The Nautilus becomes Maldives’ only Relais & Châteux member

Bohemian luxury hideaway The Nautilus Maldives has been unveiled as the only Maldivian member of Relais & Châteaux, one of the world’s most prestigious hotel and restaurant associations and a globally recognised signifier of exceptional quality.

Coming hot on the heels of its official opening in Spring 2019, The Nautilus’ inclusion as one of only 13 new Relais & Chateaux members this year further burnishes its already glowing credentials as one of the Indian Ocean’s most immaculate luxury private island experiences.

Established in 1954, Relais & Châteaux is an international association of 580 unique hotels and restaurants owned and operated by independent entrepreneurs — often families — who are passionate about their craft and deeply committed to forging warm, lasting relationships with their guests.

Established on five continents, Relais & Châteaux invites people across the globe to savour delicious journeys, to discover the inimitable art de vivre engrained in each local culture and to share an incomparable, unforgettable experience.

“We are very happy to count The Nautilus as a member of our family. This is a perfect example of what Relais & Châteaux is: properties anchored in their region, ambassadors of their heritage, but also passionate about their craft. The hotel is perfectly located and will offer a delicious Maldivian immersion for our guests,” Philippe Gombert, President of Relais & Châteaux, was quoted in a statement, as saying.

In his 1870 classic Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Jules Verne described his legendary Nautilus as a “masterpiece containing masterpieces”; launched in Spring 2019, The Nautilus Maldives is quickly earning a similar reputation.

Located in the UNESCO biosphere reserve of Baa atoll, The Nautilus is a luxury bohemian hideaway which celebrates freedom and individuality, where guests are encouraged to be themselves and shape their own personal journey.

With a total of only 26 keys, The Nautilus, which can also be taken exclusively as a private island, offers accommodation perfect for groups or families, sleeping anywhere from four up to 12 guests. Each and every House has its own large private pool, ranging in size from 40 to 90 square metres.

Throughout the resort, beautiful one–off collectibles and objets d’art make it feel like the private home of a friend with immaculate taste.

Uniquely for The Maldives, a dedicated private butler is allocated to each House, at every room category.

Dining is “unscripted” and is about liberating the palate. There is nothing so pedestrian as dress codes, opening and closing times or tray charges; menus at the overwater fine dining restaurant Zeytoun, beachside grill Ocaso, pool bar Naiboli and relaxed all-day eatery Thyme are for inspiration only.

A beautiful overwater spa (using products by Maison Caulières and Omorovicza), a liveried fleet of yachts and a seaplane, beautiful ‘boho-luxe’ interiors and a breathtaking house reef complete a quintessential Maldives experience at the highest level, without need for gimmicks.

‘Plastic painting’ with Mbongeni Buthelezi at Coco Collection’s resorts

Coco Bodu Hithi has welcomed South African artist Mbongeni Buthelezi for a month-long residency.

Known for inventing his own method of “plastic painting”, Mbongeni is the first artist to take up residence as part of Coco Collection’s new art programme, “Nurture”.

“Nurture” will be an ongoing effort by Coco Collection to help and encourage the development of art and artists focused on environmental and wildlife conservation. By using art to educate and raise awareness of these global issues, Coco Collection’s goal is to contribute to the care and protection of the environment around.

Mbongeni is the first artist to initiate this series, as he explores an unfamiliar medium by creating stunning masterpieces using a heat gun and thousands of pieces of plastic rubbish.

“I use rubbish to create something beautiful from it. I collect something that has no value and give it new life. That’s what we can do with ourselves and our lives,” Mbongeni said.

Mbongeni chose plastic to work with during his art school days as a way of making a statement in order to raise awareness about the plastic challenge our world is facing today and to stand out amongst the sea of artists emerging from his local scene.

He scavenges for art supplies on the streets of Johannesburg on the way to his studio and meticulously lays strips of discarded plastic onto a canvas. This is followed by a blast from the heat gun to sculpt the plastic into gritty portraits full of texture depicting the beauty, diversity, and reality of life.

