Maldives beats revised forecast, welcomes record 1.67 mln tourists in 2019

Maldives concluded 2019 with a record 1.67 million tourists, surpassing the destination’s own revised forecast for the year, the official tourism promotion body has announced.

Government had in June revised its forecast for the number of tourists visiting the island nation in 2019, increasing the estimate to a record 1.6 million.

The Maldives had in November welcomed the 1.5 millionth tourist of the year, reaching the destination’s initial target for tourist arrivals for the year 38 days ahead of schedule.

At a ceremony held at the main Velana International Airport Tuesday morning to welcome the first tourist of 2020, Thoyyib Mohamed, Managing Director of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) said tourist arrivals reached a record 1.67 million by year-end.

“We are satisfied with the marketing activities we did last year. I expect to see the outcome of those activities in the coming days. We are targeting to achieve more in 2020,” Thoyyib said.

In 2019, MMPRC carried out more than 130 events, including fairs, roadshows, media fam trips and joint campaigns, to facilitate in achieving the arrival numbers target.

The Maldives welcomed 1.4 million tourists in 2018. It was a 6.8 per cent increase from the 1,389,542 tourists that chose to holiday in the Maldives in 2017.

Meanwhile, the government has announced an ambitious target of attracting at least two million tourists to the popular Indian Ocean holiday destination in 2020.

The government aims to attract 2.5 million tourist arrivals per year by the end of its first five-year term in 2023.

To achieve this target, the government had added MVR 50 million (USD 3.23 million) to the annual marketing budget of the tourism ministry.

In the state budget for 2020, the government had allocated MVR 154.2 million (USD 9.98 million) for tourism promotion — up from the MVR 104.2 million (USD 6.7 million) in 2019, and MVR 34.73 million (USD 2.2 million) each in 2018 and 2017.

However, challenges remain as the world-famous holiday destination struggles to match demand with a rapid increase in bed capacity.

Over the past few years, dozens of uninhabited islands have been leased to local and foreign resort developers. Several international brands have entered into the market, increasing the number of resorts to more than 150. That number is set to increase as another 20 resorts are expected to open over the next two years.

Along with the new resort openings come the challenge of increasing demand from budget travellers who choose guesthouses over luxury resorts that the Maldives is known for. The guesthouse sector has rapidly expanded with over 500 guesthouses in operation today.

Maldives to open four new airports in 2020

Four new airports will come into operation this year, Maldives government announced Wednesday.

Transport minister Aishath Nahula told local media that construction of airports on the islands of Hoarafushi in Haa Alif atoll, Funadhoo in Shaviyani atoll, Madivaru in Lhaviyani atoll, and Maavarulu in Gaaf Dhaal atoll is nearing completion.

Funadhoo airport will come into operation this month, followed by Maavarulu in March, Madivaru in April and Hoarafushi in August, she said.

The airports being developed in Funadhoo, Madivaru and Maavarulu were amongst five new airports scheduled to open last year. However, the projects ran into several difficulties, with only two of the planned five airports opening in 2019.

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) was awarded a MVR 50 million (USD 3.23 million) contract in 2018 to reclaim 21 hectares of land off the northwestern end of Funadhoo and build a 1,200-metre runway. The company had completed the runway along with an apron and taxiway in March.

Another MVR 57 million (USD 3.69 million) contract was awarded to the public company in 2018 to develop a 1,200-metre runway, a taxiway, an apron and a jetty at Maavarulu.

MTCC was also contracted in 2018 to reclaim 16 hectares of land from the lagoon of Hoarafushi and the neighbouring uninhabited island of Maafinolhu for the airport development project.

Meanwhile, Madivaru airport is nearing completion.

Kuredu Holdings, which owns and operates several resorts in Lhaviyani atoll, is investing USD 13 million to develop the airport. The project involves reclaiming some three hectares of land from the lagoon of Madivaru, building a 1.2-kilometre runway, and a training academy for aviation officials from flagship carrier Maldivian and seaplane operator Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA).

The company can develop a city hotel to incentivise the airport operation.

