Leeli Lounge at the Maldives main Velana International Airport has been named the Leading Airport Lounge in South Asia.

Officials from the state airport operator Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) received the visitors’ choice award at the South Asian Travel Awards (SATA) 2018 gala held at The Taj Mahal Palace hotel in Mumbai on September 15.

Located on the first floor departure terminal, opposite to the duty free area, Leeli Lounge offers a great scenic view of the airport. It pampers travellers with comfortable seating in a classy, relaxing atmosphere while serving an international selection of food and beverages.

Launched in 2016 by Maldives based event management company Highrise, SATA has been endorsed by regional tourism authorities and organisations, including the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Sri Lanka (FCCISL), Colombo Chamber of Commerce (CCC), Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO), Confederation of Associated Tour Operators (India), Association of Travel Agents (ATA) Maldives, Association of Travel and Tour Operators India (ATTOI), Association of Professionals in Tourism (APT, India), Kerala Hotel General Managers Club (KHGMC), Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and Liveaboard Association of Maldives (LAM).

SATA is the first ever regional travel awards endorsed by multi national associations, providing the tourism sector of the South Asian region with recognition towards their facilities and service excellence. It aims to encourage and raise service standards in the region’s tourism industry.

A record 500 plus nominations from the Maldives, India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Nepal were received for the 36 categories in 10 segments included in this year’s edition of SATA.

This year’s evaluation process was carried out in the most vibrant cities in each country: Maldives capital Male, Sri Lankan capital Colombo, south Indian city of Bangalore, Indian capital New Delhi, Nepalese capital Kathmandu, and the Bhutanese town of Paro. The evaluation was carried out by an all-women jury, which comprised Amal Goonetilleke from Sri Lanka, Rinku Madan from India and Hinna Khalid from Maldives.

Maldives posts 2.2 percent hike in tourist arrivals in August

Maldives on Tuesday reported an increase of 2.2 percent in tourist arrivals in August.

Official figures for the month of August released by the tourism ministry show that a total of 123,992 tourists visited the Maldives during the month — a 2.2 percent increase over the 121,310 tourists in August 2017.

Europe, the largest regional source market, posted an overall growth of 10.6 percent over August 2017, as arrivals increased to 52,488 from 47,465.

The UK, which is the single biggest European source market, made a gain of eight percent, while several other major European markets such as Italy, France and Spain also posted gains of 21.4 percent, 0.7 percent and 33.3 percent respectively. However, arrivals from Germany declined by 7.7 percent — the second decline this year (down 23.3 percent in June) from the second largest European source market.

Russian travellers continued to show their appetite for the Maldives, as arrival numbers jumped 8.6 percent in August to reach 4,525 from 4,166 in August 2017. This strong performance last month translated into an impressive growth of 21.5 percent in arrivals from Russia in the past eight months of the year.

Arrivals from Asia, the second largest regional source market, decreased by 3.5 in August.

However, the double digit decline in the Chinese market for the past two years slowed down in August as arrivals decreased by only 0.8 percent to reach 33,472 from 33,743 in August 2017. This performance narrowed the decline in arrivals from the Maldives’ single biggest source market for the January-August period to 7.4 percent.

Almost all major contributors to Maldives tourism from South East Asia, which has been post strong gains over the past year, recorded declines in August, with arrivals from countries such as Malaysia, Thailand and Philippines decreasing by 13.7 percent, 8.7 percent and 12 percent respectively. However, arrivals from Singapore, which had been posting weak performances for the past eights months of year, increased by 17.6 percent — the second consecutive month of positive growth.

South Asia, which has become one of the fastest growing source markets, also extended its decline for the second consecutive month after posting major gains for the past seven months of the year. The latest decline of 27.5 percent is due to negative growth in arrivals from almost all South Asian markets, including India (down 28.6 percent) and Sri Lanka (down 29 percent).

Along with the mixed performance in established markets, growth in relatively new markets such as the Americas also turned negative for the first time in several months.

