Russian charter airline Azur Air has launched charter service to the Maldives in time for the festive holiday season.
The first Azur Air charter flight to the Maldives landed at the country’s main Velana International Airport Wednesday afternoon. The Boeing 777-300ER aircraft was carrying some 400 tourists from Russia and CIS countries.
Thoyyib Mohamed, Managing Director of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), together with officials from the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and Resort Life Maldives, the local travel agency which operates the charter in collaboration with Russia’s Anex Tour, welcomed the crew and passengers of the flight.
An official from Resort Life Maldives told local media that another charter flight has been arranged for early next month. Azur Air will operate several charter flights between Vnukovo International Airport in Moscow and the Velana International Airport throughout 2020, he added.
With an all-Boeing fleet of 29 aircraft, including 11 Boeing 767-300ER jets and four Boeing 777-300ER planes, Azur Air operates seasonal charters to several countries, including China, India, Mexico, Spain, Thailand, Vietnam and the United Arab Emirates. The airline also flies to several domestic destinations in Russia.
Russia is the sixth largest source market to the Maldives. Arrivals from Russia stood at 66,161 by the end of October — a 16.3 per cent increase over the 56,882 from a year ago.

Kaimoo Travels & Hotel Services turns 40 this year, a major milestone in what has been a remarkable contribution by the company to the Maldivian tourism industry.
Wholly Maldivian owned, Kaimoo was founded in 1979 and today owns, operates and manages five properties in the Maldives, including three resorts and two hotels.
Kaimoo’s first resort, Embudu Village, opened 40 years ago with just 30 rooms. Since then, under the careful management of the late Kandi Ahmed Ismail, and his wife Moomina Haleem, the company steadily grew.
Embudu Village was progressively upgraded to its current 236 beds. The company acquired the lease of Ziyaraiyfushi island in 1996 and created Summer Island Village. It acquired Equator Village in 1999, expanding the firm’s total bed capacity to 832.
Throughout this period Kaimoo also developed real estate in capital Male, opening the Kam Hotel in 1993, the first privately owned hotel of its kind in Male. The Mookai Hotel opened in 2001, Kai Lodge in 1997, and Mookai Suites followed in 2008.
Kaimoo recently completed a multi-million dollar upgrade of Summer Island to a four-star plus resort, and has revamped Equator Village and Embudu Village.
The company also maintains a strong commitment to local causes and sustainability.
“As one of the Maldives’ first tourism companies, we have witnessed how the industry has evolved. When the first tourists stepped foot in our islands over four decades ago, they were drawn to Maldives’ seclusion, tranquility and breathtaking natural beauty. Since then, tourism has changed beyond recognition but visitors still flock to our islands for the same things: to get away from it all, to escape the frenetic city and lie on an empty beach, looking out over the blue horizon. Maldives’ transformation is underpinned by its unchanging, timeless beauty,” Manih Ahmed, Kaimoo’s Managing Director, said.
To celebrate its birthday, Kaimoo is hosting a number of celebrations throughout the year.

Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) on Friday welcomed two aircraft together to its fleet for the first time, as the Maldives’ main seaplane operator continues its expansion drive.
With the two Twin Otter aircraft, which landed at the Maldives’ main Velana International Airport Friday evening, TMA will have 55 aircraft operating on regular flights throughout the Maldivian archipelago, making it the largest seaplane operator in the world.
“We started with 2 Twin Otters almost 27 years ago and have now grown to become a massive operation of 55 twin otters today. Our heartfelt gratitude to our amazing #Tmateam and #TMAPartners for the invaluable support, camaraderie and continued patronage,” an announcement by the airline read.
TMA had in September announced plans to add four additional seaplanes to its fleet, with the first of the four arriving in September.
TMA started in 1989 as a company operating a helicopter fleet under the name Hummingbird Island Helicopters.
Eight years later, the name was changed to Hummingbird Island Airways, as the first seaplane was added to the fleet. The transition to a seaplane-only fleet was completed in 1999. A year later, the name Trans Maldivian Airways came to be, and still today represents a synonym for connecting the Maldives islands.
In February 2013, Blackstone, one of the world’s leading investment and advisory firms, acquired controlling stakes in TMA and its sole competitor Maldivian Air Taxi (MAT), and merged the two under the TMA brand.
A consortium led by US-based Bain Capital and Chinese conglomerate Tempus Group had in 2017 bought TMA from Blackstone for around USD 550 million.
Seaplane is the preferred mode of transport between the main Velana International Airport and dozens of resorts, especially those located in the outer atolls.
