Jumeirah Vittaveli has been awarded with four trophies at the World Luxury Restaurants Awards and World Luxury Spa Awards 2017.

At the gala ceremony of World Luxury Restaurants Awards and World Luxury Spa Awards, which took place at the JW Marriott Hanoi hotel in Vietnam on July 22, Jumeirah Vittaveli’s Fenesse Restaurant received two accolades, while Swarna Restaurant and Talise Spa were each recognised with one award.

“This is an excellent recognition of the service provided by our teams at each venue”, Amit Majumder, General Manager of Jumeirah Vittaveli, was quoted in a statement as saying.

“We focus on improving our facilities and offerings from year to year, but our team is the core of everything we do and I am honoured to see our efforts recognised on a global stage. We live our values on a daily basis and take pride in succeeding in our aims – to ensure our guests create everlasting memories at Jumeirah Vittaveli.”

Setting the basis for service industry standards around the globe, the World Luxury Spa Awards and World Luxury Restaurant Awards pride themselves on providing true recognition to luxury spas and restaurants in their relevant categories during its annual voting phase. Votes are garnered through various marketing channels from guests, showcasing yet again the true value of service excellence.

Jumeirah Vittaveli repeated its success from last year’s awards with a renewed continental win for the Best Indian Cuisine in Indian Ocean for Swarna.

Swarna translates to ‘gold’ in Sanskrit, reflecting royalty and the rich heritage of Indian cuisine. The gold standard at Jumeirah Vittaveli, this impressive restaurant delights guests with creative flavours, complemented by an impressive arrangement of dishes. The restaurant comprises three open-air dining cabanas, one chef’s table, and a swing for after-dinner relaxation, all dotted throughout a Maharaja Style garden venue.

The spa is inspired by the meaning of the word ‘Vittaveli’ — vastness of space and eternal light — connecting the elements of light and space with the purity and vibration of its ingredients. These ingredients are hand-harvested by local communities using traditional farming methods to ensure healing life energy held in all living things will be honoured and handed down to guests through the unique products and treatments available at Talise Spa at Vittaveli. The spa also recently introduced Aerial Yoga and offers complimentary wellness and fitness sessions every day.

Thai developer kicks off ‘game-changing’ Maldives integrated resort project

Thailand-based developer Singha Estate inaugurated a project on Sunday to develop Emboodhoo Falhu lagoon as the first integrated resort in Maldives.

Singha Estate, the real estate development arm of well-known Asian brewery Boon Rawd Brewery, has secured a 50-year lease on Emboodhoo Falhu, which is one of the largest lagoons in the Maldives, and has announced plans to develop the entire area into the largest integrated resort in the Indian Ocean.

Nine artificial islands are being developed on land reclaimed from the lagoon, which is located very close to capital Male and the main Velana International Airport.

At a special ceremony held Sunday afternoon on the reclaimed land, tourism minister Moosa Zameer laid the foundation stone of the project. He was joined by some of his cabinet colleagues as well as lawmakers and top officials from Singha Estate, including its chairman Chutinant Bhirombhakdi.

Bhirombhakdi told attendees that the integrated resort would change the face of the Maldives’ tourism industry and give a significant boost to tourist arrivals. In addition to a collection of different resort and hotel brands to choose from, tourists would have access to a yacht marina, a beach club, lifestyle restaurants, and retail and duty free shops, he added.

“This is the first integrated resort being developed in the Maldives. This is a game-changing project that will elevate the Maldives’ position as one of the popular tourist destinations in the world,” Bhirombhakdi said.

According to the Singha Estate chief, the project will have several socio-economic and environmental benefits as well. Some 5,000 new jobs will be created, while sustainability initiatives and efforts to conserve marine life and local culture will also be carried out, he said.

“Environmental sustainability is at the core of all of our projects,” Bhirombhakdi said.

