Kuramathi Maldives has celebrated World Environment Day and World Oceans Day.

To observe World Environment and World Oceans Day last week, Kuramathi instigated a clean-up of the house reef and the iconic Kuramathi sandbank. Other highlights include a documentary screening of Our Blue Planet and educational activities for kids at Bageecha Kids Club.

“Apart from honouring our environment and oceans, these activities aim to protect two essential resources that provide major sources of food and oxygen to the planet,” the resort said, in a statement.

Kuramathi kicked off World Environment Day by educating kids about the impact of air pollution and what they can do to prevent it. After creating handcrafts, the kids visited the island’s Hydroponic Garden to plant herbs for the Green Wall by recycling empty plastic bottles. In the afternoon, volunteers gathered at the sandbank to pick up trash. Everyone was rewarded with fresh coconuts.

For World Oceans Day, the Rasdhoo Divers team along with some of the resort’s guests collected about five bags of rubbish from the ocean floor. During sunset, the Kids Club Team made sand sculptures about the ocean at the sandbank. The resort capped off World Oceans Day with an episode of One Ocean, Blue Planet at Fung Bar and Laguna Bar.

“Kuramathi Maldives hopes these initiatives can create awareness and bring about change to help preserve the environment and our oceans,” the statement read.

Kuramathi is one of the first resorts to open in the Maldives and is part of Universal Resorts of Universal Enterprises, a 100 per cent Maldivian company and the pioneers of tourism in the Maldives.

An emerald jewel in the turquoise Maldivian waters, Kuramathi is a stunning island retreat with acres of luxuriant vegetation surrounded by spectacular beaches tapering into an endless sandbank. Villas blend contemporary design and nature, and are set on the beach, amongst lush gardens or over water. Four poster beds, open-air bathrooms, rainfall showers or Jacuzzi, large outdoor decks with inviting daybeds or sun loungers, are just some of the creature-comforts enjoyed by guests.

Dining options are diverse with many restaurants, bars and great-value all-inclusive packages, topped off with Maldivian service – welcoming, genuine and friendly.
