The world record set by Maldives for the most people freediving simultaneously has been officially registered in the Guinness World Records.
On October 1, the island nation’s President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih joined 520 others in simultaneous freediving off the lagoon of Baros Maldives resort, staying underwater for around 30 seconds.
Freediving world champion Willian Trubridge, a double world record holding freediver from New Zealand, also participated in the event, dubbed “Neyvaa”, which in local Dhivehi language means breath.
Officials of Guinness at the scene declared the “Neyvaa” event as a new world record and presented the official certificate to President Solih.
“Neyvaa” was the Maldives’ attempt to break the world record previously held by ‘La Scuola del Mare 2’ (Verona), in Torri del Benaco, Verona. Verona had set the world record for the most people freediving simultaneously on October 11 2009 with 280 people.

Manta Air on Sunday launched the first scheduled seaplane service in the Maldives, bringing another revolutionary experience to the skies of Maldives.
A purpose-built seaplane terminal at the Maldives’ main Velana International Airport was inaugurated Sunday afternoon.
Manta Air had brought in four DHC-6 Twin Otter aircraft to begin its seaplane operations. The airline is set to welcome another six to its seaplane fleet by year-end.
All of Manta Air’s DHC-6 Twin Otter aircraft are fitted with the latest Garmin G950 NXi next generation integrated flight deck avionics combined with a weather radar. Garmin G950 equipment includes dual core modern processing power, providing crew with immediate access to flight plan data and weather radar information.
Manta Air’s seaplane operations set a new benchmark for the seaplane service standards in the Maldives, as it follows the high standards already set by Manta Air’s domestic flight operations.
The arrival of Manta Air has already been a game changer in the domestic aviation industry, removing the fears of flight uncertainty for passengers flying in the Maldives, and setting new standards in service excellence along the way with pre-published schedules and a tailored approach to provide an amazing experience to all passengers.
For its seaplane service, Manta Air will publish monthly schedules — a first in the Maldives’ seaplane sector as well as in the world. Passengers will receive confirmed flight timings along with their hotel confirmation.
In addition to the seaplane service, Manta Air utilises three brand new ATR 72-600 aircraft to operate domestic flights to Dhaalu Airport, located on the island of Kudahuvadhoo in Dhaalu atoll, and Dharavandhoo Airport, located on the island of Dharavandhoo in Baa atoll, from the Maldives’ main Velana International Airport.
Manta Air’s venture into seaplane operations comes, as a new seaplane base at the main Velana International Airport nears completion.
As part of an ongoing USD 800 million mega project to expand and upgrade the Maldives’ main gateway, construction of a new seaplane terminal kicked off in January 2018. The four-storey terminal, which will be equipped with over 80 docking platforms and other support facilities, is expected to come into operation by the end of the year.
Seaplane is the preferred mode of transport between the main Velana International Airport and dozens of resorts, especially those located in outer atolls.

Manta Air on Wednesday welcomed the fifth aircraft to its seaplane fleet, as the game changing local airline begins its seaplane operations.
The DHC-6 Twin Otter, which landed at the Maldives’ main Velana International Airport Wednesday afternoon, is the fifth out of 10 aircraft joining Manta Air’s seaplane fleet this year.
The fifth aircraft in Manta Air’s seaplane fleet is a DHC6-200HG series aircraft.
The HG models feature a modification that boosts the gross weight of the Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-27-powered aircraft by 410kg to 5,680kg.
Operators are allowed to use the full 620 shaft horsepower of its PT6A-27 engines. This effectively transforms the operation of a DHC6-200 to match the capabilities of a DHC6-300 twin-engined turboprop.
The HG mods for 300/400 series are intended to allow maximum takeoff weight increases of 1,500 pounds under standard airworthiness certification. The increase would give each model a 14,000 pound mtow for standard-category operations, including all passenger flights.
Manta Air had earlier brought in four DHC-6 Twin Otter aircraft.
All of Manta Air’s DHC-6 Twin Otter aircraft are fitted with the latest Garmin G950 NXi next generation integrated flight deck avionics combined with a weather radar. Garmin G950 equipment includes dual core modern processing power, providing crew with immediate access to flight plan data and weather radar information.

A campaign to plant a coconut palm for every t-shirt bought has been launched.
At a special ceremony held Saturday, The ‘Beyyaa’ (a Dhivehi slang, similar to ‘bro’ in English) campaign was inaugurated by Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.