Tourism minister Zameer echoed the socio-economic benefits of the project, saying that it would change the face of the Maldives’ tourism industry. The project is also a testament to the trust and confidence large-scale investors and global financial institutions have in the Maldives’ economy, he added.

“Under President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s visionary leadership, the Maldives has become an investor-friendly country,” Zameer said.

First phase of the USD 311.5 million project consists of three islands, and is expected to be operational by July 2018. Singha Estate has earlier announced a partnership with world-renowned Hard Rock Hotels to manage the first phase. A separate contract has been signed with Cafe Del Mar to setup one of its world-famous beach clubs in the integrated facility.

In addition to the Hard Rock resort, the integrated facility will have more than seven other hotel brands to choose from, totalling the number of guest rooms to 1,300. A yacht marina, shopping promenade, over 20 food and beverage destinations, a centre devoted to local culture and marine life, conference halls, and wedding facilities will also be developed.

Singapore-based developer Pontiac Land Group has kicked off a similar integrated tourism development project in the Maldives.

The project involves developing the Rah Falhu lagoon, accessible by a 45-minute boat ride from capital Male, as an integrated resort. The integrated facility will consist of three luxury resorts managed by international hotel brands, a yacht marina and a tourism academy.

Over the past three years, dozens of uninhabited islands have been leased to local and foreign resort developers. Several international brands have entered into the market, increasing the number of resorts to 120. That number is set to increase as the government has announced the opening of some 20 new resorts by the end of this year.

Leading local luxury yacht specialist Floating Resort by Scubaspa has stepped up efforts to attract luxury travellers from the UK looking for active and well-being holidays.

The company’s business development manager Barty Olejniczak told TTG Media that Scubaspa has so far had a small figure of UK bookings, since its launch in 2014. However, the company wants to change that as it sees the UK market having significant growth potential, especially for active and well-being holidays, he added.

“The average stay has been seven nights. However, Scubaspa has just launched a range of shorter itineraries which are perfect for twinning with a resort in the Maldives or a destination such as Sri Lanka,” Olejniczak was quoted as saying.

Officials from Scubaspa visited UK agents last week following a series of initial meetings in May. The company, according to Olejniczak, plans to work with agents and operators in the luxury spectrum as well as specialist dive operators.

Scubaspa operates two 50-metre yachts, Ying and Yang, which can each cater for up to 40 guests in 19 suites, and aim to offer the sense of a private yacht experience. The company offers itineraries around the Maldives that are designed to cater for scuba divers with non-diving partners who are more interested in wellness with both yachts having extensive 300sqm onboard spas.

Scubaspa has a five-star PADI diving rating, while both yachts have their own 20-metre dive dhoni boats – 15 to 17 dives are included as standard per stay for guests.

Prices with Scubaspa start at USD 1990 (approximately £1,530) per person per week, excluding 12 percent government-imposed GST. New three to five-night packages are also now available for those wanting to combine it with a resort stay.

In a statement, MMPRC said the Photography Ambassador Programme is designed to stimulate and empower the local photography industry. It is created to offer a new platform for established as well as upcoming local photographers to be recognised internationally and venture into new international tourism-based domains, it added.

“It is the belief of MMPRC that this programme can help to create more job opportunities for local photographers within the Maldives tourism industry,” the statement read.

According to the state tourism promotion company, the photography ambassadors will be working closely to promote the destination, “Maldives… the sunny side of life”. The photographs taken by these ambassadors will be utilised on the official website as well as social media channels of MMPRC, and at international travel and trade shows such as ITB Berlin, it said.

After years of double-digit growth in tourism, the Maldives has over the recent years observed a slowdown in growth. Tourist arrivals have crossed the one million milestone and is on course to reach 1.5 million by the end of this year, but the country has been struggling to create demand amidst a significant increase in bed capacity.

The government has recently announced new steps to maintain a structured growth in tourism, including a slowdown in leasing islands for resort development and increased marketing efforts in key markets such as China and the Middle East.