A new seaplane terminal being developed at the Velana International Airport is expected to come into operation in May 2020.
The terminal, which costs USD 40 million, is part of a USD 800 million mega project to expand and upgrade the Maldives’ main gateway to cater to at least seven million passengers per annum. The project also involves building a brand new runway and a new international passenger terminal, as well as other support facilities, including a fuel farm that can store 45 million litres and a 120,000 tonne cargo facility.
This year, Komandoo Resort Maldives has a very special Christmas tree; the tree is made up from 1000 plastic bottles that have washed up on Komandoo’s beaches since the start of 2019.
Although looking spectacular, the tree does help show a very real problem.
These bottles are not from Komandoo, which has worked hard to reduce its single-use plastics by over 95 per cent, and hope to be 100 per cent plastic-free in the near future. These bottles rather help show how the issues surrounding plastic use, and wider environmental pressures, are global ones — ones which require all of us to not only work hard but also work together to tackle.
Komandoo has also continued to introduce solar panels to provide energy and heating, use grey-water for its gardens and have started to provide eco-friendly bags for guests to use to take their plastic waste home (where wider recycling options are more readily available).
Research has shown that 10 per cent of all plastic used ends up in our oceans, the equivalent of 700 billion plastic bottles! Scientists have suggested that by 2050 there could be more plastic in our ocean than fish, and only by working to reduce the plastic we all use we can hope to stop and reverse this trend.
“We urge all of our guests, champions and partners to work towards a plastic-free lifestyle where possible and help protect our fragile environment, and with luck, next year’s tree will be a lot a smaller,” the resort said, in an announcement.
“We will be recycling every bottle used in the tree after the festive season.”
Located in Lhaviyani atoll, Komandoo offers 65 villas in five categories. Each of them is independent well-appointed villas spaced adequately to provide privacy.
Since first opening in 1998, the resort has provided its guests with a unique take on the Maldivian dream holiday with its quiet, adult-only vibe, understated luxury and excellent service. It has remained one of the country’s best-ranking resorts for romance and a firm favourite to anyone looking for an adults-only, small island getaway in the Maldives.
Grand Park Kodhipparu Maldives has hosted an extraordinary line-up of events for this festive season.
For this festive season, creativity at Grand Park kodhipparu has gone to a whole new level.
As part of its commitment to protect the environment, the resort initiated several eco-friendly practices to contribute to the future of this unique destination.
Chief amongst those initiatives is an eco-friendly Christmas tree. It’s not just a tree, but an eco-friendly tree made from waste bottles collected over the past year.
In addition to the eco-friendly tree, Grand Park Kodhipparu carved and painted its festive decorations in-house. These decorations — a project led by Director of Engineering Prakash Adumbil — are on display throughout the resort, from food and beverage outlets to beach club and The Spa.
Festive celebrations at Grand Park Kodhipparu kicked off on December 23 and will continue until January 1. Recreational facilities at the resort include an outdoor swimming pool, gymnasium, sunrise yoga deck, wellness centre with spa and salon treatments, water sports and dive centre, children’s activity centre, and specialty shops.

No surprises, no shocks, no hidden extras – all included in one price! You may have come across this tagline from tourism-related advertisements, and if you have, you shouldn’t be surprised or shocked. After all, that’s very true, but only if you have chosen a resort run by Atmosphere Hotels and Resorts.
Since opening its first resort in 2013, Atmosphere Hotels and Resorts have been making waves within the local and Indian Ocean hospitality industry. Especially OZEN by Atmosphere at Maadhoo, the flagship of the Indian Ocean Hotel Group, has established itself as one of the top luxury resorts with a very special holiday plan according to the brand’s core philosophy: ‘The Joy of Giving’.
Amongst Atmosphere Hotels and Resorts’ five properties already in operation, its flagship luxury all-inclusive resort, OZEN by Atmosphere at Maadhoo, stands out in particular.
Having opened its shores to the world in 2016, on the tranquil island of Maadhoo in South Male Atoll, OZEN by Atmosphere at Maadhoo offers the discerning traveller a uniquely exclusive holiday plan — the Atmosphere Indulgence, where guests will experience the ultimate hassle-free beach holiday in the Maldives. The contemporary design style of the resort’s 90 standalone luxury villas and overall ambience of OZEN complements the naturally-blessed surroundings of Maadhoo island,
We speak to Nishant Agarwal, the General Manager at OZEN by Atmosphere at Maadhoo, about what makes OZEN and its sister resorts a favourite amongst holidaymakers from the world over.