The former president highlighted the importance of the campaign, adding that the number of coconut palms has decreased significantly.
“All customers purchasing a t-shirt are in reality purchasing a palm tree in their name,” he said.
As part the ‘Beyyaa’ campaign, conducted in collaboration with flagship carrier Maldivian, a coconut palm will be planted for every t-shirt bought from the ‘Beyyaa’ company.
Buyers will receive an email with details of the plant, including the island where it was planted.
The t-shirts will be available from company’s website and from Maldivian’s Moonimaa lounge at the main Velana International Airport. Each t-shirt retails for USD 30.
Maldivians place tremendous importance on the abundant coconut palms – they are represented in the national flag by the green rectangle. The coconut palm is also the national tree.
The picture of Maldives isn’t complete without the verdant presence of coconut palms. Its distinctive silhouette acts as a herald, with promises of sandy beaches and clear blue seas underneath.
Coconut palms are not just ornamental signs of the island paradise; often called the Tree of Life, they are one of the most useful trees in the world. From its woody trunk all the way up to the swaying fronds, the coconut palm has been providing a bounty of natural resources to the Maldivian people for generations.
Traditional Maldivian sailboats, known as dhoni, were built using coconut timber. Fibres extracted from the husk of the coconut, called coir, is used to make ropes and fishing nets.
Palm fronds were used to make baskets and mats. The green of the leaves was removed, leaving behind the wood-like strips in the middle, which were collected and tied together to make brooms. Dried palm fronds were used to thatch roofs- an architectural feature still seen today on the villas at our resorts.
Scraped coconut is one of the most common ingredients used to make many local dishes, as is coconut milk in almost all types of Maldivian curries. Even dried coconut shell halves were repurposed as bowls or attached to handles to make ladles.
Visitors to the Maldives will surely know that there is nothing as refreshing in this tropical heat as a cool helping of coconut water, straight from the source.
Noku Maldives has launched a campaign aimed at encouraging people to go for reusable options.
The #SayYesToReusable campaign kicked off last week, with the first batch of eco-bags being handed over to Speaker Mohamed Nasheed and Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla. Ahmed Easa, member of parliament for Kendhikulhudhoo constituency, represented the resort.
It’s my honour and privilege to be part of Noku Maldives Resort Reusable initiative. They are giving away their very first design of reusable bag to Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ms Eva Abdulla,” MP Easa said on Twitter.
“I hope this initiative will spread awareness amongst all islands in N. Atoll.”
Launched as part of Noku Maldives’ continued efforts towards social sustainability and environmental conservation, the campaign sees distribution of reusable eco-bags throughout the resort’s native Noonu atoll.
The resort will continue to educate its associates, guests and communities around the areas it operates, about the need to consider the five Rs of responsible consumption – Reduce, Refuse, Reuse, Recycle and Remove. This is achieved by driving events such as community awareness sessions and cleanups, guest talks on property and supporting international events such as Earth Day, World Cleanup Day and World Environment Day.
Located on the island of Kuda Funafaru in the northern Noonu atoll, Noku Maldives is accessible by a scenic 45-minute seaplane flight from the main Velana International Airport.
Nestled amidst luscious tropical greenery and enveloped by a peaceful blue lagoon are 20 beach villas and 30 overwater villas. Each spacious unit is designed to offer utmost privacy and fitted with modern amenities to provide comfort. The refined elegance of each villa with its soft white hues and dark wood accents complement the beauty of nature seen through large bay windows and french doors.
The spacious beachfront Palms Restaurant serves up à la carte and buffet-style dining, while the menu of Thari Restaurant features elements of Thai, Japanese and Singaporean cuisine — flavourful tastes of the countries where Noku hotels are located in. The Palms Bar allows guests to indulge in refreshing cocktails that blend Eastern and Western influences. Guests can also have a thirst quenching beverage from the Thari Bar and lounge at the large main pool area.
Embracing nature is an integral aspect of the wellness programme at Noku Maldives. Rejuvenation begins with a beautiful garden walkway leading up to six double treatment suites with a relaxing view of the ocean. Each treatment room is thoughtfully designed as a sanctuary where stone and wooden accents achieve a deep sense of calm and relaxation. The wellness treatments use natural ingredients to enhance total wellbeing.