Maldives remains favourite amongst Chinese travellers, new survey finds

Maldives ranks amongst the most favoured holiday destinations for Chinese travellers over the next year, a new survey by Hotels.com has revealed.

According to Hotels.com’s Chinese International Travel Monitor (CITM) survey, the key factors for Chinese travellers to choose their next holiday destination has safety on top of the list, with historical or heritage reasons and bucket lists being the next two important factors. Taking those factors into account, Singapore is the most favoured destination for Chinese travellers in the next 12 months.

The other nine cities are the Maldives, Sydney, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Australia’s Gold Coast, Hokkaido, Kuala Lumpur and Seoul.

More spending power, longer stays

The survey noted that Chinese tourists, in general, are expected to spend a daily average of USD 446, with average stay of  seven days per visit when they travel. Overall, they are spending more than a quarter (28 percent) of their income on international travel, with millennials being the biggest spenders, allocating 35 percent of their income to travel, it said.

According to the survey, the average amount spent per day, inclusive of accommodation, also increased by eight percent to USD 446 from USD 414 in 2016. For the first time in the survey’s history, shopping is no longer the prime reason for international travel, as leisure, culture and eco tourism are the new flavours.

Looking ahead, Chinese travellers said they intend to spend an average of 10 percent more on travel over the next 12 months.

The new generation

The survey, which was carried out amongst Chinese travellers aged 18 to 57 who have travelled overseas in the past 12 months, said there is a new generation of travellers rising in China – the ‘more generation’. Comprising Chinese travellers of all age groups, they are more educated and increasingly sophisticated in their tastes and expectations. They want more of everything; more time travelling, more locations, more exotic experiences, and they are spending more.

This generation is also providing huge economic benefits to global economies as they are traveling internationally more often and for longer than ever before. In the past year, the number of trips they took worldwide  increased from three to four, and the length of stay from five to seven days. They are also visiting multiple cities per trip, with over 80 percent saying they would not just stay in a single city.

Jessica Chuang, Hotels.com’s Regional Marketing Director for Greater China, SEA and India, believes that with the rising Chinese middle-class with vast disposable income, countries cannot ignore the impact that the Chinese tourist can have on a country’s economy.

“Southeast Asia has been identified as a key market to have significant increased outbound travel of Chinese tourists,” she was quoted as saying.

“Cities and hotels across the region must look at how to best develop solutions that tap into their enormous spending power.”

According to Hotels.com, hotels across Asia Pacific have started to recognise what is needed and have turned to social media and marketing programmes to attract the Chinese traveller, while increasing the number of Mandarin speaking staff, and offering Chinese payment facilities.

China has maintained its position as the single biggest source market despite falling numbers over the past year. In 2016, the Maldives welcomed 324,326 visitors from China, which was a 9.8 percent drop compared to the previous year. China has continued its downward spiral this year as well with a 9.1 percent drop in Chinese arrivals during the first five months of the year.

As arrivals from China drop steadily, the Maldives has recently announced plans to step up marketing in China in order to increase the number of Chinese tourists to one million per year.

Carpe Diem Maldives initiates Rescue a Reef programme with October marine expedition

Carpe Diem Maldives has expanded its ongoing collaboration with American environmental organisation Coral Reef CPR with the launch of its official CSR programme, Rescue a Reef.

Taking a concerted approach towards protecting and restoring the health of coral reefs and marine life in the Maldives, the Rescue a Reef programme invites guests to join marine expeditions on Carpe Diem’s liveaboard adventure cruises, and encourages guest donations to support Coral Reef CPR’s work.

Managing Director of Carpe Diem Maldives Amir Mansoor said, in a statement: “In our collaboration over the last 18 months, I’ve experienced first-hand how the marine biologists from Coral Reef CPR identify early on when nature is out of balance, investigate to find out the cause using their expertise and laboratory tests, and then implement scientific methods to help restore that balance, making it more robust for future events. Their methodology and scientific knowledge are among several reasons why Carpe Diem Maldives enjoys a productive collaboration with Coral Reef CPR, and we whole-heartedly support their HARP programme – Holistic Approach To Reef Protection.”

