Flight operations will resume in August with major upgrades to its fleet and services, Maldives only private international airline MEGA Maldives Airlines announced Tuesday.

MEGA Maldives suspended all flight operations in May, blaming it on a complex restructuring and recapitalisation process which started late last year. The airline, however, promised to resume flight operations with upgraded facilities and services as soon as the process was complete.

A top official from the company told local media on Tuesday that when flight operations resume in August, the airline will replace its Boeing fleet with newer Airbus aircrafts. Staff uniform and services will also see major improvements, he added.

“In addition to our ongoing restructuring and recapitalisation process, we have been working on acquiring newer aircrafts, and hiring pilots and crew. The whole process takes about three months to complete,” the official said.

According to MEGA, operations will resume with services to its major markets.

China, which has maintained its position as the biggest source market for the Maldives tourism industry despite a sharp drop in arrivals, was MEGA Maldives’ main market. The airline added destinations such as Sri Lankan capital Colombo and Indian capital New Delhi late last year, but later halted those operations.

The latest announcement comes a week after the airline opened vacancies for Airbus A320/A330/A340 Training Captains, Technical Pilots and Senior First Officers.

MEGA Maldives was established in 2010 with the intention of expanding direct air connectivity between Maldives and emerging market destinations. Since its establishment, it has carried over 1.1 million passengers and have flown to over 50 destinations world-wide, but has recently been embroiled in financial trouble especially after a sharp decline in its major market, China.
