LUX* South Ari Atoll has announced plans to host a series of expert-led astronomy workshops for adults and kids.

On July 16 and 17, Sri Lankan astronomer Thilina Heenatigala will host two evenings of stargazing fun and wonder at the resort’s Beach Rouge beach. During these hands-on night observations from 8-10pm, he will help guests view the beautiful rings of Saturn, the craters of the moon, star clusters and nebula.

“These special guided nights of stargazing will take you on a ‘tour of the Universe.’ You will even learn how to use a Star Map to search for star constellations and all the fascinating facts about them,” an announcement by the resort read.

The workshop series will wrap up on July 18 with a children’s astronomy event from 10am to 12pm at the Play Centre, where Thilina will help kids safely observe the sun and learn why it is important in our daily lives. This fun workshop will also include a hands-on activity where kids can help build a small rocket landing module with an Egg (astronaut) inside for a strong drop test.

A Sri Lankan astronomy educator, Thilina works with the Leiden University in the Netherlands and collaborates with the Núcleo Interactivo de Astronomia in Portugal. He is also a Fellow of International Astronomical Union (IAU) Office for Astronomy Outreach (OAO), where he is currently working towards the 100-year anniversary of the IAU in 2019 and its global outreach network.

Thilina aims to use astronomy as a tool for development by providing accessible astronomy education materials, training students and teachers, and developing outreach strategies.

The upcoming astronomy workshops are part of a year-long expert-led series of workshops organised by LUX* South Ari Atoll. The resort has previously hosted photography workshops, writing workshops and art workshops, and is gearing up for an underwater festival in September.

Cutting-edge designer villas and world-class dining can be found only a 30-minute seaplane flight away from the main Velana International Airport, making LUX* South Ari Atoll one of the most exciting resorts in the Maldives.

With 187 private villas dotted at the water’s edge along four kilometres of powder fine beach or perched on stilts above a crystal clear lagoon, these spacious pavilions and villas bring an entirely original vibe of coastal, beach house chic to the Maldives.

Excellent eating and drinking is always a cut above the rest at LUX*, and at LUX* South Ari Atoll, there is authentic South East Asian street food in the Maldives’ only over-the-water gourmet night market and world-class Chinese cuisine at East, along with the Japanese restaurant Umami, which offers live teppanyaki and dazzling selection of sakés.

While the resort has a PADI-certified dive centre, two infinity pools, a floodlit tennis court, a fitness centre and a renowned spa which hosts a wellness concierge and a menu of indulgent treatments, what sets the property apart from its neighbours are surprises, or better known as #ReasonstogoLUX. Designed to create lasting memories for guests, these ‘reasons’ can range from island-roasted coffee in Café LUX* to impromptu movie screenings at cinema paradise and the chance to hang your wishes on the Tree of Wishes.