Coral Reef CPR’s Chief Scientist Dr Andrew Bruckner said: “We’re thrilled at this long term commitment from Carpe Diem Maldives. It is always wonderful when a company responsibly embraces a pro-active approach to environmental protection and conservation. Engaging with their guest divers over the last year is inspiring for us as we believe that education is at the forefront of successful coral reef conservation. Raising awareness on the critical importance of reefs and tangible actions that can be taken to ensure that these ecosystems continue to support the abundance of marine life and provide benefits to humans, is key to the future of the Maldives.”

To officially launch the Rescue a Reef initiative, Carpe Diem Maldives will host its third marine expedition with Coral Reef CPR’s returning marine biologists Dr Bruckner and Georgia Coward in October. The week-long expedition will target the house reef and surrounding areas of the company’s current resort development in Raa atoll.

“During our surveys of Raa and Baa Atoll we’ve seen an abnormally high number of cushion starfish. This is a concern, because these animals target juvenile cauliflower (Pocillopora) and staghorn (Acropora) corals, and these are the corals that are critical for a speedy recovery from last year’s bleaching event,“ Dr Bruckner explained.

From October 22-29, up to 20 recreational divers with an Advanced PADI qualification can join Dr Bruckner and his team of researchers as they conduct a Cushion Starfish removal from reefs in Raa atoll, carry out quantitative reef surveys and data analysis, while enjoying Carpe Diem’s hospitality on board Carpe Vita liveaboard cruise.

Priced at USD 700 per person for the week, the October trip includes:

  • Seven nights aboard Carpe Vita vessel
  • Three meals daily, plus snacks in between dives
  • Up to four dives daily (except for on the day of arrival and day before departure) including one or two night dives
  • Use of tanks, weights and belts
  • Non-alcoholic beverages
  • Airport transfers on the days of embarkation and disembarkation
  • Evening workshops on marine ecology, coral reef importance, marine life and more
  • On-board marine biologists
  • GST at 12 percent

According to Carpe Diem Maldives, to support the work of Coral Reef CPR, an additional contribution of USD 150 per person will be added to the final bill, payable before or at the end of the trip.

The first collaboration between Carpe Diem Maldives and Coral Reef CPR saw a dedicated COTS removal expedition in May, involving 17 recreational divers from nine countries.

In a week, the Carpe Diem vessel collected a total of 900 COTS from 15 reefs in North Male and South Male Atolls. The team was able to remove all of the starfish on 12 of the reefs, while three reefs with larger outbreaks required additional return clean-up efforts to fully eradicate these predatory starfish.

Established in 2008, Carpe Diem showcases a collection of three luxury liveaboard cruises, each accommodating 20 guests at a time. Carpe Diem is renowned for delivering a sense of discovery and adventure while enriching guests’ knowledge. The Carpe Diem name has built significant brand recognition within the top echelons of the travel industry for diving and leisure, and is currently developing a resort in the Maldives.

Maldives relaxes regulations, allows resort management contracts without govt approval

Maldives government has relaxed regulations, allowing contracts for resort management be signed without prior approval from the tourism ministry.

Under the grant of rights regulations, management contracts can only be signed after a written approval from the tourism industry.

However, an amendment to the regulations now allows owners to sign management contracts with eligible resort operators without prior approval from the ministry.

According to the amendment, which was gazetted on Thursday, such contracts would be subjected to a fine of USD 4,000 at the time of registration at the ministry. The owner and operator should also sign a separate agreement with the ministry, bearing responsibility for all aspects of the contract from the date of signing to the date of registration.

Over the past three years, dozens of uninhabited islands have been leased to local and foreign resort developers. Several international brands have entered into the market, increasing the number of resorts to 120. That number is set to increase as the government has announced the opening of some 20 new resorts by the end of this year.