Maldives Insider: Atmosphere Hotels and Resorts is known for its guiding core philosophy, the ‘Joy of Giving’. Could you please explain how this philosophy shapes the guest experience?
Nishant Agarwal: Atmosphere prefers to go beyond the typical all-inclusive philosophy and is more extensive than what it is typically known as. Instead we refer to it as an all-encompassing Holiday Plan – custom tailored to each island’s unique experiences and for the type of guests that would come to the resort and to include elements of what they would like to experience on their holiday. We continue to strive to offer best in class experience for each uniquely positioned sub-brand of the Atmosphere Hotels & Resorts brand. In OZEN by Atmosphere we even top this, by having even included services, where people don’t think about. It’s called the Atmosphere Indulgence plan. It includes dine-around at four restaurants when you stay for minimum four nights. The only restaurant restricted to only one meal per stay is the M6m Underwater Restaurant. That’s because of the demand and we want to give all our guests the chance to have this experience. We have more than 80 labels of wine included in the package. There is no end when it comes to food and beverage. You can visit our a la carte restaurants or buffets and order whatever you want, with unlimited alcoholic beverages such as worldwide known exclusive wines, branded champagnes, high level whiskeys, gins, etc. Additionally, minibars are replenished twice a day with Champagne, wines and snacks. Sixty minutes’ spa treatment is included. You can even go for a dive – for every four nights stay.
With this plan, we are transparent in all our marketing collaterals. Whatever mentioned will be delivered and there will be no hidden costs. It’s about delivering more than what you promise. That gets incorporated in the entire service culture of the hotel where everyone serves you from their heart in order to make sure that our guests have the best experience.
MI: Maldivian resorts have traditionally focused on revenue from extras such as excursions, and food and beverage. As the ‘Joy of Giving’ philosophy stands to change that approach, what are the advantages offered by this new philosophy compare to traditional package holidays?
NA: Our Managing Director Salil Panigrahi and team wanted to create a truly luxurious lifestyle experience with no surprises, no shocks, no hidden extras – all included in one price. Where guests might usually spend up to an extra 50 per cent on top of the normal room rates to experience everything else, OZEN’s Indulgence Plan stands out as remarkably different. And so do our other four resorts – all in its own categories.
MI: What are the culinary highlights of OZEN?
NA: Variety of culinary options and restaurants — all included in the Indulgence plan — is a highlight of our resort. M6m Underwater Restaurant is without doubt the jewel in the crown of the fining dining experiences available at OZEN. This is the only underwater restaurant in the world that is included in an all-inclusive package. With a mesmeric view of the lagoon and ocean, M6m strives to deliver some of the finest modern seafood cuisine in the world. The creation, vibrant design and amazing presentation of dishes showcase the exemplary use of fine dining cooking techniques with quality ingredients, whereby drawing a fine line between gastronomy and art!
Besides that, our main restaurant, The Palms, offers international cuisine, with changing themes every day. IndoCeylon restaurant goes to traditional culinary roots of South Asia with Indian, Sri Lankan and Maldivian flavours. Peking overwater restaurant takes guests to a culinary journey to the origins of Far-East cuisine, showcasing authentic Chinese dishes. Apart from that, our ‘Joie De Vivre’ pool bar and pizzeria serves a vast selection of signature cocktails, drinks and snacks throughout the day. And every Friday – when all outlets are closed – we celebrate the Indian Ocean Nights – with live cooking stations open-air, live music, BBQ and much more.
MI: What is being done to maintain and further advance OZEN’s current standing amongst Maldivian resorts?
NA: We are well-positioned in the market. So, the challenge is to sustain the position. One thing we don’t compromise is our service philosophy and culture, which comes from our people. As food and beverage is one of our biggest strengths, we keep on enhancing what we offer. We regularly change the menus at the restaurants. And in addition to providing some of the world’s finest Champagne, guests at OZEN by Atmosphere at Maadhoo can enjoy a variety of exclusive foods from Italy, Spain, Germany and France; all of which come from regions that are well-known for producing the highest-quality products. So we have very special bread, meat, olive oil and balsamic vinegar in OZEN by Atmosphere. Last year, we introduced a gin bar with more than 40 varieties of gin — also included in the Indulgence package. We are also working on introducing more services, including a new restaurant and a visiting celebrity chefs programme. The latest addition to OZEN’s extensive beverage menu is a selection of Guy Charbaut Champagne from one of France’s finest wine-making regions, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. This region is known worldwide for producing superior quality Terroir Champagne. So again, this will be also part of our Indulgence Plan. We are constantly improving and thinking about how to make our offer better. There is always room for improvement; and this exactly is our challenge.