Having developed this method 20 years ago, Mbongeni has since made a name for himself as one of South Africa’s most original artists having his work featured across the globe.

During the residency at Coco Bodu Hithi, Mbongeni will be working on a piece titled, “The Children of the Sea”, depicting the culture and heritage of the Maldives and how the lives of Maldivians intertwines with the ocean. The finished piece will be transferred to sister resort Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu for installation at the end of the residency.

Mbongeni will also be installing five art pieces around the walkways of Coco Bodu Hithi, all of which will showcase the marine life of the Maldives.

As part of the residency, Coco Bodu Hithi will also be hosting an exhibition featuring a number of Mbongeni’s brilliant, captivating pieces that has been curated for the event.

In addition to the exhibition, Mbongeni will be leading workshops where he will be sharing his techniques and knowledge while helping attendees explore, experiment, and get in touch with their creative side. Some of the Maldives’ most notable and established artists are set to attend the workshop, which will also be open for resort guests and local school children.

Turkish Airlines offers special fares from Maldives to explore Turkey

Expedite Maldives, the General Sales Agent (GSA) for Turkish Airlines in Maldives, has introduced special promotional fares to travel to Turkey from the Maldives.

The fares offered by Expedite Maldives include:

  • Istanbul: USD 724
  • Cappadocia: USD 834
  • Kayseri: USD 835

The fares are on return economy basis, with ticketing period from now to November 25. Travel period is from December 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020.

Turkish Airlines currently operates a daily direct service between Atatürk International Airport in Istanbul to Velana International Airport in Male.

The direct service between Istanbul and Male serves as a hassle-free connection for those wishing to visit the Maldives from Europe as well as Maldivians that want to explore Turkey.

With its long history at the centre of empires, Istanbul offers a wealth of historic and religious places to take in. The bulk of these ancient monuments, dating back to Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods, including the Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace, Sultanahmet Mosque (Blue Mosque), and Basilica Cistern are located around Sultanahmet Square, whilst some others are dispersed throughout the peninsula of old city, such as Church of St Savior in Chora (Kariye Müzesi), entire inside of which is covered by mind-blowing frescoes and mosaics. An impressive section of mostly intact Theodosian walls, which mark the full length of western boundary of the peninsula, is right next to this particular church.

As if plucked from a whimsical fairytale and set down upon the stark Anatolian plains, Cappadocia is a geological oddity of honeycombed hills and towering boulders of otherworldly beauty. The fantastical topography is matched by the human history there. People have long utilised the region’s soft stone, seeking shelter underground and leaving the countryside scattered with fascinating cavern architecture. The fresco-adorned rock-cut churches of Göreme Open-Air Museum and the subterranean refuges of Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı are the most famous sights, whilst simply bedding down in one of Cappadocia’s cave hotels is an experience in 21st-century cave living.

Mixing Seljuk tombs, mosques and modern developments, Kayseri is both Turkey’s most Islamic city after Konya and one of the economic powerhouses nicknamed the ‘Anatolian tigers’. Most travellers whizz through town on their way from the airport to Cappadocia’s villages, only seeing the shabby high-rises and ugly industrial factories on Kayseri’s outskirts. The city centre of this Turkish boom town, though, is full of surprises. An afternoon pottering within the narrow bazaar streets and poking about the Seljuk and Ottoman monuments – all loomed over by mighty Erciyes Dağı (Mt Erciyes) – is an interesting contrast to exploring the more famous fairy-chimney vistas to the city’s west.

Turkish Airlines, the flag carrier of Turkey, operates scheduled services to 315 destinations in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas, making it the largest mainline carrier in the world by number of passenger destinations.

The airline serves more destinations non-stop from a single airport than any other airline in the world, and flies to 126 countries, more than any other airline.

Komandoo Maldives has introduced two new villa categories.

