Kuredu Resort Maldives has opened a Marine Centre.
The new Marine Centre, established in association with Prodivers and the Olive Ridley Project, allows the resort to provide a better experience for its guests, who already consider seeing the surrounding marine life a big highlight of their stay. It will also help conserve, protect and understand the natural environment that the island is situated in.
The centre serves as the go-to venue for information on turtles and an institution whose findings will feed into the important work of the Olive Ridley Project.
“I joined the Olive Ridley Project Team in November 2017 as a Sea Turtle Biologist and Educator. I will be the projects representative in the Lhaviyani atoll, aiming to combine scientific work with education. I will be studying the sea turtle population of the Lhaviyani atoll and help retrieve and document ghost nets,” Sea Turtle Biologist and Educator Dr Stephanie Köhnk, who heads the new Marine Centre, was quoted in an announcement, as saying.
“Additionally, I will share information about sea turtles in general, the unique turtle population around Kuredu and the problem of ghost nets in our oceans. I am happy to answer your questions and looking forward to seeing you in the Marine Centre, which is located on Kuredu’s ‘main avenue’. If I’m not in the office, I’m in the ocean looking for turtles… What a dream job!”
Kuredu has one of the healthiest populations of green sea turtles in the country, and turtles are seen daily in its lagoon areas as well as on snorkel and dive trips to Kuredu Caves – a renowned site where turtles rest, get cleaned and interact.
In addition to the sleepyheaded sea turtles that call Kuredu home, guests at Kuredu also have the chance to snorkel and dive with amazing fish life, and during the season, manta rays!
Located on a 1,800 metre by 325 metre remote island in the northern atoll of Lhaviyani, Kuredu is accessible by a 35-minute scenic seaplane flight from the main Velana International Airport. This 4.5-star resort has 383 rooms, including beach and water villas, making it the second largest resort in the Maldives.
The island boasts a dive and snorkel centre, a water sports centre, a spa, golf and tennis courses, a kids’ club, and an extensive choice of restaurants and bars. Kuredu guests can also dine in 5.8 Undersea Restaurant at the neighbouring Hurawalhi Maldives resort.
