Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) along with industry stakeholders are showcasing the Maldives at the India International Travel Mart (IITM) Bangalore Edition.

MATATO’s deputy secretary general Asra Naseem said nine companies from the tourism industry have participated at the fair, which takes place from Friday to Sunday in the Indian Hub of Bangalore. The companies include local resort operators, guesthouses, and travel agents and tour operators, she added.

“In addition to individual products, MATATO will promote the Maldives Travel Awards platform,” Asra said.

The companies participating at the fair alongside MATATO include local resort operators Sun Siyam Resorts, Adaaran Resorts Maldives, Hideaway Beach Resort and Spa and Taj Exotica Resort and Spa, guesthouse operator Arena Hotels, and travel agents Bison Travels and Moodhu Holidays.

Established in 1998, India International Travel Mart has become one of India’s leading travel and tourism events. The events, held once a year in each of the Indian cities of Bangalore, Chennai, Cochin, Delhi, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune, gather tourism boards from India and abroad, airlines and cruise liners, travel agents and tour operators, online travel portals, hotels and resorts, and travel media to display and market their products. This exhibition is a great platform for the travel trade sector to meet and network with professionals for future collaborations and destination marketing.

Bangalore is one of the fastest growing cities in the Asia Pacific region and has emerged as one of India’s fastest growing outbound travel markets. With the emergence of a high tech and a highly paid workforce, Bangalore is also amongst the highest spenders on leisure and corporate travel.

India has become a major emerging source market for the Maldives’ tourism industry. Official figures show that 66,955 tourists arrived in Maldives from its closest neighbour last year, a 27.9 percent increase from the 52,368 Indian travellers that chose the Maldives in 2015.

That growth is expected to continue this year as well, as the number of Indian tourists that visited the Maldives recorded a 20.3 percent increase in the first five months to reach 30,610 compared to 25,441 in the same period last year.

Buzz Aldrin has awarded his first namesake Space Innovation Award to Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos and his Blue Origin space venture. Aldrin, the second human to walk on the moon, gave Bezos his weighty glass trophy during a Saturday night gala at NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre.

One detail about the trophy stood out in particular; it was made from 100 percent recycled glass by the team at Soneva Art and Glass studio in Soneva Fushi.

In a day-after tweet, the 87-year-old Aldrin said he was “delighted” to have Bezos and Blue Origin as the award’s first honorees. Bezos tweeted his thanks in return.

Soneva Fushi opened the Soneva Art and Glass studio in 2015, making it the first of its kind in the Maldives. The state-of-the-art facility uses only glass materials used at Soneva resorts and other tourist properties in the Maldives.

The studio produces items used at the resort’s restaurants, as well as elements for the architectural design at new and existing Soneva resorts and private residences. After the opening of the studio, each of Soneva’s restaurants also got its own signature lines of custom-made plates, bowls and glasses.

Recording artist Prem Joshua captures Four Seasons Maldives Private Island’s soul with Breath of Voavah collection

German musician Prem Joshua has released a new 12-track collection, Breath of Voavah, capturing the soul of one of the world’s most pristine locations, the new Four Seasons Private Island Maldives at Voavah.

Born out of Prem’s own visit to Voavah, the collection is an ingenious interpretation of the sights, sensations and spirit of the Maldives designed to leave guests tingling from their ears to their toes. To create the album, he worked closely with fellow musician and co-composer Dondieu Divin and invited a number of talented friends to contribute: Raul Sengupta’s darbouka on Voavah Metro Station and shaker and tabla on Banyan Birds; Sandhya Sanjana’s vocals on A Spoonful of Infinity and Under the Mangrove Tree; Sanou Olszewski’s vocals on Bharata Blues and Vasundhara; and Francky Moulet’s electric guitar on James Baba.

Melodies whisper the secrets of the Indian Ocean while honeyed harmonies trace nature’s subtlest and most sublime features – from the ripple of a fish in the lagoon to a flash of sunlight between swaying palms.

Recalling his visit to Voavah and how it inspired him, Prem shared, “The incredible beauty and purity of nature is overwhelming. But the secret of this place is the people – their warmth, liveliness, smiles, laughter, dignity, honesty, kindness and contentment. With this album I want to return exactly these impressions and secrets in the form of contemporary music — the ever-changing colours of the endless sea, from a gentle breeze to a sudden storm, the warm rain on our skin, the night sky, the jungle birds in the trees, and again and again the friendly smiles of the people.”

“It was an honour to have Prem Joshua visit us,” Armando Kraenzlin, Regional Vice President and General Manager at Voavah, was quoted as saying in an announcement by Four Seasons Resorts Maldives.

“Our Maldivian resorts have long aligned with Prem’s music, with it frequently appearing on our restaurant playlists, so to have him visit personally to capture Voavah’s essence in the form of a bespoke compilation is a very special thing.”