MI: What do you focus the most in leading the team at OZEN?
NA: The essence of our service and guest experience is based on our team. To have a great team, you need to motivate and keep them engaged. Since we are away from other islands, we have to ensure that they feel like being part of one big family. At OZEN, we have a separate island for team members. In fact, we are the first resort in Maldives with a separate island for the team. We have a recreation centre with a fully-equipped gym and other facilities. Our HR team is trying to keep them involved with recreational activities such football, cricket, etc. We also organise regular fishing trips, island trips and picnics to nearby islands. We have a diverse team, comprising of 26 nationalities and more than 30 languages. We provide equal opportunities to both genders and try to maintain a good gender balance at all times. For instance, at M6m, we have an international all-female team So you will be served from maybe someone from Azerbaijan, Brazil or Uzbekistan. I believe in empowering the team by giving the authority to make decisions.
MI: Atmosphere Hotels and Resorts is arguably one of the most successful hospitality brands from the Maldives. What’s next for the brand?
NA: We have ambitious expansion plans for the Maldives and Sri Lanka. In Sri Lanka we will open another OZEN by Atmosphere – which will take our brand to the next level of hospitality with our first international venture. Our newest addition VARU by Atmosphere just opened on October 17, 2019, it is already a success. Further to come – stay tuned.
Ever looked at a seabird and wondered what it would be like to fly over the ocean?
Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru has become the first resort in the Maldives to make flying dreams come true with the launch of four pioneering hydrofoil experiences: Kite Foiling, Wake Foiling, Lift Foiling and Naish Wing-Surfer.
Brought to the Maldives in partnership with ocean innovators Ocean Group Pvt Ltd, hydrofoils redefine what’s possible on a board: a unique chance to become one with the water, gliding knife-like over its surface at thrilling speeds using a hydrodynamically designed fin with wings.
Featuring the latest technology and designs, the new hydrofoil experiences include:
Kite Foiling: Kitesurfing with the addition of a hydrofoil under the board, allowing boarders to reach unprecedented speeds as they “fly” over the surface of the water. Boarders get to experience true synchronicity with the ocean with the resort’s cutting edge North Pro hydrofoil kiteboard.
Slingshot Wake Foil: The very best of wakeboarding combined with the elevated thrill of using a hydrofoil, for those who want to cruise the waves behind the resort’s MasterCraft ski boat.
Lift Foil: A truly back-to-the-future Indian Ocean mash-up, the electric foil board uses a hand controller synced with an electric motor so riders can choose their own speed and master the art of “flying” over the surface of the water.
Naish Wing-Surfer: Those looking for a new wind-powered thrill should look no further than the wing-surfer. A cross between a windsurfing sail and kiteboarding kite, it’s the ultimate handheld inflatable board riding wing, with no rigging and no strings attached.
“With advances in the technology in water sports defying what seems possible, we’re delighted to be the first to bring these thrilling foil adventures here to the Maldives,” Armando Kraenzlin, General Manager at Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, was quoted in a statement, as saying.
Combining innovation, wellness and conservation, Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru is a 44-acre, 103-villa wonderland in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — a 30-minute seaplane flight from the main Velana International Airport.
Its sister property, Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa lies to the south: an enchanting garden island complete with Island Spa sea sanctuary and Tropicsurf coaches and guides. It features 96 thatched beach and water accommodations constructed by local craftsmen using indigenous materials and techniques to reflect a true sense of the Maldives.
The luxury catamaran Four Seasons Explorer connects the two properties via three, four and seven-night cruises, plus private leisure, surf and manta ray charters.
The latest addition to the Maldives collection, Four Seasons Private Island Maldives at Voavah, Baa Atoll opened in 2016 as the group’s first exclusive-use private island: off limits to everyone else, limitless to the guests.

Furaveri Island Resort and Spa is reinventing itself in this year!
All set to launch with 33 newly-built villas and additional upgrades, the resort has embarked on a journey to rebrand itself into a four-star deluxe property, to be known as Furaveri Maldives.

Staying true to core values such as making the best of what it has, the resort tuned into the simple beauty of the surroundings and embraced nature as its guide.
For the rebranding, Furaveri invoked the colour teal, which resembles the meeting point of open ocean and the lagoon, and the warm sunset yellow of memorable evenings by the beach.