Based on your feedback and desire to be able to book a preferred location of your water villa or beach villa, Komandoo has introduced Ocean Jacuzzi Water Villas and Premium Jacuzzi Beach Villas.

A favourite for honeymoons, the Ocean Jacuzzi Water Villas afford a stunning view of the sunrise and are desired for the indoor Jacuzzi that offers views of the ocean and is perfect for a Jacuzzi indulgence you can have arranged, and for the abundance of marine life that can be found right in front of the villa.

Komandoo’s Premium Jacuzzi Beach Villas line the island’s most beautiful stretch of beach, just steps away from the sparkling main lagoon and away from the resort’s main facilities, bringing about even more peace and quiet.

Two of the main reasons why guests who have been before love this location are the proximity of Thundi Bar and its relaxation area (perfect for sundowners!) and the shallow, gently sloping house reef with lots of schooling fish.

Located in Lhaviyani atoll, Komandoo offers 65 villas in five categories. Each of them is independent well-appointed villas spaced adequately to provide privacy.

Since first opening in 1998, the resort has provided its guests with a unique take on the Maldivian dream holiday with its quiet, adult-only vibe, understated luxury and excellent service. It has remained one of the country’s best-ranking resorts for romance and a firm favourite to anyone looking for an adults-only, small island getaway in the Maldives.

S Hotels & Resorts has entered into a joint venture with Myanmar’s Eco World Developer Holding Company Limited (EWD) to develop a high-end lifestyle resort on the third island of the Croassroads Maldives integrated tourism destination project.

Construction is expected to begin in 2020, with opening slated for 2022.

“The Island 3 resort would enable the company to expand our offerings to experiential travellers in the Maldives,” Dirk De Cuyper, Chief Executive Officer of S Hotels & Resorts, was quoted in a statement, as saying.

The first island is home to the vibrant lifestyle district and heart of the mega project, The Marina @ Crossroads — an 11,000sqm retail and entertainment space. It offers an extensive array of attractions for visitors, including Hard Rock Cafe Maldives; Café del Mar, a 30-berth luxury marina; extensive retail, food and beverage outlets; a Maldives Discovery Centre supporting local arts and crafts; a Marine Discovery Centre; and a multi-purpose event venue and a junior beach club.

Soneva Jani unveils new dining concept, Guess Who’s Cooking?

Soneva has unveiled Soneva Jani’s newest dining experience: Guess Who’s Cooking.

This dining experience has a secret menu concept, where the diners won’t know which chef is cooking or what cuisine they will be enjoying until just before the meal. The kitchen is housed within the walls of a Bedouin tent, and whilst there is room for dining inside the tent in case of rain, the main experience is on the beach.

The chefs who will be featured include Soneva Jani’s specialty chefs, visiting chefs from Soneva Fushi and Soneva Kiri, as well as international visiting chefs.

A rough idea of the menu will be revealed on the day of the experience, but only once diners are seated at the tables on the sand will the chef emerge from the cooking tent to present the menu in all of its glory – outlining the concept, ingredients and their inspiration for the dishes.

Soneva Jani hopes that this ever-changing roster of chefs will highlight the culinary prowess of Soneva’s chefs and those visiting the resort. The lack of a menu paves the way for innovative and exciting dining, if a guest chooses Guess Who’s Cooking twice during their stay, they should be able to enjoy two distinct experiences.

Examples of the line-up of Soneva’s chefs include: Chef Kat (Thai cuisine), Chef Sun (Asian cuisine), and Chef Ansari (Indian thali) – all from Soneva Jani, as well as Chef Sobah (Maldivian cuisine) from Soneva Fushi and Chef Benz (Thai cuisine) from Soneva Kiri.

The price per person is dependent on the particular menu of the day, starting at USD 175++ for Soneva’s chefs and USD 350++ for a degustation menu by a visiting international chef.

Guess Who’s Cooking is only available two to three nights a week, seating just 16 diners. Dinner is from 7.30-10pm, a sunset cocktail experience is available from 6.30-7.30pm. There will also be the occasional lunch pop-up from 12.30-3pm.