Arrivals from the US decreased by 2.4 percent in August — the first decline since securing a place amongst the top 10 contributors to the Maldives tourism industry last year. However, the number of visitors from Australia and South Africa, which has been on the recovery, increased by 40.4 percent and 0.2 percent, respectively.

Middle East, which has proven to be a volatile market, posted a decline of 1.7 percent in August after recording slight gains for the past two months, as arrivals from several major Middle Eastern countries, including Kuwait, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates posted negative growth of 4.7 percent, 20.7 percent and 23.6 percent, respectively. However, Saudi Arabia (up 6.6 percent) and Qatar (up 305.9 percent) were the only major contributors from Middle East that made gains in arrivals in August.

According to the August statistics, total arrivals for the past eight months of the year increased by 9.1 percent to reach 972,839 compared to the 892,025 in the same period of last year.

Maldives had early this month welcomed the one millionth visitor of 2018.

In addition to a new wave of recent political turmoil, the Maldives is currently experiencing the traditionally low season.

May to November is considered the low tourist season, as these months constitute rainy season in Maldives. Between May and November, the islands boast of wet weather, making it less ideal for tourists to travel and enjoy the tropical environment.

Over the past five years, dozens of uninhabited islands have been leased to local and foreign resort developers. Several international brands have entered into the market, increasing the number of resorts to 120. That number is set to increase as the government has announced the opening of some 20 new resorts over the next two years.

Along with the new resort openings come the challenge of increasing demand from budget travellers who choose guesthouses over luxury resorts that the Maldives is known for. The guesthouse sector has rapidly expanded with over 450 guesthouses in operation today.

The government last year announced new steps to maintain a structured growth in tourism, including a slowdown in leasing islands for resort development and increased marketing efforts in key markets such as China and the Middle East in order to reach an ambitious target of a record 1.5 million tourist arrivals this year.

Maldives has been showcased at IFTM Top Resa, the largest travel trade fair held in France.

Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) along with 34 industry partners are participating at the four-day fair being held from September 25-28. The Maldives delegation is headed by MMPRC’s Acting Managing Director Haris Mohamed.

Maldives stand, which is located at Pavilion 7 with other Asia Pacific countries, sports a colourful branding of the destination. Visitors have the opportunity to experience the natural beauty of the Maldives through VR Gears and taste some Maldivian snacks.

Meanwhile, the Maldives delegation is meeting with industry professionals to further develop and strengthen the presence of the destination within the French market. Meetings are being held with airlines, major tour operators and travel trade partners to pursue ways in which French arrivals to the Maldives can be increased over the coming years.

France is amongst the top markets to the Maldives. In 2017, a total of 42,365 tourist arrivals were recorded from France, which is an increase of 4.6 percent compared to 2016. As of July 2018, 32,403 French tourists have visited the Maldives this year — an increase of 23.9 percent compared to the same period of last year.

“With the French market booming in 2018, with almost 24 percent growth compared to same period in 2017, we are very confident that Top Resa 2018 edition will be a success. We have already received positive feedback from the French travel trade: the sales trends for the winter season are positive,” Haris said, in a statement.

IFTM Top Resa is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year with a new corporate identity. Since its inception in 1979 as a trade fair exclusively for the leisure travel industry, IFTM Top Resa has now expanded its scope to cover all segments of the travel trade: leisure, business, MICE and groups.

Velassaru Maldives has revamped its Turquoise restaurant.

Following a two-week refurbishment, the all-day dining restaurant now sports a fresh new look, created by Olive Garden Interior Design, the same team behind the resort’s Vela buffet restaurant and Fen Bar.

Choosing materials that resonate the resort’s brand identity, Turquoise is now a vibrant and modern all-day dining venue with a warm and airy atmosphere that feels like you have stepped into a chic garden. While the accent shiplap walls and the copper and resin lamps around the restaurant allow the design to blend in with both outlets, Interior Design Specialist Mei Kheng Leong designed the restaurant’s interior by bringing the outdoor and natural elements in.

