Hotel Jen has celebrated World Environment Day by organising a clean-up challenge amongst its staff.
On June 22, more than 40 team members joined the clean-up, which was organised in partnership with Parley Maldives, an NGO which is involved in reducing and recycling plastic.
“This cleanup is a part of our larger efforts to support the community and to keep our city beautiful and vibrant, and to show our love for the city where we live, work and welcome guests,” Rhoda Maceda, Director of Human Resources at Hotel Jen, was quoted in a statement, as saying.
A total of four teams was distributed to four different zones of Male city: zone one from Artificial Beach to Villa College, zone two from Villa College to Rasfannu Beach, zone three from Rasfannu Beach to Fish Market, and zone four from Fish Market to Artificial Beach.
The teams kicked off the day’s activity at 9am at Hotel Jen, from where they walked to their respective zones. Armed with gloves, brooms and dustin bags, the teams spent three hours cleaning and collecting different kinds of plastic from the streets. The clean-up challenge concluded with all teams lining up at Hotel Jen with a huge stack of bags filled with plastic. The bags were then weighed — 156.04 kilograms of plastic were collected in total!
The clean-up is the latest initiative by Hotel Jen to protect and preserve the Maldives’ fragile natural environment.
The hotel had in January banned the use of single-use plastic straws, takeaway containers and plastic bags.
The only international business hotel in the Maldives, Hotel Jen Male Maldives by Shangri-La is ideally located in the commercial and administrative district of capital Male, making it the preferred stay for business travellers and transit passengers.
The 14-storey building is the tallest hotel in the capital, and offers 114 rooms, including a Deluxe Suite. The three food and beverage outlets include a grab and go cafe, an all-day dining restaurant, and a rooftop restaurant overlooking an infinity swimming pool.
