Sun Aqua Vilu Reef has been named the best water villa resort in the world for the four consecutive year.

The latest award was presented at the World Travel Awards 2019 Grand Gala, held at Royal Opera House in Omani capital of Muscat on November 28.

World Travel Awards was established in 1993 to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the tourism industry. Today, the World Travel Awards brand is recognised globally as the ultimate hallmark of quality, with winners setting the benchmark to which all others aspire.

Each year, World Travel Awards covers the globe with a series of regional gala ceremonies staged to recognise and celebrate individual and collective success within each key geographical region. World Travel Awards Gala Ceremonies are widely regarded as the best networking opportunities in the travel industry, attended by government and industry leaders, luminaries and international print and broadcast media.

Sun Aqua Vilu Reef has won the ‘World’s Leading Water Villa Resort’ title each year since 2016.

This year, Sun Aqua Vilu Reef was nominated in the ‘Maldives Leading Villa Resort’ category as well.

The resort was earlier recognised with a regional accolade in the ‘Leading Water Villa Resort’ category, at the World Travel Awards Africa & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony, held in June.

Sun Aqua Vilu Reef is a palm fringed paradise-like island located in Dhaalu atoll, a mere 35-minute seaplane flight away from the main Velana International Airport.

Hidden amongst the foliage are 62 shell shaped bungalows with lava-stone pools, whirlpool bathtubs, private sundecks and day swing beds. A further 41 Water Villas complete the accommodation offering with a select few even hiding inviting overwater hammocks.

Guests can be selective at Sun Aqua Vilu Reef and explore the spice and warmth of home style Maldivian cuisine, feast on gourmet organic and free-range produce grown on the resort’s private farm island, sink their teeth into freshly caught, barbecued seafood or dine under the stars with private dining experiences.

A major focus, the Sun Aqua Spa at the Sun Aqua Vilu Reef consists of six private treatment pavilions each with open air flower baths, open showers, a hydrotherapy area and double treatment beds. On offer is also a salon, manicure/pedicure and a beautiful relaxation area.

Encompassing the Five Element Theory — Wood, Fire, Metal, Earth and Water — the spa will offer a lengthy menu of Ayurvedic wellness rituals, pampering beauty therapies and massage techniques from around the world. It also offers a selection of signature therapies to help renew body and mind, including a rich scrub of coconut or coffee, a herbal Udavarthanam detox or a relaxing, fragrant flower bath.

Manta Air and UNICEF Maldives on Monday inaugurated a joint apprenticeship programme to provide exposure for young Maldivians interested in working in the aviation industry.

The first batch of the company-wide Manta Air Apprentice Programme will see six participants, including three women and three men, working as apprentices at Manta Air for the next three months.

At a ceremony held Monday afternoon, the six apprentices were given offer certificates along with uniforms.

The UNICEF and Manta Air apprenticeship programme is a unique opportunity for young people who have a passion for the airline industry to gain first-hand experience and exposure to key areas such as flight and ground operations, aircraft engineering, safety and compliance, commercial and marketing. The young women and men will get the opportunity to be closely supervised by Manta Air staff.

The programme has been designed with close monitoring and mentoring support from both Manta Air and UNICEF. It has been structured to develop and inspire young people to pursue a career in the aviation industry, through a unique and creative learning experience.

“I am pleased to welcome the six new Mantas who will be joining Team Manta for the next three months as apprentices, working together with our team and learning what the aviation industry has set for everyone. We take pride in contributing to the local community and we are privileged and happy to be working with UNICEF to develop young people,” Edward Alsford, COO of Manta Air, was quoted in a statement, as saying.

“I am also delighted to have this milestone when we are celebrating the ICAO Day ICA75 and I extend our sincere gratitude’s and greetings to everyone working in the aviation industry here the Maldives.”

UNICEF Representative to the Maldives Dr Munir Safieldin also highlighted the importance of the apprenticeship programme.

“The partnership of UNICEF and Manta Air we are launching today is about developing the skills of adolescent girls and boys for future employment. Today, the first batch of three adolescent girls and three adolescent boys is starting their three months apprenticeship. The six young trainees have just completed their high school and are ready to start a new phase of their life,” Safieldin said.

“This apprenticeship is designed to expose adolescent Maldivian girls and boys to the civil aviation industry and prepare them for possible professional employment in this new grown sector in the Maldives.”

The programme is part of a partnership between Manta Air and UNICEF Maldives which is aimed at providing early exposure for young people interested in working in the aviation industry and for them to acquire basic knowledge and skills.