“The revamped restaurant has kept its laid-back vibe and diners can still enjoy the uninterrupted views of the infinity pool from the expansive outdoor deck,” an announcement by the resort read.

Along with the refurbishment comes a new menu, which includes fabulous new burgers and revised dessert options.

Owned and operated by leading local hotel group Universal Resorts, Velassaru is located in South Male Atoll and accessible by a short 25-minute speedboat ride from the main Velana International Airport.

Velassaru offers luxurious beachfront and overwater accommodation with uninterrupted ocean views. Featuring wooden ceilings and floors for a tropical atmosphere, the contemporary-styled villas and bungalows offer chic serenity.

A wide variety of international specialities are offered at Velassaru’s five restaurants, including fresh contemporary seafood, Japanese, international and grill pan Indian options. The two beach bars serve cocktails and wines.

Guests can enjoy relaxing spa treatments in overwater pavilions, or hop on a Maldivian boat and watch the crew demonstrate traditional fishing methods. Other resort facilities include a fitness centre, tennis court and infinity pool with the view of the beach and the ocean.

However, according to the latest arrival figures, the double digit decline in the Chinese market for the past two years slowed down in August as arrivals decreased by only 0.8 percent to reach 33,472 from 33,743 in August 2017. Baros Maldives has recently undergone a major identity enhancement, introducing impressive changes in products and services.

Accommodation

A new category of accommodation has been added and branded as Baros Suites. These Baros Suites are private, stand-alone villas providing guests with a modern, luxurious living space, complete with a spectacular, 19 ft by 10 ft swimming pool, a separate hot and cold water jacuzzi and a secluded gazebo that features a swing with a view of the ocean stretching to the horizon.

In addition, existing Baros Water Villas, Baros Pool Villas and Baros Deluxe Villas have all been upgraded with new furniture, bright colours and high-quality materials to enhance guest comfort and improve each villa’s elegant style.

Dining

The Baros dining experiences are better than ever following new designs of the Sails Bar and lagoon-side Cayenne Restaurant.

Guests can amble along a sandy trail to Sails Bar for drinks or snacks in an intimate and peaceful place. They can sway in a hammock as the lagoon sparkles beyond the trees, or relax in a lounger as smooth music melts into the starlit sky.

Intimate dining over the lagoon, the aroma of spice drifting through the night, Cayenne Grill offers al fresco à la carte dining with a hint of Indian flavour. Cayenne Grill celebrates the grilling traditions of the world, accompanied by premium wines from across the globe.

Loyalty Programme

Baros has also refined its loyalty programme for returning guests, known as Baros Elite.

Elite membership now entitles guests to free nights, spa credits, complimentary dinners and other special discounts after just two seven-night holidays at Baros.

Reef Restoration

The restoration of the house reef to its natural, pristine glory has been advanced with a new project called Coral Lines. This uses a method that is environmentally sustainable and close to nature.

Fragments of coral are collected and attached to ropes hanging in the lagoon nursery which are then nurtured for one to three years before being planted directly on the reef. This hands-on method encourages the growth of corals in their natural habitat without any artificial structures.

Baros is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year and the legacy of this bijou island is carried forward throughout the enhancement and enrichment. In celebration of the Maldivian legacy, Baros is offering a special package through its website branded as Essence of Maldives.

Only the third resort to open in the Maldives (1973) and the first dive centre to open in the archipelago (1979), Baros is situated in the central southern part of North Male Atoll, just 25 minutes by speedboat from the international airport. It is surrounded by a beautiful house reef, only 15 to 30 metres from the shore, alive with colours, fish, turtles, rays and coral.

As a small leading luxury Maldives resort, Baros offers tastefully designed beach and water villas. With beach villas of classic elegance set in lush vegetation, and secluded water villas, — many with private pools — Baros is one of the most romantic resorts in the Maldives, the perfect honeymoon getaway.

Inspired by Maldivian traditions of heartfelt hospitality, Baros is a tropical island dream come true with fine cuisine and drinks served at three gourmet class restaurants, two bars, and a cigar and shisha lounge.