Lhaviyani atoll has one of the highest concentrations of tourism activity in the Maldives, with several resorts already operating in the atoll, including Kuredu Resort Maldives, Komandoo Island Resort and Spa, Hurawalhi Maldives, Palm Beach Island Maldives Resort and Spa, Atmosphere Kanifushi, Kanuhura Maldives, Fushifaru Maldives, Cocoon Maldives, Kudadoo Maldives Private Island by Hurawalhi, and Innahura Maldives Resort.

Over 1.5 million tourists from across the globe visit the Indian Ocean island nation every year to holiday in one of the 150 plus resorts and some 500 guesthouses located in all corners of the country. The multi-billion dollar tourism industry, which is the country’s main economic activity, relies heavily on the domestic transport infrastructure, especially air travel.

Maldives, the most dispersed country on the planet with 1,192 islands spread over roughly 90,000 square kilometres, already has 14 airports, including four international airports. The government has contracted both local and international companies to develop additional domestic airports across the archipelago in a bid to boost tourism.

Awarded by TUI Group, the world’s leading integrated tourism group operating in more than 100 destinations worldwide, this recognition celebrates outstanding performance in driving sustainable tourism.

TUI, one of the largest tour operators globally, is a keen enthusiast for environmentally responsible hotels, and its Environmental Champion Award is limited to a select group of TUI Germany Hotels and Resorts, worldwide, whose performance achieves exemplary sustainable tourism.

To qualify for the award, TUI Germany guests must rate a resort more than eight out of 10 in the environment section. The hotel or resort must also hold a certificate recognised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council such as Travelife.

Embracing an eco-friendly approach as a business is nothing new for Adaaran Resorts; it is simply the conventional way of operating their resorts. Adaaran honours the ‘Adaaran Sustainability Policy’ where they endeavour to maintain a high level of environmental consciousness through strategising and executing suitable eco-sustainability practices. Sustainability awareness efforts involve educating employees and guests on the sustainable policy, Travelife training programmes for staff, display of sustainability related messages on notice boards and awareness via social media.

Amongst many sustainable initiatives, installation of bottling plants has helped terminate the use of single-use plastic water bottles altogether. At Adaaran’s resorts, guests are offered only paper straws on request, thus alleviating the use of plastic straws as well.

Good hygiene is practiced at Adaaran’s resorts at all times. No harmful chemicals are utilised other than biodegradable ones. Such practices have been derived from Adaaran’s compliance with their company-wide 7R practice: Reject, Reduce, Reuse, Reclaim, Repair, Replace and Recycle.

Adaaran’s resorts have implemented several measures to keep up with industry best practices and global sustainability trends. One of the measures taken is to operate an energy saving system in all rooms, by the use of a key card to activate the electricity in the room. Guest rooms are installed with inverter type air conditioners. A programme is currently underway to replace light bulbs with energy-efficient LED lamps in all rooms, public areas and gardens.

The group’s resorts also organise projects on island cleaning, tree planting, environmental awareness and coral transplanting.

Maldives to host dedicated shows to promote tourism, local talent

Maldives government on Sunday announced plans to host dedicated shows with local artists in a bid to boost the island nation’s multi-billion-dollar tourism industry.

In a statement, tourism ministry said the ‘Visit Maldives Destination Shows’ will be held in local islands as well as abroad.

The initiative aims to promote the unique aspects of different regions within the country whilst fostering local talent, the ministry added.

Applications are open until January 19 for local artists interested in performing at the shows. Islands interested in hosting the show can also send in their application.

Early last year, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced plans to develop tourist destinations and divide them into zones, with marketing strategies focused on informing tourists of the singularity of these zones. This will allow tourism to flourish across the country from north to south, he had said.

However, no details have been disclosed yet.

The Maldives comprises of 26 natural atolls consisting of dual island chains. Incidentally the Maldivian language has the distinct pleasure of contributing to the English word “atoll”, which was derived from the Maldivian word “atholhu”.

There are channels of various sizes between the atolls used for navigation. For efficient administrative functioning, the 26 natural atolls are categorised into 20 administrative divisions. Particularly the island nation is located in a strategic area with access to major international sea routes in the Indian Ocean.