The partnership between Manta Air and UNICEF also covers additional areas such as support for advocacy on children and young people’s rights and issues via Manta Air’s in-flight magazine, RAYS.

Both organisations will also join hands in celebrating key events for children and youth, including the World Children’s Day and World Youth Day, to create awareness and engage the public on children’s rights and issues related to the wellbeing of children and young people.

The arrival of Manta Air has been a game changer in the domestic aviation industry, removing the fears of flight uncertainty for passengers flying in the Maldives, and setting new standards in service excellence along the way with pre-published schedules and a tailored approach to provide an amazing experience to all passengers.

The airline currently utilises three brand new ATR 72-600 aircraft to operate domestic flights to Dhaalu Airport, located on the island of Kudahuvadhoo in Dhaalu atoll, Dharavandhoo Airport, located on the island of Dharavandhoo in Baa atoll, and Kooddoo Airport, located on the island of Kooddoo in Gaafu Alif atoll, from the main Velana International Airport.

Etihad Airways launched daily scheduled flights between the capital cities of the United Arab Emirates and the Maldives in November 2011. Since then, the airline has increased the frequency on the Abu Dhabi-Male route to 11 services a week.

Etihad Airways joins a group of major international airlines increasing their capacity and offering premium flying experiences to the popular Indian Ocean holiday destination of the Maldives.

Air France had in 2018 increased capacity on its service to the Maldives by replacing the existing Boeing 777-200ER aircraft with 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.

Italian leisure airline Neos had in 2017 deployed its first 787 Dreamliner jet on its operations to the Maldives, making the island nation the first destination on its network to be served using the revolutionary aircraft.

December to April is considered the peak tourist season, as these months constitute summers in Maldives. Between December and April, the islands boast of dry weather, making it ideal for tourists to travel and enjoy the tropical environment.

Resorts across the archipelago organise special activities for the festive season, which falls during the peak tourist season.

Cheval Blanc Randheli, Velaa Private Island, Soneva Jani named amongst decade’s best new luxury hotels

Three resorts in Maldives have been named amongst the best new luxury hotels of this decade by Luxury Travel Intelligence (LTI).

With 12 highly experienced and passionate researchers across the world, no one is better placed than LTI to determine the best 10 new luxury hotels of the past decade.

This has been an extraordinary 10 years for the global luxury hotel sector, with constant development and huge ‘money is no object’ investment taking place, bringing the luxury traveller a vast choice of superb new properties and admittedly, some disastrous ones.

It’s been a challenging project for the team at LTI, but after thorough consideration, they have determined ‘the perfect 10’. The three Maldivian properties on the list include Cheval Blanc Randheli, Velaa Private Island and Soneva Jani.

Cheval Blanc Randheli

Accessible by a scenic 40-minute seaplane flight from the main Velana International Airport, Cheval Blanc Randheli is one-of-a-kind exclusive property from the luxury fashion group Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy (LVMH). Designed by Jean-Michel Gathy, the creative mind behind some of the world’s most stunning resorts including the Chedi Muscat and many Aman resorts, Randheli marries contemporary aesthetic with the traditional Maldivian craftsmanship.

The multi-award-winning resort offers 46 villas in three different categories to choose from; Island, Water or Garden. They have a variety of contemporary design elements, high doors and ceilings, outdoor areas for relaxation, pool terraces, a 12.5m long private swimming pool and lagoon-side pontoons.

The award-winning Owner’s Villa at Cheval Blanc Randheli sprawls across its one-hectare dedicated island, and is accessible from a private berth and jetty. This four-bedroom villa is the epitome of exclusive privacy with unique facilities including its own spa, oversized 25-metre long outdoor pool, pristine beaches and exotic gardens.

Cheval Blanc Randheli consists of five sumptuous restaurants, and stylish bars, set amidst a backdrop of ivory beaches and crystalline waters. The award-winning Le 1947 fine dining restaurant offers an exceptional nine-course culinary experience, which pays tribute to French cuisine, interpreted with delicacy and creativity in a Maldivian setting.

The property’s Cheval Blanc Spa is located on its own private island, and offers Guerlain treatments.

The family-friendly destination is also home to the Le Carrousel and Le Paddock kids’ and teens’ clubs, providing unfettered access to unforgettable experiences.

Velaa Private Island

Tucked away within the collection of islands that form the northern Noonu atoll, Velaa Private Island is elegantly positioned to overlook enchanting vistas of a cerulean ocean. Its name derived from generations of sea turtles that flock there to nest and hatch; it is comprised of 47 private villas, houses and exclusive residences. The resort also includes a Romantic Pool Residence which can only be reached by boat.