The spa at Baros is located in a beautiful, lush tropical garden where serenity saturates the atmosphere, and is accessed by over-water stepping stones. It is a tranquil haven where complete well-being in body, mind and soul is made possible.

The resort continues to set the benchmark for a romantic, luxury holiday with genuine, heartfelt Maldivian hospitality. It has received countless prestigious awards from guests and the travel industry and remains a pioneer in conservation in the Maldives.

Six Senses Laamu introduces shrimp-free menus to support sustainable seafood initiative

Sustainable shrimp is a very elusive catch. That was a significant element of a message from Callum Roberts, professor of Marine Conservation at the University of York, on his recent visit to Six Senses Laamu where he discussed sustainable fisheries management in Laamu atoll.

“They look innocuous and taste great, but shrimp and prawns are sadly some of the most environmentally-damaging seafoods you can eat,” says Professor Roberts.

“Bottom trawling with fine mesh nets for wild prawns causes habitat destruction and enormous losses of non-target species, many of which are threatened. In a worst case, prawn farms can destroy valuable wetlands and the animals are usually fed on wild fish caught using some of the most destructive fishing methods on the planet. Until there are truly sustainable alternatives available, there is no question that we should consider avoiding eating shrimp and prawns. Whether wild or farmed, they are produced at immense cost to the environment and other wildlife.”

As of September 2018, Six Senses Laamu will no longer serve shrimp or prawns in either its guest restaurants or staff canteen. This will amount to an annual reduction of around 13,227 pounds (6,000 kilograms) in shrimp and prawn purchases. This represents a small dent in the global demand, but a powerful statement in sustainability.

Stefan Goechke, Executive Chef at Six Senses Laamu, says he welcomes the challenge of adapting the resort’s menus so that guests won’t even notice the absence of prawns.

“My team is working on some exciting new dishes to delight our guests. We also have a variety of sustainable seafood options featured on the menu, such as fish caught by local fishermen right here in Laamu Atoll, that don’t carry the same environmental price tag,” says Stefan.

Professor Roberts has commended on the move, calling it, “Courageous and principled. It puts Six Senses Laamu firmly at the forefront of global efforts to achieve sustainability in seafood.”

Since 2016, Six Senses Laamu has partnered with Blue Marine Foundation, of which Professor Roberts is a trustee, to increase the sustainability of grouper fisheries in the Maldives. Blue Marine Foundation is now seeking to establish a locally managed marine protected area in Laamu atoll in consultation with government and community leaders. The goal is to protect areas important for the aggregation of spawning groupers and other vulnerable marine life.

Marteyne van Well, General Manager of Six Senses Laamu, says the resort very much welcomes advice such as this on marine conservation, while appreciating that these seafood items might be missed by some guests.

“We are constantly learning from visiting guests, practitioners and experts from the culinary world to wellness and marine science. The resort grows and evolves by absorbing the invaluable knowledge from our guests, which inspires us to keep improving. Our partnerships with international NGOs and their expertise are crucial to achieving our goals in sustainability and we hope to, in turn, be able to contribute and share knowledge to inspire others. Along the lines of James Keller’s quote, ‘a candle loses nothing by lighting another candle,’ we hope that sharing learnings for a sustainable future will outweigh the removal of shrimp and prawns on our menus,” says Marteyne.

Six Senses Laamu is the only resort located in the Laamu atoll, which lies in the southern part of the Maldives. Surrounded by the Indian Ocean, the resort prides itself on its commitment to sustainable operations and development as outlined by Agenda 21 and Green Globe Benchmarking.

At Six Senses Laamu, most of the villas and facilities are built overwater. However, beach villas and on-land dining is an option. All villas offer a sense of privacy and seclusion, with an amazing view to the Ocean and Maldivian nature.

Six Senses Laamu offers a wide range of dining options, with cuisines from around the world, a swimming pool with a sunken bar, an ice cream parlour, an overwater wine cellar and a signature Chill bar. Many activities, excursions and options are available for everyone to enjoy, both overwater and underwater, in addition to the Six Senses Spa.