The Maldives, located on top of a vast underwater mountain range have around 1190 islands and sandbanks. The pearl string like islands covers a land area of no less than 298 square kilometres.  All the islands are encircled by a lagoon blessed with crystal clear water. These islands are protected by a reef structure, housing one of the most exclusive and spectacular underwater life.

Maldives concluded 2019 with a record 1.67 million tourists, surpassing the destination’s own revised forecast for the year.

The government has announced an ambitious target of attracting at least two million tourists to the popular Indian Ocean holiday destination in 2020.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has said he would rather vacation in the Maldives or play golf than manage Manchester United even if it were the only job on offer.

Guardiola takes Manchester City to Old Trafford for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg as he seeks to win the competition for a third consecutive season.

Asked whether he would ever take charge of City’s fierce rivals, Guardiola said: “After training City I will never train them; I would not train [Real] Madrid [after Barcelona]. I’d be in the Maldives if I don’t have any offers. Maybe not the Maldives because it doesn’t have any golf courses.”

Guardialo is not new to the Maldives, having spent the last English Premier League season break in the island nation as well. But his characterisation that the Maldives doesn’t have golf courses is not right! We present four golf resort in Maldives worth trying.

There are nine tee boxes and six greens which allow you to play 18 holes whilst working on your short game. Each green features four or more flag positions of increasing levels of difficulty.

Average green size is 170 sqm (1,800 sq. ft). The greens are made of artificial turf, ensuring year-round perfect playing conditions. Some greens are protected by sand bunkers and some, as well by a water hazard.

Distance from the tee box to green varies from 35 – 80 yards. Some shots include dog legs and demand accuracy and control. High lofted clubs from the tee and rough (sand and pitching wedges) and a putter for the greens are best.

Meeru also opened the Maldives’ first golf Driving Range on November 1, 2003. It is 120 yards long with high target markers for shots up to 220 yards. Meeru’s artificial turf Putting Green is ideal for beginners and golfers to improve their putting skills.

Maldives on Tuesday revised its record arrival figures from last year, raising the number of tourists that visited the popular Indian Ocean holiday destination in 2019 from 1.67 million to 1.7 million.

Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), the official tourism promotion body, had announced last week that the Maldives concluded 2019 with a record 1.67 million tourists.

However, the tourism ministry said Tuesday that 1.6 million tourists visited the Maldives by December 15, with the 1.7 millionth visitor arriving in the country on December 31.

Official figures released by the tourism ministry on Tuesday show that a total of 1,702,831 tourists visited the Maldives in 2019 — a 14.7 per cent increase over 2018. December alone saw 171,292 tourists visiting the country.

Europe dominated the market with a marketshare of 49 per cent, as arrivals from European countries recorded year-over-year growth of 14.8 per cent to reach 833,904 in 2019.

Asia Pacific followed closely with a marketshare of 41.4 per cent. Arrivals from the region recorded year-over-year growth of 13.5 per cent to reach 704,117 in 2019.

The relatively new American market, which recorded year-over-year growth of 23.3 per cent, secured a marketshare of five per cent as arrivals from the US reached 84,793, whilst the Middle East and Africa had a marketshare of 3.5 per cent and 1.1 per cent, respectively.

China maintained its position as the top contributor to Maldives tourism with a marketshare of 16.4 per cent.

India, which had recently overtaken traditional European markets to claim the second spot, increased its marketshare to 9.7 per cent. India was the best-performing individual market of the year, as arrivals recorded year-over-year growth of 83.5 per cent to reach 166,015 from 90,474 in 2018.

Italy, which had recently lost the second place to India, was able to maintain its position as the third biggest source market with a market share of eight per cent by the end of the year, whilst Germany and the UK had a marketshare of 7.7 per cent and 7.4 per cent, respectively.

The Maldives had in November welcomed the 1.5 millionth tourist of the year, reaching the destination’s initial target for tourist arrivals for the year 38 days ahead of schedule.

Grand Park Kodhipparu Maldives has pledged to ban single-use plastic straws.