Prem Joshua and Band are pioneers of a crossover sound that is nestled at the cusp of Eastern tradition and Western innovation. With a soul-searching and dexterous blend of sounds and instruments, the music draws the listener into an emotionally rewarding journey across diverse musical landscapes. Elegant and contemporary, Prem Joshua and Band have consistently awed audiences with their virtuosity and confidence to create an experience that shall long outlive the classifications of genre or time.

According to Four Seasons Resorts Maldives, Breath of Voavah is available to purchase from the spa and resort shops at every Four Seasons resort in the Maldives. The CD will also feature in all rooms and suites across its Maldives properties.

Four Seasons Private Island Maldives at Voavah, located in the southern Baa atoll, opened in December, becoming the world’s first exclusive-use hideaway in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This secluded two-hectare haven transcends the private island experience by being “entirely yours” from the moment of booking, with seven bedrooms, a Beach House, a dive school and a 62-foot (18.9 metre) yacht offering ultimate privacy for up to 20 guests at a time.

The private island joins another two properties in the Maldives run by Four Seasons.

Combining innovation, wellness and conservation, Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru is a 44-acre, 103-villa wonderland in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — a 30-minute seaplane flight from the main Velana International Airport.

Its sister property, Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa, lies to the south: an enchanting garden island complete with Island Spa sea sanctuary and Tropicsurf coaches and guides. The luxury catamaran Four Seasons Explorer connects the two via three, four and seven-night cruises, plus private leisure, surf and manta ray charters.

Qaisar Naseem: example, hope, mentor for aspiring locals

The Maldives is a development success story. From one of the poorest nations in the world to one of the wealthiest in the region, the country has completely transformed over the course of a few decades, all thanks to its world-famous upmarket tourism industry.

Despite this remarkable growth of the tourism industry, it has always been dominated by expatriates, especially in managerial positions. They undoubtedly deserve our praise and appreciation for so many reasons; for bringing along with them wealth of experience and know-how, for guiding and leading local hospitality professionals, for passing their knowledge onto passionate locals and most importantly for genuinely representing this country as their own — all of which have led to the Maldives making its mark on the map as one of the ultimate destinations in the world.

But Qaisar Naseem is an exception. If there is any one success story of locals in an industry dominated by foreigners, there simply is no perfect example than this misfit who entered the industry in 1997, shortly after being expelled from the school in his native island of Fuvahmulah. He did not look back, and his dedication to self-development and enrichment has seen him rise through the ranks in the industry to become the General Manager of Paradise Island Resort.

“Motivation and commitment to self-develop and improve are the key here. You have to be willing to start from the very bottom and work your way through until you reach your goal. It might be a long journey. So, you have to be committed all the way,” Qaisar says.

His 20-year long career in the tourism industry is a testament to those ideals he so passionately preaches. After spending a year in Thundufushi as a receptionist, Qaisar joined Villa Hotels to work as an Administrator at Royal Island Resort and Spa which was under construction. He oversaw several aspects of the project, including construction, earning himself the position of Assistant Manager when it opened in 2001. While officially holding the title of Assistant Manager, he served as the Acting Resort Manager when the Resort Manager left in 2004.

It was a great opportunity for him to prove his leadership skills. But for someone who has always had the neck for self-development, it was not quite enough. He moved to Malaysia in 2006 to pursue a degree in hotel management. When Qaisar returned to the Maldives in 2009 after successfully completing his degree, he was appointed the Resident Manager at Paradise Island Resort. His commitment and massive transformation to the island both in terms of landscape as well as in administration in keeping with the current trends in the industry was another success story of him. A year later, he assumed the post of General Manager — a title he has since held, and deservingly so.

“Managing a resort like Paradise Island Resort isn’t easy. Apart from the day-to-day operations, there are so much going on here that visitors don’t see. For instance, this is the central hub of maintenance for all Villa properties. We have to manage everything, from carpentry to maintenance of our boat fleet, in such a way that it doesn’t affect the guests’ stay here,” Qaisar explains.

“We also conduct regular training sessions for our existing staff as well as for new recruits. We take in school leavers with no prior training and give them the skill set necessary to join the industry.”

Over the past eight years, Qaisar has transformed and overhauled Paradise Island Resort. Rooms have been renovated and upgraded. New room categories have been introduced. The main restaurant and bar as well as the Italian restaurant have been upgraded. The Dive and Water Sports Centre have been brought under the parent company’s management with Maldivians tasked to operate it. A state-of-the-art convention centre is being built and is set to play host to its first event — a regional conference by a multi-national development agency — in a few months.

All these changes have greatly increased the resort’s revenue and made it one of the highest performing resorts in the Maldives in terms of occupancy and guest satisfaction. It has several local and international accolades, including several recognitions in the World Travel Awards, World Luxury Travel Awards and Maldives Travel Awards, to its name as proofs of its success.

“This is all because of the team’s work. I don’t just give commands. I have to share and discuss with my team, be it about any concerns they might have or about any operational aspects. We have to work as an extended family. That’s how we have been able to achieve such phenomenal results,” Qaisar explains his management philosophy.

