A team of 10 brave and motivated volunteers from Kuramathi Maldives took to the waters Wednesday afternoon in a snorkel clean-up on kayaks.
The event, organised by the resort’s Eco Centre and Aqua Sports and Fun Centre, focused on the lagoon side of the island.
“This marks the first ever expedition on kayaks and snorkels,” an announcement by Kuramathi read.
Garbage collected include peculiar non-biodegradable waste such as steel beams, plastic bottles, tin cans and bottle caps. A highlight was a nine-foot long metal scaffold lying on the bottom of the sea bed, which was removed with sheer effort along with fun and laughter in the afternoon sun.
The intrepid volunteers later celebrated their hard work with a toast of fresh coconuts on the beach.
“Kudos to the team members of Kuramathi for striving to maintain the island in an immaculate state,” the announcement said.