The pristine location of Noku Maldives houses a thriving marine ecosystem that includes dolphins, rays and populous fish diversity. Professional dive instructors at the resort’s dive centre will show guests the rich diversity of marine life suitable for all levels of experiences. Guests can also catch the light ocean breeze on a chartered catamaran, or feel the adrenaline rush while riding the waves on a jet ski or windsurfing activities.
US-based private equity firm KSL Capital Partners has acquired a minority stake in luxury resort chain Soneva.
In a statement, Soneva said an affiliate of KSL Capital Partners has taken a significant minority stake in the company. The partnership with KSL underscores the attractiveness of the Soneva brand and will support the company’s short- and long-term development goals, it added.
“The more we have gotten to know Soneva, the more excited we are about the opportunities to help Soneva grow. At KSL, we invest solely in travel and leisure, and we recognise the power of the Soneva brand platform in the expanding market for luxury experiential travel,” Tina Yu, a principal at KSL, was quoted in a statement, as saying.
As part of KSL’s investment, Sailing Capital, which had invested in Soneva in 2014, redeemed its investment in Soneva.
With the support of Sailing Capital, Soneva was able to expand its portfolio in the Maldives. This includes the 2016 opening of the award-winning Soneva Jani resort, which firmly re-established Soneva as a leader in the overwater villa market with its stunning design and architecture.
“We are immensely grateful to Sailing Capital for the faith it showed in Soneva and our management team. Sailing has been instrumental in our success to date,” Sonu Shivdasani, founder and CEO of Soneva, said.
“We are delighted to welcome KSL as our partner in Soneva. We have many exciting plans, and I cannot imagine better partners to help execute the next stage of Soneva’s growth.”
Soneva has earlier announced plans to open two new resorts in Maldives over the next three years.
Founded in 1995 by Indian British hotelier Sonu Shivdasani and his Swedish wife Eva Malmström Shivdasani, Soneva currently runs two resorts in the Maldives, Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani, and luxury yacht, Soneva in Aqua. The world-leading luxury resort operator also operates Soneva Kiri resort in Thailand.
In 1995, the award-winning luxury resort Soneva Fushi set the standard for all desert island barefoot luxury hideaways in the Maldives. Located in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Soneva Fushi pairs Robinson Crusoe fantasy with intelligent luxury.
Sixty-two private villas with their own stretch of beach are hidden amongst dense foliage within touching distance of a pristine coral reef. Eight new one- and two-bedroom Water Retreats, perched above the turquoise depths of the Indian Ocean, are scheduled to open to guests by April 2020. Intuitive service is provided by Mr./Ms. Friday butlers.
Highlights include the open-air Cinema Paradiso, counting Saturn’s rings in the high-tech Observatory, the home-made chocolate and ice cream rooms, five hundred wines to choose from, six different restaurants and countless destination dining options. In November 2015, Soneva launched a floating villa concept, Soneva in Aqua, a treasure trove children’s Den and a multi-purpose facility encompasses a glass gallery, boutique and studio where guests can learn the art of glass blowing.
If the experiences are magical, the philosophy is simple: No news, no shoes. No pretensions either.
Opened in December 2016, Soneva Jani is Soneva’s newest property and the world-leading luxury hotel group’s second resort in the Maldives.
Soneva Jani is located on the island of Medhufaru within a 5.6 kilometre lagoon in the Noonu atoll, and has uninterrupted ocean views in all directions. The lagoon is 35 minutes by seaplane from Velana International Airport and one hour by speedboat from Soneva Fushi.
Meaning ‘wisdom’ in Sanskrit, Soneva Jani currently comprises 24 overwater villas and one island villa, with additional villas to be built in phase two. Five islands encircle the lagoon, each one with soft white sands and covered in rich tropical vegetation. Four of the five islands will remain untouched, making Soneva Jani the lowest density development in the Maldives. The overwater villas are spaced across the expansive lagoon, offering privacy and extensive views over the Maldives’ turquoise waters. The island villas will be tucked into the lush greenery, providing the ultimate privacy, and all within steps of the beach.
Soneva Jani’s main guest facilities are located at The Gathering, the heart of the overwater villas. This dramatic three story structure is home to the main dining outlets, in addition to the Soneva Spa, library, retail area and wine cellar. It is located next to the Maldives’ first overwater Observatory.
Facilities on the island include the overwater Cinema Paradiso, the Eco Centro Waste-to-Wealth centre, organic gardens, tennis courts, water sports champa and Zuhair’s Beach on a desert island in the lagoon.
