Hurawalhi Maldives has marked World Environment Day and has announced a series of activities to mark World Oceans Day.
“Care for the environment lies at the heart of Hurawalhi Maldives, so it is only fitting for us to get involved in this year’s World Environment and World Oceans Day events,” an announcement by the resort read.
For the Environment Day, which is celebrated every year on June 5, Hurawalhi hosted a special excursion for guests from 2.30 pm to 6 pm. The excursion encompassed a presentation by Lisa Bauer, Hurawalhi’s resident marine biologist and Manta Trust researcher, snorkelling on a coral reef and a visit to an uninhabited island where the group collected any debris that ocean currents may have washed upon the beach.
Ocean Watersports invited guests to appreciate the beauty of the ocean during a two-hour three-reef snorkel excursion by speedboat at 10am.
World Environment Day is the United Nations’ most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. Since it began in 1974, it has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries. This year’s theme is, connecting people to nature.
On Oceans Day, which falls on June 8, Lisa along with participating guests will take a Nature Walk around the island from 10 am t0 11.30 am. The walk will start at Coco Bar and take guests on an adventure where they search for juvenile blacktip reef sharks, smell typical Maldivian plants and visit the resort’s greenhouse.
“There is much more to Hurawalhi than a luxury resort – the island is home to a plethora of interesting animal and plant species that will surely impress you,” the announcement read.
After lunch, Coco Bar will host a guest speaker from Naifaru Juvenile, a local NGO based in the nearby island of Naifaru, for a presentation on their charity work and the turtle sanctuary at the Atoll Marine Centre where see sea turtles are nursed and rehabilitated.
In addition, divers will join a free of charge house reef clean-up dive at 3.30 pm.
World Oceans Day celebrates our world’s shared ocean and our personal connection to the sea, as well as raise awareness about the crucial role the ocean plays in our lives and the important ways people can help protect it.