Plastic straws have quickly become a symbol of the world’s unnecessary reliance on plastic. Even more so, they have become a symbol of plastic’s horrific effects on the environment.

One way to reduce the impact of plastic straws on the environment is to simply stop using plastic straws. The team at Grand Park kodhipparu Maldives now encourages guest to either have their drinks directly from the glass or use a reusable alternative to plastic.

Reusable stainless steel straws are such an alternative. They are much better than plastic, for more than just the reason of benefiting the environment; they are eco-friendly and contributes to less waste in landfill.

“We are consistently seeking for new innovative ways to incorporate world eco trends into our daily island operations, whilst ensuring the guest journey and teams efficiency are at the forefront. The recent removal of all single use straws on our island is one of many initiatives that we have launched and plan to launch soon,” Dean Jarvis, Director Food & Beverage at Grand Park kodhipparu Maldives, was quoted in a statement, as saying.

Located in North Male Atoll and a 15-minute speedboat ride away from the main Velana International Airport, Grand Park Kodhipparu features a collection of 120 villas, including idyllic beachfront pool villas, breathtaking overwater villas and palatial two-bedroom villas. Sixty-five of the 120 villas come with their own private pools and the five two-bedroom suites feature extensive private terraces.

Designed by world-renowned hospitality design firm Hirsch Bedner Associates, the resort showcases sophisticated architecture, state-of-the-art interior, high ceiling of palm fringed roof, and contemporary exterior with Maldives’ traditional influence of wood and rattan, inventive rustic appeal and inviting peaceful atmosphere. Neutral tones, natural fundamentals and spacious social settings balance the unrivalled beauty of the cobalt sea and tranquility.

Grand Park Kodhipparu offers three restaurants and a pool bar, including the overwater Edge restaurant, which offers a wide selection of international culinary creations, Breeze poolside restaurant and bar, which serves lunch and light bites throughout the day followed by inventive cocktails and fine wines in the night, and the FireDOOR speciality restaurant, which offers grilled meats and fish coupled with the finest wines.

Recreational facilities at the resort include an outdoor swimming pool, gymnasium, sunrise yoga deck, wellness centre with spa and salon treatments, water sports and dive centre, children’s activity centre, and specialty shops.

In September 2019, the recently-opened Heritance Aarah became the first ever property in the Maldives to be awarded the internationally recognised Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification, which complies with the US Green Building Council rating system and is awarded to properties that save energy, water and resources; generate less waste; and support human health. The design of the resort compliments the policy of sustainability by implementing components such as fuel saving generators, energy saving LED lighting, water saving fixtures and energy efficient air conditioning.

Heritance Aarah was also acknowledged for its exceptional cuisine offering in October, after the resort’s chef team competed alongside the best of international brands in the South Asian region to become Overall Champion at the Culinary Art Food Expo 2019. The Expo, known as South East Asia’s biggest food and hospitality show, is organised by Chefs’ Guild of Lanka together with World Association of Chefs Societies.

The resort was awarded with a remarkable 29 Golds, 11 Silver and five Bronze medals.

This is a second culinary win for the new resort, after claiming the highest number of awards won by an individual property in July at the Food & Hospitality Asia Maldives 2019 competition, where the resort competed alongside reputed global hospitality chains in the Maldives

Speaking about the success of Heritance Aarah, Stasshani Jayawardena, Executive Director at Aitken Spence PLC and Chairperson of Aitken Spence Hotels said: “We are honoured that Heritance Aarah has been presented with numerous accolades after just a few months of opening. Aitken Spence Hotels are known for distinction in the culinary field and Heritance Aarah’s 11 dining and drinking outlets introduces guests to flavours from across the world.”

“Furthermore, our strategies to expand are led by guests’ expectations and design-led refurbishments to enrich the experience at our properties. A key priority is to ensure our resorts contribute positively to protect and preserve the environment and the ecosystems we operate in so we are proud that Heritance Aarah has been named as the first LEED Gold certified property in the Maldives.”