At Velaa Private Island, all details have been considered: each villa comes with a personal butler, all services offered can be tailored to personal specifications. Attention to detail everywhere is also impeccable: stone pavements from the desert in Jordan, Indonesian flowerpots, luxury wood panelling from Borneo, and glimmering Italian marble.

Velaa Private Island offers endless exclusive opportunities. These unique offerings include the Maldives’ first and only snow room, the largest and most extensive wine collection in the region, one of the few Maldivian resorts with a private submarine, an extraordinary kids’ club conceptualised as the world’s ideal kids’ club by the owner’s seven-year-old daughter, and the only resort in Asia with a My Blend by Clarins spa.

Personalising and tailoring the entirety of the island depending on specific requirements, there is no limit to ensure the ultimate experience. Guests can sit back in the knowledge that the island’s highly trained and dedicated butlers will cater to each and every whim. Whether it is watching a spectacular fireworks display within the Maldivian night sky, dancing into the early hours with an Al fresco live music event, stepping aboard the island’s private yacht for a glamorous sunset cruise or enjoying a private, open air cinema night, anything is possible. Other interactive activities perfect for private groups include gourmet cooking classes with one of the resort’s chefs or wine tasting within the Maldives’ largest wine cellar.

For those looking to get involved in some Indian Ocean adventure, Velaa’s high-tech water toys, including the hover board, jetpack and fly board serve as the definitive adrenaline rush. While discovering the wonders beneath the island’s welcoming waters, guests can learn to dive or simply snorkel the coral rainbow.

Soneva Jani

Opened in December 2016, Soneva Jani is Soneva’s newest property and the world-leading luxury hotel group’s second resort in the Maldives.

Soneva Jani is located on the island of Medhufaru within a 5.6 kilometre lagoon in the Noonu atoll, and has uninterrupted ocean views in all directions. The lagoon is 35 minutes by seaplane from Velana International Airport and one hour by speedboat from Soneva Fushi.

Meaning ‘wisdom’ in Sanskrit, Soneva Jani currently comprises 24 overwater villas and one island villa, with additional villas to be built in phase two. Five islands encircle the lagoon, each one with soft white sands and covered in rich tropical vegetation. Four of the five islands will remain untouched, making Soneva Jani the lowest density development in the Maldives. The overwater villas are spaced across the expansive lagoon, offering privacy and extensive views over the Maldives’ turquoise waters. The island villas will be tucked into the lush greenery, providing the ultimate privacy, and all within steps of the beach.

Soneva Jani’s main guest facilities are located at The Gathering, the heart of the overwater villas. This dramatic three story structure is home to the main dining outlets, in addition to the Soneva Spa, library, retail area and wine cellar. It is located next to the Maldives’ first overwater Observatory.

Facilities on the island include the overwater Cinema Paradiso, the Eco Centro Waste-to-Wealth centre, organic gardens, tennis courts, water sports champa and Zuhair’s Beach on a desert island in the lagoon.

In addition to the three hotels in Maldives, LTI’s list features Aman Tokyo in Japan, Corinthia London in the UK, Kokomo Private Island in Fiji, La Réserve Paris Hotel and Spa in France, Six Senses Zil Pasyon in Seychelles, Song Saa in Cambodia, and The Silo Hotel in South African capital Cape Town.

“The team at LTI is totally submerged in every aspect of luxury travel every day, yet even we are continually surprised and occasionally speechless at the level of excellence we find at particular properties. Of course this makes an exercise such as this even more difficult to call, but having visited all of these exceptional properties, some several times, we are confident that of all the great new hotels and resorts we have seen over the past ten years, this is without doubt, the perfect 10,” Michael Crompton, Founder of LTI, was quoted in a statement, as saying.

LTI is a global, members-only organisation, providing digital reporting for affluent travellers who wish to make informed travel decisions, based on honest and highly detailed intelligence. It covers luxury hotels, restaurants, spas and nightlife in granular detail.

Trailblazing luxury resort Amilla Fushi has announced another stellar line up for its renowned annual NYE extravaganza, with award-winning British singer-songwriter, Ella Eyre, confirmed as the headline artist for what has been described as the Maldives’ party of the year.

Amilla’s festive ‘tribe’ will also be treated to an exclusive DJ set by BBC Radio 1 ‘Drivetime’ host Nick Grimshaw and by British model-turned-singer Pixie Geldof, before BRIT and double MOBO award winner, Ella, takes the stage. With rumours rife that a long-awaited follow up to her Gold-selling 2015 debut album ‘Feline’ is set to drop next year, guests will be hoping to be amongst the first to hear Ella’s new material.