Opened in December 2016, Soneva Jani is Soneva’s newest property and the world-leading luxury hotel group’s second resort in the Maldives.

Soneva Jani is located on the island of Medhufaru within a 5.6 kilometre lagoon in the Noonu atoll, and has uninterrupted ocean views in all directions. The lagoon is 35 minutes by seaplane from Velana International Airport and one hour by speedboat from Soneva Fushi.

Meaning ‘wisdom’ in Sanskrit, Soneva Jani currently comprises 24 overwater villas and one island villa, with additional villas to be built in phase two. Five islands encircle the lagoon, each one with soft white sands and covered in rich tropical vegetation. Four of the five islands will remain untouched, making Soneva Jani the lowest density development in the Maldives. The overwater villas are spaced across the expansive lagoon, offering privacy and extensive views over the Maldives’ turquoise waters. The island villas will be tucked into the lush greenery, providing the ultimate privacy, and all within steps of the beach.

Soneva Jani’s main guest facilities are located at The Gathering, the heart of the overwater villas. This dramatic three story structure is home to the main dining outlets, in addition to the Soneva Spa, library, retail area and wine cellar. It is located next to the Maldives’ first overwater Observatory.

Facilities on the island include the overwater Cinema Paradiso, the Eco Centro Waste-to-Wealth centre, organic gardens, tennis courts, water sports champa and Zuhair’s Beach on a desert island in the lagoon.

Manta Air begins world’s first scheduled seaplane service

Game changing local airline Manta Air on Sunday launched the first scheduled seaplane service in the world, bringing another revolutionary experience to the skies of Maldives.

A purpose-built seaplane terminal at the Maldives’ main Velana International Airport was inaugurated Sunday afternoon. Moosa Solih, the acting Managing Director of airport operator Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), opened the airline’s dedicated terminal.

Manta Air also operated its first commercial seaplane flight on Sunday, taking an exhilarating 40-minute journey south of capital Male to Hotel Riu Atoll aboard one of its Twin Otter aircraft.

Manta Air had brought in four DHC-6 Twin Otter aircraft to begin its seaplane operations. The airline is set to welcome another six to its seaplane fleet by year-end.

All of Manta Air’s DHC-6 Twin Otter aircraft are fitted with the latest Garmin G950 NXi next generation integrated flight deck avionics combined with a weather radar. Garmin G950 equipment includes dual core modern processing power, providing crew with immediate access to flight plan data and weather radar information.

Manta Air’s seaplane operations set a new benchmark for the seaplane service standards in the Maldives, as it follows the high standards already set by Manta Air’s domestic flight operations.

The arrival of Manta Air has already been a game changer in the domestic aviation industry, removing the fears of flight uncertainty for passengers flying in the Maldives, and setting new standards in service excellence along the way with pre-published schedules and a tailored approach to provide an amazing experience to all passengers.

For its seaplane service, Manta Air will publish monthly schedules — a first in the Maldives’ seaplane sector as well as in the world. Passengers will receive confirmed flight timings along with their hotel confirmation.

In addition to the seaplane service, Manta Air utilises three brand new ATR 72-600 aircraft to operate domestic flights to Dhaalu Airport, located on the island of Kudahuvadhoo in Dhaalu atoll, and Dharavandhoo Airport, located on the island of Dharavandhoo in Baa atoll, from the Maldives’ main Velana International Airport.

Manta Air’s venture into seaplane operations comes, as a new seaplane base at the main Velana International Airport nears completion.

As part of an ongoing USD 800 million mega project to expand and upgrade the Maldives’ main gateway, construction of a new seaplane terminal kicked off in January 2018. The four-storey terminal, which will be equipped with over 80 docking platforms and other support facilities, is expected to come into operation by the end of the year.

Seaplane is the preferred mode of transport between the main Velana International Airport and dozens of resorts, especially those located in outer atolls.