The premium all-inclusive resort of Heritance Aarah is the newest addition to the Aitken Spence Hotels portfolio after opening its doors to guests earlier last year. Located in Raa atoll and accessible from Velana International Airport via a 40-minute seaplane flight, Heritance Aarah boasts 150 villas, six restaurants, five bars, a PADI dive centre and the first of its kind IASO Medi Spa. The resort also provides guests with a range of excursions and curated experiences to choose from.

In addition to Heritance Aarah, the Sri Lankan conglomerate runs five resorts in the Maldives under its Adaaran brand of hotels: Adaaran Club Rannalhi, Adaaran Select Meedhupparu, Adaaran Select Hudhuranfushi and Adaaran Prestige Vadoo.

Maldives government has opened applications for tourist scouts to be stationed in 19 islands across the archipelago, in a bid to strengthen the safety of holidaymakers visiting the popular tourist destination.

The Water Safety Programme, conducted by the tourism ministry in association with the police and armed forces, seeks to ensure that the Maldives remains a safe place for tourists, with no risk involved in beach and water activities such as swimming.

Nineteen islands, each housing more than 100 tourist beds, have been identified for the first phase of the nationwide programme. The islands include:

  • Dharavandhoo in Baa atoll
  • Rasdhoo, Ukulha and Thoddoo in Alif Alif atoll
  • Dhigurah and Haggnaameedhoo in Alif Dhaal atoll
  • Dhiffushi, Gulhi, Guraidhoo, Himmafushi, Huraa, Maafushi and Thulusdhoo in Kaafu atoll
  • Thinadhoo in Vaavu atoll
  • Gan in Laamu atoll
  • Addu
  • Male and its sattelite town of Hulhumale, as well as the suburban town of Villimale

Candidates should be able to serve provide first aid and serve as a first responder in any rescue or help needed. They should also be familiar the locations safe for swimming.

These lifeguards, known as ‘Beach Scouts’ will be tasked with providing safety briefing, and details of the island and weather to tourists, as well as ensuring their safety in water.

Tourism is the economic mainstay of the Maldives, and the industry caters to a predominantly high-end clientele. The setup of this industry is unique in several ways; the concept of ‘one island, one resort,’ and the geographical distance between the resorts all present security and safety opportunities and challenges.

Tourism security and tourist safety, especially in a setting like in the Maldives, requires a deep understanding of the natural environment, the requirements of the industry, a thorough appreciation of the potential threats, and consideration for the privacy of the guests and the ambience within the resorts.

Security and safety measures related to complementary industries such as aviation and transport also play an important role in addressing the issue holistically.

Drowning is a rare occurrence amongst tourists in the Maldives. However, an increase in the number of drownings over the past year has alarmed authorities as well as tourist establishments across the archipelago.

Maldives, known world over for its upmarket tourism industry, has resorts in the hundreds spread across the archipelago. The industry has in recent years expanded to introduce more affordable segments, including guesthouses and liveaboards. Some 500 guesthouses have come into operation over the past decade, as the number of travellers that choose to stay in guesthouses record exponential growth.

Maldives has kicked off its tourism promotion activities for the year with a destination showcase at the South Asian Travel and Tourism Exchange (SATTE) in India.

SATTE, one of the leading B2B travel exchange shows held in India, attracts a large number of visitors from India. Last year, the fair had over 1,000 participants representing more than 50 different countries, as well as 28 Indian states and 50 Indian cities.

A total of 28 representatives from 15 companies along with officials from the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) are showcasing the Maldives at this year’s edition of SATTE, being held from Wednesday to Friday in Indian capital New Delhi.

They will be meeting with top travel trade professionals from India to further develop and strengthen the presence of the Maldives in the Indian market.

The Maldives stand is situated at a 60sqm space, designed to represent the unique undersea restaurants in the Maldives. TV screens have been installed at the stand to feature video spots that showcase the different aspects of the Maldives’ hospitality industry.

Activities available at the stand include a photo booth, which allows visitors to take pictures alongside stunning images of the Maldives and post to social media. Through this social media campaign, goodie bags will be given out. A raffle will also be carried out, with the lucky winner offered a two-night complimentary stay in the Maldives.

