Kuramathi Maldives has received the coveted TUI Environmental Champion award for four consecutive years.
In a statement, the resort said it has over the past years made healthy changes to cut back on excess carbon emissions while striving for a plastic free, sustainable island. One of the most recent initiatives was the replacement of plastic straws and cloth coasters with bio-degradable paper versions, which disintegrate fully in a day’s cycle, it added.
“This is a humbling distinction of collective and consistent team work. Corporate social responsibility has become a way of life for us now, rather than an end goal in our company’s goal and objectives. The continuous research helps us find ways to remain neutral. And that this is all possible to our great team on the island, many of whom has been with us for a number of years, and of course our guests, who give us feedback and appreciate our efforts along the way,” General Manager Abdul Latheef was quoted in the statement, as saying.
TUI, one of the largest tour operators globally, is a keen enthusiast for environmentally responsible hotels, and its Environmental Champion Award is limited to a select group of TUI Germany Hotels and Resorts, worldwide, whose performance achieves exemplary sustainable tourism.
To qualify for the award, TUI Germany guests must rate a resort more than eight out of 10 in the environment section. The hotel or resort must also hold a certificate recognised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council such as Travelife.
Kuramathi is one of the first resorts to open in the Maldives and is part of Universal Resorts of Universal Enterprises, a 100 percent Maldivian company and the pioneers of tourism in the Maldives.