Famed for its star-studded festivities, Amilla’s hotly anticipated annual festive shenanigans will this year culminate in an era-spanning New Year’s Eve ‘party of the century’ that will see guests dancing through 100 years in a single night; from the Roaring Twenties all the way through to the dawn of 2020.

Following the coup of last year’s headline performance by Rita Ora, Amilla has once again secured one of the UK’s most energetic and exhilarating live performers to top the NYE bill.

Since her breakthrough 2013 collaboration with Rudimental on the double-platinum No. 1 single, ‘Waiting All Night’, Ella Eyre has racked up a string of top 20 solo singles, won Best Single at the BRIT Awards and bagged Best Newcomer and Best Female Artist accolades at the MOBOs. Ella replaced Beyoncé as the face of Emporio Armani Diamonds and has collaborated on high-profile brand campaigns with the likes of Sure, Bose and ASOS. Ella has confirmed a second solo album is on the horizon and is rumoured to be planning a worldwide tour at the end of 2020.

Ella Eyre

Ahead of Ella’s headline performance, guests can also look forward to another raucous DJ set by Radio 1 presenter Nick Grimshaw — seeing in the New Year at Amilla for the second year running — and a DJ set from Pixie Geldof.

Nick Grimshaw

With music in her blood, the daughter of Irish singer and activist Bob Geldof, who co-wrote ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas Time’, Pixie was the frontwoman of the band Violet, and launched her solo career in 2016 with the release of her debut album, ‘I’m Yours’. Pixie’s album was produced by Tony Hoffer who has previously worked with a stack of artists including The Kooks, The Thrills and Supergrass. High demand for her DJ work has seen Pixie perform sets at a number of exclusive events for Gucci, Calvin Klein, Louis Vuitton, Hakkassan and more.

Pixie Geldof

Open to all guests at no extra charge, Amilla’s ‘Twenty Twenty’ New Year’s Eve extravaganza kicks off at sunset with a revival of the ‘Roaring Twenties’ – think live jazz, clandestine cocktails from an art deco speakeasy and gangsters and flapper girls dancing the Charleston.

As night falls, the boomers take over the beach for an interactive culinary carnival featuring a 50’s Americana-inspired ‘drive-in’; a ‘flower-powered’ hippie hangout serving CBD oil-based starters and desserts as well as an 80’s disco buffet – all brought vividly to life with dazzling entertainment by Area 51 performers.

The party then moves to the marina for the triumvirate of exclusive live performances and a spectacular midnight firework display.

As well as the star-studded New Year’s Eve party, an enchanting array of festive foodie surprises are also in store at Amilla. An incredible journey of flavourful Japanese cuisine awaits at Amilla’s signature overwater restaurant, ‘Feeling Koi’; showcasing a selection of artfully crafted sushi, nigiri and sashimi by the water’s edge, as well as lip-smacking theme nights at the chilled-out foodie hub, ‘Baa-zaar’, and enchanting dining experiences in the magical ‘Mystique Garden’.

Australian football hero and former Everton player Tim Cahill will also be on hand to inspire young footballers with a four-day festive training camp. Kids aged from five-eight years as well as tweens and teens from 9-16 years can perfect their skills on Amilla’s very own full-sized pitch with elite coaching from the Socceroos’ all-time leading goal scorer.

A seven-night festive stay at Amilla starts from USD 10,415++ (approx. GBP 8,594++) per person based on two adults sharing a Lagoon Water Villa with Pool, including daily breakfast, return seaplane transfers and participation in the ‘Twenty Twenty’ NYE extravaganza.

Located just 30 minutes by seaplane from Velana International Airport, Amilla Fushi offers a choice of 59 Houses that sit gracefully over crystal clear waters, nestle among lush tree tops or hug the shores of pristine white sand; plus eight spectacular four- to eight-bedroom Beach Residences ideally suited to large families, groups of friends and VVIPs seeking the ultimate in space and privacy.

Amilla’s innovative restaurants range from the diverse, informal foodie hub Baazaar to the relaxed yet sophisticated overwater dining at the signature Feeling Koi. Guests can even drop in to gourmet café and deli The Emperor General Store or The Wine Shop & Cellar Door to treat themselves to lighter snacks, a favourite bottle or a gourmet selection of artisanal cheeses.

With an unrivalled range of purpose-designed multi-bedroom accommodation options, and an exciting, inspiring and active Kids’ Club The Sultan’s Village, Amilla Fushi is putting the Maldives on the map as a destination not just for couples, but for families and friends