At a critical juncture where a number of new properties, especially those managed by international hotel chains, coming up across the archipelago, in top management positions are on the rise. But in an industry driven by large international hotel chains and expatriate managers, especially general managers, Qaisar has proven over and over again that local brands and talent can be as successful and as prominent in the excellence of service, just as them.

“The number of Maldivians in position such as GMs are very few, but there are some. Most resorts, especially those run by foreign parties, have foreign GMs. I think it’s because of the mentality. But if you look at the industry as a whole, you can see that Maldivians can deliver just as well. Villa is an example. All of our resorts are headed by locals. It’s so much easier to work with Maldivians because I think hospitality is in our DNA. With personal efforts towards self-development and motivation from the leaders, every Maldivian who joins this field is golden,” he says.

“At the same time, resort operators need to provide more opportunities for locals to reach top positions. Of course, commitment and dedication are required from the employees. But the extra push by owners, especially Maldivian hoteliers, to promote local talent in the management has to be there as well.”

As a top executive in the industry, Qaisar sees his career as being bigger than himself. His personal achievements, including the Best General Manager in Indian Ocean title at World Luxury Travel Awards in 2015 and the recent Tourism Personality of the Year award Maldives Travel Awards, are to him more about inspiring locals to make their mark in the industry. His journey alone is a testament to the fact that hard work and dedication pays off no matter where you start from.

“I see several Maldivians who worked with us at Royal Island Resort are now in senior positions like HR Managers, F&B Directors, Resident Managers, Assistant Mangers and so on. For instance, our current Executive Chef is a Maldivian who had worked as a Sous Chef at Royal Island Resort and later at several high-end properties in the country. Whenever I go to another property, I always meet people I have had the opportunity to train and work with. That’s the biggest pleasure in winning an award,” Qaisar says.

For the next generation of local executives, he advocates self-development, dedication and commitment — qualities that have made him who he is today. For hoteliers, he preaches the ideals of staff motivation, training and guidance, and team work — qualities of led. A team leader whose career is a story in itself of a self-made man, Qaisar stands as a beacon of hope for aspiring local hospitality executives; that locals can be just as good or perhaps even better at driving the local tourism industry forward.

Maldives posts strong gains in tourist arrivals amidst summer low

Maldives has posted strong gains in tourist arrivals in June, as properties across the archipelago cope with the traditionally low summer season.

Official figures for the month of June released by the tourism ministry show that a total of 85,222 tourists visited the Maldives during the month — a 7.8 percent increase over the 79,034 tourists in June 2016.

Travel trends and demographics remain largely unchanged, as the European market continued its recovery while the Chinese market posted another major decline.

Europe, the largest regional source market which has been recovering after a period of falling growth, posted an overall growth of 13.8 percent over June 2016 as arrivals increased to 29,194 from 25,661. Important European markets such as the UK (up 3.2 percent), Germany (up 49.1 percent) and Italy (up 7.2 percent) performed well last month, while recovery in the Russian market was again evident as Russian visitors to the Maldives increased by 11 percent in June to reach 3,262 compared to the 2,939 in June 2016.

However, Asia, which has recently become a major emerging source market, observed a slight drop in total arrivals, as the number decreased by 0.9 percent. This decline is largely due to recent declines in the Chinese market, which continued its downward spiral last month as well with a drop of 12.5 percent. Taking into account the latest decline, arrivals from China have decreased 10.3 percent in the first half of this year compared to the same period of last year.

However, South and Southeast Asia continued their positive growth trend in June as well, as India, the Maldives’ closest neighbour, observed a growth of 8.1 percent, while South East Asian countries such as Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand also posted significant gains; 33 percent, 19.2 percent and 4.5 percent respectively.

Relatively new markets such as Australia and the Americas also recorded significant growth in arrivals — 10.4 percent and 25.3 percent respectively — with arrivals from the US increasing by 26.8 percent, 24.9 percent from Canada and 9.7 percent from Brazil.

After months of negative growth, Middle East, which has become an emerging source market for the Maldives, also showed signs of recovery in June, as arrivals from the region increased by 3.1 percent. This positive growth was mainly because of a 161.3 percent rise in arrivals from Saudi Arabia and a 777.1 percent increase in the number of tourists that visited the Maldives from the United Arab Emirates.

According to the June statistics, total arrivals for the first half of the year increased by 6.1 percent to reach 657,540 compared to the 619,921 in the same period of last year.

After years of double-digit growth in tourism, the Maldives has over the recent years observed a slowdown in growth. Tourist arrivals have crossed the one million milestone and is on course to reach 1.5 million by the end of this year, but the country has been struggling to create demand amidst a significant increase in bed capacity.

However, the latest figures are a welcome sign for the Maldives tourism industry, which is the main economic activity in the island nation, as summer period has traditionally been considered the low season. To attract more travellers from May to September, resorts in the Maldives have announced special offers with hefty discounts and a host of other benefits.
