over the past five years, dozens of uninhabited islands have been leased to local and foreign resort developers. Several international brands have entered into the market, increasing the number of resorts to 130. That number is set to increase as the government has announced the opening of some 20 new resorts over the next two years.

Along with the new resort openings come the challenge of increasing demand from budget travellers who choose guesthouses over luxury resorts that the Maldives is known for. The guesthouse sector has rapidly expanded with over 500 guesthouses in operation today.

The government has recently announced new steps to maintain a structured growth in tourism, including a slowdown in leasing islands for resort development and increased marketing efforts in key markets such as China and the Middle East in order to reach an ambitious target of a record 1.5 million tourist arrivals this year.