Visitors will also be able to taste authentic Maldivian snacks such as ‘Theluli bambukeyo’ and ‘Bondi’.

India is the second biggest source marker for Maldives tourism. Last year, tourist arrivals from the Maldives’ closest neighbour observed year-over-year growth of 99.3 per cent.

Applications open for ocean thermal energy purchase in Maldives

Applications are now open for potential off-takers in the Maldives to buy energy produced by an England-based clean energy systems developer, Global OTEC Resources’ demonstration project.

Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) is an application of solar energy in which the heat that the ocean captures from the sun’s rays is used. It is a technology for converting some of the energy that the tropical oceans absorb from the sun, first into electricity and then into fuels.

“Global OTEC Resources are offering energy rates comparable with existing diesel infrastructure and potential off-takers will be required to submit a bid for the kWh unit cost they are prepared to pay. The deadline for applications is 31 January 2020,” the firm said in a press release on Wednesday.

The firm added that it will be ready to launch its demonstration OTEC Barge in the Maldives late next year. It already has interest from financiers to build a small-scale OTEC demonstration plant with a capacity rating of 150 KW.

“This scaled-down system could provide local islands, such as Fenfushi, with 100 per cent of its yearly electricity demand. For island resorts, it would provide between 20 per cent to 50 per cent of average energy requirements,” the release added.

Founder and CEO of Global OTEC Resources, Dan Grech, said, “…Over the next 10 years, Maldives can become a global centre of excellence for OTEC developments… Maldives will no longer be dependent on costly diesel imports to provide their energy – a renewable revolution is on the way for tropical islands.”

Applications are open to all islands across the Maldives and they can apply on the company’s website OTECMaldives.com.

Maldives invites Guardiola for golf holiday

Maldives has extended an invitation to Pep Guardiola for a round of golf after the Manchester City boss mistakenly said the popular Indian Ocean holiday destination lacked a golf course.

Asked this week whether he would ever take charge of City’s fierce rivals, Manchester United, Guardiola said: “After training City I will never train them; I would not train [Real] Madrid [after Barcelona]. I’d be in the Maldives if I don’t have any offers. Maybe not the Maldives because it doesn’t have any golf courses.”

The country’s official tourism promotion body took to Twitter on Wednesday to tell the celebrated football coach that the Maldives does in fact have some of the most idyllic golf courses in the world.

“Hi Pep Guardiola! We are delighted to hear that you are interested to spend a holiday in #Maldives and would like to invite you over for a game of #golf in one of the golf courses in Maldives,” the tweet by Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) read.

Guardialo is not new to the Maldives, having spent the last English Premier League season break in the island nation as well. But his characterisation that the Maldives doesn’t have golf courses is not right.

Maldives says India fastest growing tourist market in 2019

India was the fastest growing source market for Maldives tourism in 2019, the Maldives’ tourism ministry has announced.

India, which had recently overtaken traditional European markets to claim the second spot amongst the best performing source markets, increased its marketshare to 9.7 per cent.

India was the best-performing individual market of the year, as arrivals recorded year-over-year growth of 83.5 per cent to reach 166,015 from 90,474 in 2018.

A decade ago, fewer than 16,000 Indian tourists visited the Maldives.

The popularity of the Maldives as a holiday destination has been increasing in India thanks to a boost in air connectivity between the two nations. In addition to the flagship carriers of the two countries, several Indian budget carriers such as GoAir, Spice Jet and Indigo have launched direct connections between Male and important Indian cities such as New Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai.

High profile trips of Bollywood celebrities that draw media attention have also helped boost the Maldives’ popularity amongst Indian holidaymakers. Most recently, several Indian film stars, including Bipasha Basu, Sarah Ali Khan and others have celebrated the New Year in the Maldives.

Maldives on Tuesday revised its record arrival figures from last year, raising the number of tourists that visited the popular Indian Ocean holiday destination in 2019 from 1.67 million to 1.7 million.

Official figures released by the tourism ministry show that a total of 1,702,831 tourists visited the Maldives in 2019 — a 14.7 per cent increase over 2018. December alone saw 171,292 tourists visiting the country.
